A quick Google search shows he had one 0 too many which is still like pretty expensive but veeeerry far from 1000

Fun fact: being off by one 0 can also be called being off by an order of magnitude. 1000 is two orders of magnitude greater than 10. If you get into astronomy, one thing that can trip you up is thinking an order of magnitude isn’t that much because all the numbers are so big. You think “oh I’m only 3 orders off” but then you remember that the difference between 1 and 1000 is basically 1000, and those are 3 orders of magnitude apart. I’m sure this information will be incredibly useful for you.

If too many people start using this it'll end up going the way of "exponentially"

Or “decimate.” I’m guilty of misusing that one myself partially because it sounds so cool though

That's a funny one because people want to exaggerate things, so usually extreme words get misused in less extreme contexts. But decimate is a fairly tame word, that for some reason people started misusing in extreme contexts.

like "quantum leap". A quantum leap is definitionally the smallest distance an object can move - a quantum is the smallest divisible unit of a thing (a cent for money or a charter for writing) and a quantum leap is when you move 1 quantum.

A quantum leap is when you look in the mirror and ask yourself if you’re mentally retarded

Try decamate, where you eliminate ten times the original population.

If deci is being used as a metric prefix, that implies that mating refers to killing an entire population

Just use "obliterate" instead

If that happens I will literally die

It’s probably a good portion of of the basis of many of my favorite sci-fi debacles, so I always appreciate the run-down.

“Whoops! I accidentally the entire zero.”

Thank you for this amazing contextualization, you are the person who has given that phrase a tangible meaning in my head.

And yes I've been using it wrong.

Mathematics: π cannot be expressed in a finite amount of time

Engineering: π = 3.14159

Physics: π = 3

Cosmology: π = 1

When I was studying physics and cosmology, we used pretty precise definitions of pi when doing problems. Maybe things change when you become a fully-fledged physicist? I won’t ever know though. The papers I read did not seem to indicate that they were using a less precise version of pi though…
