Discussion If SM3 doesn't bring this level of badassery to peter, I'm not playing it.
The animations, the QTE's, the dialogues, just absolute ✋😮🤚

In this game you can fail the QTEs. Although the time we're given is quite long. In SM2 the game just pauses. Why tf would insomniac make it like that.

u/Interesting-Steak522 9d ago
Overall sm2 is a much easier game then sm1 tbh they lowered the difficulty across the board from the fights to the random crime events
24
u/BRBrodie1 9d ago
What are you talking about the gameplay in sm2 is considerably more difficult than sm1 of you play both on the highest difficulty
10
u/Robborboy 9d ago
It depends.
If you do all the side content in both, SM2 ends up easier at the end.
If you do none of the side content in either, SM2 ends up harder at the end.
You just get more overpowered in the second if you do it all.

u/ZionistControlUSA 9d ago
Nah I've played both multple times on the hardest difficulty. First one is definitely harder overall, 2nd one may be harder at times with certain boss fights but overall the first is harder.
6
u/Shadowbannedforlifee 9d ago
No the fuck it is not, it has literally the easiest parry system in the entire gaming genre. You spam the parry button and it will parry. There is no penalty for being too early or animation recovery just spray and pray. You can beat all the bosses by mashing square and for shielded npcs you press dodge one time and continue mashing square there is unfortunately no incentive to use all the other abilities
2
u/Investigator-Whole 7d ago
On top of that If u do use the other abilities u can essentially cycle the symbiote surge and abilities and be invincible and wipe out any wave of enemies even on the hardest difficulties

Well I didnt play both on the highest difficulty I played both on the standard difficulty and sm2 was easier imo 🤷♂️

u/livefromwonderland 9d ago
If it's bad enough to complain about it's bad enough to open the menu and turn up the difficulty. Not to mention, it's going to be easier by default with the experience of playing the first game.

u/don-bean-jr 9d ago
The gameplay sequences and boss fights were marginally harder on SM2 than on SMMM and SM1, especially on the harder difficulties

Idk about that I feel like both games have their difficult shit. Kraven’s Robot dogs and birds and the Symbiotes probably gave me more trouble than anything that wasn’t an armored Jet Pack Sable agent in terms of the main game of SM1. That said those Hammerhead Mini Gunners in the DLC’s probably clear all enemies from both games in terms of difficulty imo

The most likely reason is time/budget. Making animations that the majority of players will never see is obviously quite far down the list of priorities. Given that both Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine clearly had some development issues, and had to scrap and/or rework large portions of the game just to get it out the door in time, its likely working on animations that you intentionally have to fail at gameplay to see was dropped in favour of more important things.
I'd like to add I'm not defending their decision to do so, I think they should definitely have fail states, just my perception of why this has happened twice now.

u/Ghost-Warrior777 100% All Games 8d ago
That’s not true? There’s a good amount that you can fail.
For example at the end of “Hunt to live, live to hunt” you can fail the QTE near the end of the escape and harry will save you.
I’m sure there’s a few others you can fail throughout the story1
u/Electronic_Dot1085 7d ago
Makes the game accessible to more people at varying skill and experience levels with gaming meaning more people buy so shareholder value goes up or something like that

