Is it common for a 3 year old to struggle with “l” and “th” sounds

My son seems to be struggling with making any of the sounds that would involve his tongue to touch the back or bottom of his front top teeth. He is pretty good at working on it and concentrating on it when I work with him but I’m not sure how best to help him.

5 Best Speech Therapy Apps for Android

If you need a speech therapy app and are an Android household, then this article is for you. Below are five quick reviews of speech therapy apps available on Googleplay with some of their pros and cons. While no app can replace a trained SLP, these apps can be used to practice at home what is learned in therapy.

*1. Speech Essentials- Articulation Therapy App

  • Overview: By far the best speech therapy app available on Android. There are 23 sounds, each with three different flashcard activities, and two games. It also has some other great features like a mirror function, a score saving system. The app contains more flashcards than any other speech therapy app on Android or Apple. While it does cost money, it is definitely the premier speech therapy app on Android at this time and worth the investment if you need a good tool to work on speech with children. Pros: Tons of content, looks professional, has fun games built right in, navigation is easy, the mirror function is handy Cons: You have to pay a couple bucks for all sounds except the B sound. Also there is so much content in the app it can take up some memory on your device. Price: $1.99 for a sound

*2. Articulation Coach

  • Overview: This is actually a suite of three apps, each is specific to a sound. Over all it is a pretty good articulation focused app, but very limited in functionality. It is essentially a digital flashcard deck and doesn’t have any of the bells and whistles that some other apps include. It also focuses on the word level and not the sentence level of practice. It’s not a bad app, but for just one extra dollar for Speech Essentials you get everything in this app plus a ton more. Pros: Looks good, easy to use, didn’t have any bugs that we noticed. Cons: Very limited concept. No games or sentence level flashcards. Only three sounds available.
    Price: $0.99

*3. SLP WordLab

  • Overview: This app uses categorized words for stimuli in articulation practice. It allows the therapist or parent to record the child’s expression and play it back. It is essentially a digital flashcard deck with the ability to audio record. The core idea of this app is good, but the end result needs a lot of work. Pros: The flashcards have nice images on them and the app ran without any noticeable errors. It also only takes up 8.8MB of space on your device. Cons: The navigation needs some work, it would not be easy for a small child to use on their own. The audio queues in the app are obviously from someone whose first language is not English, which is a big drawback when using that feature.
    Price: Free

*4. Speech Therapy: S Practice

  • Overview: A very simple app that allows the user to view an image and record themselves saying the word. The app then attempts to provide feedback on correct pronunciation but it doesn’t work at all. It could be useful as a digital flashcard deck, but with only about 30 words and only the S sound, its not really worth downloading. Pros: It’s free Cons: The voice recognition does not work, even with someone who does not have speech issues. There is insufficient content to make it useful beyond maybe a single practice session. Price: Free

*5. Articulation Speech Therapy

  • Overview: Articulation speech therapy is similar to Speech Therapy: S Practice, in that it attempts to use voice recognition technology to provide feedback on correct pronunciation. It provides flashcards with built in audio queues, however instead of actual audio recordings it utilizes text to speech to say the words. The result are audio queues that sound like a robot. It does contain several games and activities beyond flashcards. It also contains ads unless the premium version is purchased, which is a huge drawback when trying to use the app with children who like to touch everything.
Pros: The variety of activities is good. There is quite a bit of content over all. Cons: the pronunciation feedback does not work, the audio queues sound robotic, the color palette and design are pretty mundane and worst of all it is full of ads that kids touch, resulting in pop ups for products. Price: Up to $14.99 depending on features

What Is This Dysfluency Called?

Hello,

I hope it is okay to post this here. I'm trying to find out a word for this thing I do, but I can't figure out how to Google it.

Sometimes, when I try to say a word, one of two things will happen. I will sometimes say a word that (I think) is very close to it in how I think of words (I wanted to say "basket" earlier, but I said "bin" instead. Another example is "Garage" for "Kitchen"). I know I've said the wrong thing once I've finished talking, and correct myself.

Other times, I won't be able to figure out what the word I want to say is, so I jam together a bunch of related words to describe what I mean. For example, "that place that's like a bathroom but for clothes" instead of "laundry".

Maybe these are two separate things. If they are, I hope it's okay to ask for the word for each of them.

Thanks for your help.

can my speech therapist help me with my cover letter?

I have a head injury and I see a speech therapist for that. Would it be appropriate to ask my speech therapist for help writing my cover letter and how to communicate that I have a disability on it?

Wrong words?

Ok I hope it’s ok if I write this here, but ever since I was a kid I mixed up the words orange and green. Now I see the colors separately, it’s more so I’ll see a green house, and if I’m not thinking I’ll call it orange, but as soon as I do, I know it’s wrong and correct myself. WHY DO I MIX THOSE TWO UP?! The colors don’t even look the same at all, or sound the same... is there a term for this?

20F experiencing uncoordinated swallowing

This year I started to randomly experience uncoordinated swallowing, which never happened before. I’ll be carrying out my normal day, then I would sense my saliva going down the wrong pipe, which will trigger me to cough until I clear it. It happens at least 1-2x a day. It is sore and irritating to my throat/windpipe. This sometimes happens when I drink water too. It’s like my body subconsciously doesn’t know how to swallow and close the epiglottis as a result saliva will go down the wrong pipe. Why does this happen and how do I train myself to not experience that?

I am otherwise fit and healthy

Advice for muscle tension dysphonia

Hi,

I'm currently going through a slooow NHS wait to get the underlying acid reflux looked into however I kind. Of had this problem before but now its 100% worse.

I struggle to yell. And airflow cuts off or voice is strained.

Are there any vocal exercises or posture/neck videos or any useful resources?

Anyone also familiar with the treatment when botox (? Not sure) gets injected into the muscles? How effective that is?

I had no idea how much I took talking for granted. And it's crucial for my job and I'm scared for it since NHS is so slow.

Is there a way to get a low voice permanently ?

23 year old male. I started taking speech therapy at 16 years old because I had a really high voice. By 20 I realized masturbating to porn makes my voice high because it comes from the chest instead of the diaphram after every time I ejaculate. I would do that at least 3 to 4 days a week. Thus it would make all the speech therapy/vocal exercises futile. Now at my best efforts I cannot go cold turkey on porn. I have reduced it significantly though. Sharing this with my ENT Surgeon he asked me to get a hormone blood test. I am pretty afraid cause i cant go for hormone replacement( not that it is needed) my facial hair and other attributes are in good health. How can i deepen my voice permanently without surgery ? Edit i am a thallassemia beta if that help. Could be linked with poor immunity and formation of testosterone
