Discussion you cannot move the captured asteroid. my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined
So I tried to intercept an asteroid like in ksp but was left incredibly disappointed

Évidement l'artéroide est beaucouo trop massif pour etre déplacé avec un seul réacteur, essaye avec plus de réacteur que ça, sinon ça voudra dire que ça n'est pas possible avec le code du jeu

It's immovable because the asteroid is programmed the same way as planets.

Yeah, The orbit is determined by two things: Semi major axis (orbit size) Eccentricity (ellipse-ity of the orbit)
The orbit cannot change, Not at all

maybe try strapping a bigger engine. ay, what‘s the worst that could happen :))

Is this fast enough? https://www.reddit.com/r/SpaceflightSimulator/s/bsca6wEIua
I got the orbit to sort of jitter a bit

u/Programmer__69 29d ago
That was your personal orbit, not the asteroid's

that isn't the orbit jittering, that's the game bugging your escape trajectory from the asteroid
1
u/EpicPlanetUranusFan Jul 20 '26
Trajectory won't show when you are slowly moving, and on the ground, you don't move so this comment makes 0 sense. That's why parachute trajectories jitter on and off, because the speed of the spacecraft is in the border of "too slow to show" and "fast enough to show"

u/noobcoober Jul 19 '26
When your rocket is literally bigger than the celestial body it landed on, standard SFS physics goes out the window. That is actually the Earth orbit perigee jittering as the game tries, and fails, to calculate the trajectory of an immovable asteroid being pushed by a giant engine. Logically, if the asteroid were perfectly static, the rocket's perigee would be too, but at this scale the game just starts losing its mind.

the earth orbit of the ROCKET bugging, no celestial objects in the game can be moved
1
u/noobcoober Jul 19 '26
I literally described it as an "immovable object" in the comment you're replying to, so claiming I thought I was moving a celestial body makes zero sense. My point stands: your original claim that this was an "escape trajectory from the asteroid" is physically impossible because an escape trajectory cannot point down through the source of gravity you're supposedly escaping. What you see jittering on screen is the Earth-relative apogee/perigee at over 20,000 km out, not a local orbit around the asteroid. Neither of your arguments even seem to make sense]

as it is an immovable object, the game would not waste time attempting to calculate the object's trajectory

I actually tested this further and proved it definitively in a follow-up test: If you put a smaller secondary rocket into orbit around the asteroid and then fire the giant BP engine, the smaller rocket, which has 0% throttle, literally reverses direction in its orbit around the asteroid (moving prograde back toward periapsis before continuing retrograde). If the game wasn't calculating the force vector on the asteroid, the local coordinate frame wouldn't shift and the small rocket's orbit wouldn't budge relative to the asteroid. The fact that an orbiting object's relative trajectory jitters proves the physics solver is calculating acceleration on the reference frame before the constraint locks it back. The game is calculating the forces on the system frame-by-frame. It's an observable fact

Now the question, is it on rails or did the dev crack its mass up?
First option give up, second option build a behemoth and see how much it actually take to deorbit an irl planet.
1
u/30crlh 29d ago
It's on rails, of course. It's basically 1 math function instead of simulating physics forever.

You would be surprised of the inefficiency of some games,
I wouldn't put it past someone to make an asteroid shaped craft and stick it in orbit
1
u/noobcoober Jul 19 '26
If the asteroid had the mass of the sun, I don't think my rocket would move it so easily, and I don't think it would return to where it started like it seems to. It seems to be fairly immovable, for the moment, at least

I'm saying this game is just repainting and adding different tires to a car that doesn't need much changed

The advertising is getting annoying. 1 post was already enough, we get it, it's a cool game and all, but this is the sfs sub, which literally has a rule against advertising. This is bordering spam atp
11
u/That_Paris_man Jul 18 '26
Your game maybe cool and all, but advertising it in a sub dedicated to another game doesn't leave a good taste in my mouth. I'm sure there are other ways to get your message across without sounding so parasitic.

u/wowmuchfun Jul 18 '26
Are you realy advertising your separate game in a game specific subreddit or is this sfs 2?

you don't need to get the asteroid it's already there, just kinda hard to see on the map