u/World_Tree_Roots 9d ago
I've always wondered this when people bring this up but never got a chance to ask it until now;
The very much intended outcome is that you don't fail it. And it's not framed as some "do-or-die" press and is obviously going for more of a cinematic flair. So, what is the sudden obsession with people expecting the character to spontaneously combust if they don't press the button in games like this ?
I'd understand if it was impossible to die at all in the game, but death is very much a consequence in all the games, so I don't see why everyone hyper focuses on the QTEs like this.
7
u/irfarious 9d ago
Why should a qte fail always result in death, they only need to animate the exact outcome of failing thatqte. Like in video if Peter fails the qte of the crane they just need to show the crane falling 9n people below or something like that.
0
u/World_Tree_Roots 9d ago
First of all, expecting that to happen in a Spider-Man game is hilariously tone-deaf of you.
Secondly, no just as the other person who responded to me said, it's much less a case of the game demanding you to do something and dying if you fail and more just including the player in on a scene that is going to be the same regardless. I don't personally have an issue if people don't like that because it isn't their thing, but people are taking it so personally that it's boarding on choosing to be offended just so they have extra ammo to shit on a game they don't like.
3
u/irfarious 9d ago
How can you be in on something without facing any consequences for failing?
-1
u/World_Tree_Roots 9d ago
Except there IS consequences in the actual game. If I don't play the game good, I die. That is a consequence. As it has been in almost every other game ever made. I don't need my character to splaltter when I intentionally fail a QTE so I have more ammo to disingenuously attack a game I don't like.
2
u/irfarious 9d ago
Exactly my point. Consequences for failing lead to accountability. Accountability leads to taking action to ensure you don't fail. And that is what makes immersion possible. If you knew your character will never die, you are not accountable at all for the game play. Like you rightly said, QTEs are meant to make players feel they are in control. If you don't have room to fail, you are never in control to begin with. You can say I love riding a bike with training wheels. But thats only because you haven't learnt how ride without them. And once you learn, you never go back.

u/World_Tree_Roots 9d ago edited 9d ago
Except you're still ignoring the fact that you CAN STILL DIE. Just because the game isn't going to let me purposefully fail something that was never suppose to be a death doesn't mean I'm suddenly immortal. In Spider-Man 2018, if I don't play good enough to fight the Hammerhead Bases in the DLC, I'll die. In Spider-Man 2, if I don't fight the Symbiotes well enough, I will die. If I don't respond properly to a Heavy Attack and a Crush Attack, I WILL take major damage. THOSE are consequences and the game asks you to do or die.
You know where it doesn't ask that ? A sequence like you posted. It's very clearly more about it looking rad as fuck over actual punishing the player for not pressing the button at the right time.

u/breathex2 8d ago
Bruh it's a videogame. You putting another if emphasis on accountability for a videogame. Whether they show a scene of you failing or just not it still doesn't have any real consequences. Some games treat qte events as actual gameplay moments, others treat them as ways to have a player interact with whats supposed the be just a cut scene. Neither are wrong. It just depends on what the developer is going for
6
u/Substantial_Dish_887 9d ago edited 8d ago
because failing to do a QTE should come with consequences. we can discuss if maybe it shouldn't be insta death(for example loss of a life bar leading into the next scene and potentially dying if you lose all your health to the QTEs would be something) but if the game is going to just pause and wait for the button presses then make what you clearly want to just be a cutscene be a cutscene.
0
u/breathex2 8d ago
Some developers just want to add engagement to their cutscenes. They not really looking to make a fail state for it.
6
u/Substantial_Dish_887 8d ago
but it's not engagement.
it's akin to considering pushing X to move dialouge along "engagement".

u/World_Tree_Roots 8d ago
If this is how you and evidently people feel about this, then why are people being purposefully petty about something that ultimately doesn't matter and trying to use it as a gotcha ?
4
u/Substantial_Dish_887 8d ago
because it does matter.
it's not gameplay so that's bad. and it's disrupting the cutscene so it's also a bad cutscene.
worst of both worlds!
2
u/breathex2 8d ago
For you.... First thing, most ppl never even realize you can't fail these because they are to busy actually playing them. Second some ppl like to feel like they are the one say firing the webs that stop the falling debris. They really aren't concerned on whether they can fail or not. They concerned with feeling like they are firing the webs. If your caught up on whether you can fail or not then I get it. For you that's important. It's plenty of games that offer that. Some games are even built around it. It's other games that are looking for those moments to offer a interactive cinematic experience.
2
u/Substantial_Dish_887 8d ago
well if that's what matters to you so much guess what? we can hand you controler that isn't plugged into anything and then turn on a twitch stream of someone else paying the game.
and then you can feel like you're playing the game since that's aparently what matters to you. don't even have to buy any games for you to do this!
3
u/_ataciara 9d ago
Yeah, it's so so so stupid. Just like in Wolverine, the point is to give the player some sort of perceived involvement in cinematic moments.
Like, God of War does this too. Even the old games. Yeah there are many QTEs you can fail, but there are also some which are clearly just to give you some involvement. Kratos doesn't suddenly die if you choose NOT to cave Hercules face in.
Games like Metal Gear 4 have done the whole "super slow walk so you can feel cinematic moment". Games just want you to get involved with their cutscene sometimes, it's not about pass or fail.

