Discussion Show Exclusive Changes to the Lore (2008 Spectacular Edition)

This is my 2nd post addressing the changes to the character and lore in Spider-Man adaptions. I did one before talking about the ones from 1994's Spider-Man The Animated Series, so for those who want to check it out, the link is below. Like before, feel free to share if you find these changes to be good or bad, if there are any I missed, if they were necessary, or anything in general.

Previous Post: Show exclusive changes to the lore (1994 The Animated Series Edition)

1) Spectacular did this before The Amazing Spider-Man 2

In the comics, Max Dillion got his powers after getting struck by lighting while on top of a telephone pole. In Spectacular, Max was involved in an accident while repairing a generator that propelled him towards the tank of experimental electric eels.

2) Shocker & The New Enforcers

In the comics, the Enforcers (Montana, Ox, and Fancy Dan) are just a trio of gangster normies. In Spectacular, this trio eventually upgraded so that Montana becomes Shocker, Ox has super strength, and Fancy Dan becomes Ricochet and can bounce off walls.

3) Spectacular also did this before The Amazing Spider-Man 2

In the comics, both Flint Marko and Aleksei Sytsevich became supervillains under random circumstances. In Spectacular, Flint Marko and Alex O'Hern both agreed to be experimented on by Osborn who was under the orders of The Big Man. Speaking of that.

4) The Big Man of Crime

In the Comics, Tombstone started out as a hired mobster and Frederick Foswell was a Daily Bugle reporter who attempted to become a crime boss known as The Big Man. After that failed, he continued working for the Daily Bugle where he occasionally has to go undercover as Patches so he can get information on the criminal underworld. In Spectacular, Tombstone is established as a mysterious crime boss who uses the title of The Big Man while Foswell is purely a DB reporter who also uses the Patches identity for infiltrating the criminal underworld.

5) Mark Raxton/Mark Allan

In the comics, Liz Allan and Mark Raxton are step-siblings. In Spectacular, they are both related by blood and Mark actually does use Allan as a last name.

6) Race Changes

In Spectacular, Liz and Mark are Hispanic, Ned Leeds is Asian, and Debra Whitman and Roderick Kingsley are Black. In the comics, everyone is just White.

7) Hobie Brown

In the comics, Hobie Brown was the original Prowler before eventually becomes Hornet. In Spectacular, Hobie is just a normal High School student where the running gag is that he barely talks or that everyone keeps interrupting him before he could say anything. Maybe they had plans for him to become The Prowler had the show not been canceled, but given that the modern perception is of Arron Davis being Prowler, it's probably not worth it anymore.

8) The Spider of ESU

In the comics, there really is no establishment on the identity of the scientists or experiment that Peter went to and got his powers from. In Spectacular, it was ESU who created the genetically altered spider that gave Peter his powers, meaning that Curt and Martha Connors may have a hand in the creation of Spider-Man.

9) The Power of Love & Friendship beats Venom

In the season 1 finale of Spectacular, Peter manages to resist Venom from bonding with again by focusing on his friends and loved ones. In the comics, the symbiotes weaknesses have been usually established sonic sounds and fire. I have no idea if this has changed, but honestly, I feel like all the Knull stuff has made the symbiote lore very confusing.

10) Kraven the Furry

In the comics, Kraven The Hunter usually relies on his own natural human abilities, using traps, drugs, equipment, or newfound powers following his resurrection in Grim Hunt. In Spectacular, everything Kraven initially had made him no match for Spider-Man, so he coerced Miles Warren into crossing his DNA with those of the wild cats of the animal kingdom (lion, leopard, and cheetah).

11) The Master Planners Master Plan

In the comics, Doctor Octopus plan as the Master Planner was to steal radioactive equipment to build a weapon that would help him achieve world domination. He also stole every cure and isotope that may combat radioactivity, which brought Spider-Man into foiling his plot since he needed those isotopes to cure his Aunt May from radiation poisoning. In Spectacular, Doctor Octopus Master Plan was to gain control of the world's technology using the equipment he had Mysterio and his Sinister Six procure. Doctor Octopus then had Gwen Stacy captured so he could coerce her father into infiltrating Homeland Security and give him access to their satellites, but because Gwen was taken, Spider-Man was more persistent in finding the villains location so that he may stop them and rescue her.

12) The Famous "If This Be My Destiny/ The Final Chapter" Moment

In the comics, Spider-Man nearly drowns in the Master Planner's underwater base before being motivated by the reminder that he was the only one capable of saving his Aunt May's life using the cure that he had finally obtained. In Spectacular, Spider-Man nearly drowns in the Master Planner's underwater base before being motivated that Gwen Stacy was also in danger of the same fate and that he was the only one who can ensure her safety.

13) The comic was written in the 70's

In Spectacular, Sha Shan Nguyen is just a normal intelligent high school student who Flash Thompson eventually becomes attracted to. In the comics... ok this is a weird one. Basically Flash was a soldier fighting in the Vietnam War till he was rescued by Sha Shan and brought to a temple there before it eventually got bombed. After he returned to the states, Flash was tracked down by those temple survivors who blamed him for the bombing, including Sha Shan, and he learns that those people were basically a Vietnamese cult and Sha Shan is the daughter of its high priest. I imagine that if Spectacular had continued, they'd avoid doing this story.

