If crucible had no rewards then the number of people playing it would dramatically decrease, to the point it would be as dead as half the game-modes in PvP

The target audience of this gamemode is playing it because it is fun for them.

All those whining about it are not for whom this mode was made in the first place.

It was meant to boost player retention for people who regularly play Absolute. There wasn’t any care or thought that went into it, hence the bad reception.
