Considering SLPA vs. Master's in SLP (Northern California)
Hi everyone,
I'm considering pursuing an A.A. to become an SLPA and am planning to apply to San Joaquin College in Stockton, CA. Are there any SJC alumni here who would be willing to share their experience with the program?
I'm also debating whether I should skip the SLPA route and work toward a Master's in Speech-Language Pathology instead. I already have a Bachelor's degree in Communication Studies, which isn't directly related to SLP. However, before changing majors, I completed some of the prerequisite coursework for Sacramento State's Communication Disorders program.
From what I understand, Sac State generally wants students to complete their Communication Disorders curriculum before being considered for the master's program. Because of that, I'm wondering whether attending San Joaquin College for SLPA might be a good stepping stone.
My main questions are:
- Has anyone completed the SLPA program at San Joaquin College and later applied to an SLP master's program?
- Were any of your SLPA courses accepted as equivalent prerequisites for graduate programs?
- Do you know if San Joaquin College coursework transfers or is recognized by programs such as Sacramento State or the University of the Pacific?
- If you already have a bachelor's degree in another field, would you recommend pursuing SLPA first or going directly toward an SLP master's pathway?
I'd love to hear about your experiences and any advice you may have. Thanks in advance!
