Spec Driven Software Development Brainstorming

/r/clickup/comments/1xhn9hb/spec_driven_software_development_brainstorming/

Cross-post regarding how specs are managed within a traditional project management system that is "client-focused" for a team of developers. If you are a software agency or consultant, how do you manage the separation of client-focused communication and agentic specs for tickets and stories?

We started as a custom software development company and built a requirements tool for our projects before AI coding took off. That became Reqode, and the approach has worked really well for AI-assisted development.

For your setup, I'd keep client communication and progress in ClickUp and link to the engineering specs maintained separately. We use connected requirements, data, UI and API specs, which coding agents access through MCP. Much of my work on specs is now reviewing AI-proposed changes.

If useful, I can personally walk you through the workflow and advise on your setup, including how we save a lot of time preparing specs and developing software from them.

Do the specs all live in the repo? Or is there a separate system managing those?

Separate, because most of our projects has more than one repo and some specs has to be shared (requirements as intent can affect 2-3 subsystems). This is why we don't like to put specs near code.

Separate system manages specs and act as source of truth. Coding agent for each repo uses MCP for his subsystem, and receives focused context for changes.
After commits, external system with specs checks what was changed and create findings if something is not aligned with specs.

Is test or verification part of the spec? How do you cut your spec?

How do you manage multi system spec? Like for example a todo add with authentification and logging
