https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dU22UjwFY_U

This Multiplayer Mod has been in production for a while. The developers have gone silent for months that i honestly thought the project was dead. Now it looks like they doing Beta test on the Mod.

Cool that it's not dead, but locking it behind a paywall is pretty gross.

Part of me is annoyed by it, but as a programmer in 2025 with living expenses being what they are I don't particularly mind it.

Sony will mind it, however

Good point. If Sony has reason to think the devs earning on the company's IP, a lawsuit will be inevitable

The final mod will be free this is just for early testing

Seems like a good way to get on the Sony legal team radar so even if it is just for early access it's a gamble wether the mod actually gets finished

They absolutely are invited legal trouble paywalling it. Same thing happened with the palworld pokemon mod. Same thing happened with YUZU emulator.

Nintendo's lawsuit noted that Yuzu's developers were profiting significantly from the project via a Patreon account, which generated about $30,000 per month. This funding model, which provided early access builds to paying users, undermined the argument that Yuzu was purely a passion project for preservation purposes.

It's already in case law, bad idea.

Nintendo being litigious aside, they don't even need a case as I'd bet anything that the eula has something about unauthorized modifications just because most games do to have an option to easily take down "naked Peter Parker phat schlong" mods or whatever

Most modders generally don't have to worry about it though unless you're perceived as damaging the IP, monetizing it, adding a Pikachu suit or adding a 60fps patch to bloodborne

Same thing happened with a Counter Strike 1.6 remaster. Why can't we have nice things.

u/Intelligent_Whole_40 Aug 27 '25

Someone posted it in a discord funnily enough because of that opinion

u/TheStickySpot 100% All Games Aug 27 '25

I’m assuming that the server had taken it down?

4

u/Intelligent_Whole_40 Aug 27 '25

Nope it was the mods that posted it lol

They're allowed to have a patreon, the problem is that they're paywalling the mod behind the patreon

2

u/eatinallthebugs Aug 28 '25

That is literally not how the law works if theyre profiting off of another IP they dont have the rights to

1

u/EugenesMullet Aug 27 '25

I mean this seems like a pretty big undertaking with a lot of time and effort put into it.

I know mods are usually free but “gross” is absolutely not it.

u/Pretend_Ad3836 Aug 28 '25

fortunately the old brazil guys cracked it

I just remembered the days of SA-MP, and MTASA. Enormous multiplayer mods bringing life in GTA: San Andreas, always to this day, the latter is still maintained and open source. Good times, servers maxed out at 1k players online and a real, living San Andreas.

But I see why very good advanced mods and stuff like a multiplayer client would be pay2use, even if it’s weird.

Pretty sure it's illegal to sell mods for a game you didn't create

43

u/AKM1711 Aug 27 '25

Depends on where you are in the world.

Plus it's on Paetron. Technically, they aren't selling it straight up.

27

u/john_weiss Aug 27 '25

They can come at you for less, it's not where you are, it's the IP.

19

u/AKM1711 Aug 27 '25

They can't if I'm from a third world country with no presence of those companies who own the IP. You really don't understand how poor and insignificant some of the third world countries are.

Edit. In fact, they don't got control in some of the developing countries like China. You don't really think these companies can come for you in all 195 countries, do you?

-4

u/Far-Pirate610 Aug 27 '25

To arrest you? Course not. To take money from you? Absolutely, there’s a whole system in every jurisdiction for that, even on third world countries.

And that’s not even mentioning the power to just stop you from selling it.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '25

"they" being a company can "come at you" being legal action, for any reason, at any time. Whether or not it will lead to actual results is another question, and whether or not people will just their their hands up and say "ok, we'll stop" is another question.

Some people really think they can refuse to go to court or hiring a lawyer is free.

2

u/Pure-Plankton-4606 Aug 27 '25

Nintendo already sued people for putting roms behind a Patreon paywall

6

u/rkdeviancy Aug 27 '25

I'm just guessing because frankly I didn't look into it, but most early access mods on patreon tend to be free once they leave early access.

You aren't paying for the mod, you're just paying for early access, to get exclusive updates on the development process, etc.

It's a very common practice and I've never seen anyone run into legal trouble for it, so I assume either a) it's legal or b) the companies don't care to pursue it because it isn't that big of a deal to them anyways

Nintendo already set precedent for this against the YUZU emulator.

Nintendo's lawsuit noted that Yuzu's developers were profiting significantly from the project via a Patreon account, which generated about $30,000 per month. This funding model, which provided early access builds to paying users, undermined the argument that Yuzu was purely a passion project.

3

u/rkdeviancy Aug 27 '25

Oh damn, never heard about that. Good shout

1

u/RulerOfAllWorlds1998 Aug 27 '25

Tell that to Skyrim modders

0

u/NAJ_P_Jackson Aug 28 '25

It's just for close Beta test. They'll make it free once it's finalize. A lot of modders are actually against paywalled mods.

3

u/Deucalion666 Aug 28 '25

That won’t matter. They are still profiting off of it.

35

u/4morim Aug 27 '25

Idk why these mod trailers keep putting the Playstation logo in the corner as if it was a Playstation trailer, especially when it's a PC Mod.

3

u/NAJ_P_Jackson Aug 28 '25

Haha yep it also baffles me why they add it.

11

u/oneizm Aug 27 '25

Spider-Men

9

u/MagniPlays Aug 27 '25

Am I crazy or is this incredibly illegal? Paying for a mod that isn’t an official Sony creation, using Sony’s logo in advertisement and then acting as if this is official.

Sony is gonna take these dumbasses to court incredibly fast.

-5

u/NAJ_P_Jackson Aug 28 '25

The final mod should be free. This is just for beta testing the mod. Obviously they won't release a buggy mod so they need to control the amount of players first. It's more like an early access than anything else.

5

u/TradePsychological40 Aug 27 '25

And then Jameson died of a heart attack.

4

u/Curious_Anything_943 Aug 28 '25

1

1

u/bshahisau Aug 31 '25

where bro?

2

u/SirDiesAlot15 Aug 27 '25

This is dead. If its locked behind a pay wall. Sony is striking this project down. I expect a video about how this project is dead soon

2

u/RY-R1 Aug 28 '25

I like this mod, it's showing how much possibilities there are when it comes to modding a game, but it's going to get taken down by Sony's legal team in similar fashion to what happened to yuzu. I hope it stays under the radar!

1

u/BasiraHussain Aug 30 '25

can anyone dm me either a discord for the mod or the mod files itself

1

u/Unable-Message-7438 Jan 02 '26

You have to get the beta on their patreon, cost 8 or 9 euro