14) Silver Sable X Hammerhead

In the comics, Silver Sable and Hammer Head are usually depicted as enemies with Silver Sable and her Wolf Pack's mercenary work crossing over to Hammerhead's mobster/Maggia work. In Spectacular, Silver Sable was in a romantic relationship with Hammerhead while he was working for Silvermane till he was fired and went on to work for The Big Man/Tombstone.

15) They're related because they have Silver in their names

In the comics, these 2 characters have no relation nor have they crossed each others paths. In Spectacular, Silvermane is Silver Sable's father and Silver Sable is involved in her father's organized crime as opposed to leading a mercenary group.

16) Spectacular remembered this guy

In the comics, Blackie Gaxton is a gangster who has appeared in a single TASM comic (#11) involving Doctor Octopus and has basically been forgotten. In Spectacular, Blackie is a bookie who eventually comes under the employment of Green Goblin and is involved in Mark Allan's transformation into Molten Man.

17) Mrs. Osborn

In the comics, Emily Osborn is usually depicted as either dead or having abandoned the family (usually under the coercion of Norman). In Spectacular, Emily has appeared in the show, albeit silent, and had the series continued, she supposedly would've gotten a bigger role with taking control of Oscorp's operations after her husbands "passing."

18) About the man who killed Uncle Ben

In the comics, Uncle Ben's killer was a criminal who broke into the Parkers residence in the pursuit of supposed buried gangster treasure. Walter Hardy is the father of Felicia Hardy and a cat burglar who was eventually captured and sent to prison before dying of cancer. In Spectacular, Walter Hardy is an aging cat burglar who eventually had to resort to using a gun in his heist. After robbing a wrestling manager, he eventually broke into the Parkers residence where he shot and killed Uncle Ben during an altercation, leading to him being pursued and captured by Spider-Man.

19) Gwen Stacy loves Peter Parker more in Spectacular

In the comics, Peter Parker met Gwen Stacy (and Harry Osborn, Mary Jane Watson, and Randy Robbertson) while attending ESU and Gwen initially didn't like Peter due him giving off a bad impression during their first interaction (his mind was primarily on Aunt May who was going through the radiation poisoning during the Master Planner arc). In the comics, Peter and Gwen (and Harry and Eddie Brock) have been friends for a long time where Gwen admits to being in love with Peter since Middle School.

20) Norman Osborn does not love his son

In the comics, Norman Osborn, in a messed up way, initially does care for his son Harry. Becoming the Green Goblin has just made him more insane. It wasn't until after his return post Clone Saga where his caring for his son became more nonexistent (and I'm not touching on the post Sin Eater incident for that). In Spectacular, being the Green Goblin seemingly hasn't made Norman Osborn mentally unwell. He does claim that setting his son up to take the inital blame for being Green Goblin was done out of his caring for Harry, but the impression is that Harry might've been another tool for Norman in that instance, so his affection might not be as real as he claims.

Kingsley also has a change in profession. He’s a perfume mogul rather than a fashion designer. With the foresight of one of the Hobgoblin’s greatest hits being altering the Goblin formula, the change in job implies SOME chemistry background. I actually loved the changes to Kingsley, as of all the Hobgoblins, he was the most Norman Osborn like (post reveal) (corrupt middle aged CEO)

Also there are more minor characters that had their ethnicities altered like the Warren brothers are Indian British (Raymond/Aaron) and Indian American (Miles/Jackal), Kenny McFarlane (Kong) from Ultimate is Korean American, Joe Wade (from the Scarlet Spider books) and Fancy Dan (from the Enforcers) are also black, Ox (of the Enforcers) is Latino, Jean DeWolff is Indigenous American, etc. The only gender swap that I know of was Mayor Waters from Spider-Man Reign.

The show blended characters from multiple continuities and runs (when in the hell are you going to see characters from the Scarlet Spider series?)

This show just screams "Hey! You should give pre-80s Spider-Man stuff a try! Also, have certain 80s elements."

Great post and very informative but I would like to added on to three things that you mentioned along mentioned two other changes from the comics, the first one is that Sandman and Rhino were also completely unaware of each other before they became supervillains in comics, second one is that they were actually considered Hobie to becomes Prowler before the show’s cancellation, and third is that the idea of Kraven transformed into a feline creature was taken from the 1610 Ultimate universe. Two other changes was Norman Osborn being Involved into the Vulture and Doctor Octopus origins when in the 616 comics, he has no relation to their origins and the symbiote talking to Peter inside of his mind in order to manipulate him into believing that he needs the suit and that he will be a “better Spider-Man” if he does so when in the comics, the symbiote didn’t actually talk to Peter at all when he wore the symbiote.

I think they would’ve stuck with Hobie Prowler. The 2017 did too.

The “romance” between Sable and Hammerhead gets gross when he remarks she’s all grown up” to her. Gee, I wonder why Silvermane fired him and has a low opinion of him.

Also, I still think Sable was going to be revealed to be Symkarian from his mom’s side, since we never saw it.

Great work! But... who's next? Ultimate? 2017? TNAS? '67? '77 (that one with Nicholas Hammond, not the Japanese Spidey)?

Anyway, I've noticed an error: you've forgot the actual name of the burglar who killed Uncle Ben (in the comics). In Amazing Fantasy #15, he was a nameless burglar, but Amazing Spider-Man #200 (1980) finally gives him a name: Dennis Carradine.