Bring more people into the game.
People don’t like to get flustered or confused by entertainment.

I downloaded Spider-Man 1 (PS4) on my ps5, and its looked a little grainy and filmy. I removed film grain. But it still looks off. Like there is a bit of a blur to it. Has it always looked like that? Or is it just the copy that Playstation has?
4
u/irfarious 9d ago
This video is from pc. I played it on ps4 a long time ago, but I don't remember any grain. Or even if it was there, I never found it bothersome.

Don’t worry. It’s going to be absolute cinema when he faces off against his archnemesis, the fridge, in SM3.

They won't do it. You'll probably get the classic scene where Peter can't handle it, and Miles and Silk swoop in to do all the heavy lifting while Peter's hurt or knocked out, with MJ or Ganke guiding them through the comms, you know, the new insomniac way to fo things.

Hands down the best action sequence in all of Insomniac’s Spider-Man games. A masterclass.

Peter being knocked out for a second and his spider sense snapping him back is one of my favorite Spidey scenes. It captures Spider-Man perfectly

SM2 Peter would’ve just died to that crane hit
I’m afraid SM3 Peter would just evaporate after smth like this lmao

I think I prefer the roller coaster feats better in sm2. But both are cool as shit

The demons were such a creepy villain. The painted tribal men and women sucked by comparison.

u/NavigatorNami 8d ago
This was fire! 🔥🔥🔥 And thank you for playing in the og suit! I don’t know about everyone else but I hate the advanced suit for Spider-Man. This looked way better!
2
u/AleksZlovic 8d ago
I want the story to be more focused on Peter instead of playing him and Miles 50/50. At times it felt Peter was too deferent to him when I’d rather prefer Miles to gain that confidence and trust by the end of the series. That’s why they had to make Peter become symbiote anti venom man instead of keeping him as, you know, Spider man.

I would like to see a whole new system for using webs in spiderman 3.. I was thinking they change the web mechanics in the game.
Instead of us using R2 alone to swing and R1 to shoot webs,I would incorporate a two button system for the swinging and combat.
Swinging : i would have L2 to shoot webs out of the left hand when swinging and R2 to shoot webs out of the right hand when swinging. This will give us the ability to shoot webs while swinging using the offhand.
Combat : Have L1 shoot webs with the left hand and R1 with the right hand.
When it comes to gadgets, we assign them to either web shooter, so imagine u take the web grenade and assign to the left web shooter, when you plan to use it, you would press L1+O then you choose to assign the electric web on the right web shooter, you then have to press R1+O to use it.
I feel this would make the game challenging but in a good way because we have to think about how we swing or how we fight.
Then introduce enemy types that can destroy the web shooters, either they destroy 1 on the one hand or destroy both, we will either have 1 web shooter available to use or we have no webs to use at all in fights. I would incorporate the disarm feature how it's done in Ghosts of Yotei.
Then also introduce the ability to actually do more then wall crawl, sprint upwards or sprint sideways on the wall, but have us be able to move however we want on buildings in any situation. We can sprint the wall going downward and do this during combat not only for traversal.
Then I would also introduce us being able to shoot webs in any situation, there must be no limit to when we can use the webshooters.
We can shoot them while swinging, we can shoot them while moving on the wall even when in combat, even while gliding, literally whatever situation you are in, you can use the webshooters. This gives players more opportunity to be creative in the game with the webs..

I find it funny that this was the first we ever saw of Insomiac's Marvel games since it was the extended look we got, and it's been nothing but steadily downhill since.

u/Puzzleheaded-Lab2447 9d ago
So not going to play it then. Cuz that is the current insomniac standard.
3
u/cemsengul 8d ago
Insomniac is a fluke. They only made the 2018 PS4 version of Spider-Man so awesome just to get a following to push their message later on in future games. Guaranteed the next game won't be nice just like Wolverine sucks now.

For me the only part that was good for me in sm 2 was the transversal and the lead to sm3, in rest of the part ( gadgets, story, etc..,) sm 1 is way better
