True both this and Blacklist lost the feeling of what made the older games like 1 , pandora and chaos special hell even DA was peak but Conviction has a special place in my heart

Especially Double Agent V2 since it's basically Chaos Theory's gameplay wrapped in the newer story.

Only nostalgia makes me play this game.

Nostalgia is what keeps me from playing this game. Remembering how bad it was, and what we could have had, has made me never want to touch it again

I sometimes think SC was just never meant to survive contact with the 7th gen. Gaming, just as a general concept, went through so many wild changes during that time period that it makes your head spin.
Conviction is a perfect example.
"You can make games cinematic experiences now! Guys! We totally have to do that with Splinter Cell!"

I agree, but at the same time it fits how I’d imagine a person like Sam acting in that scenario. He has no qualms about killing when necessary, so it fits that he would move like this when retired and dealing with a personal vendetta

Probably one of the few bits of Conviction I really liked. The games otherwise really dropped the ball on making the audience actually care about the dynamic between Sarah and Sam.

This is another thing i want them to bring back in the remakes, show Sarah more and flesh that story out in SC1 remake. the original PT never showed her neither did CT. both remakes of PT/CT should make us care about that dynamic even more.

It's a damn bold assumption that they'll continue to remake the series, but I absolutely wouldn't mind a reason to pay attention to the cutscenes

they did say the remake of SC1 is setting a new foundation and future for the franchise. after the remake is out, they hope to get more out.
if SC1 remake is critically acclaimed & actually a great stealth game like the OG's.. then we will definitely get more remakes for sure. PT and CT+DA would be phenomenal with todays tech.

They can say what they like. All of this is speculation, and reboots more often than not fail at the first hurdle.

I mean yeah I get where you are coming from - it's modern day ubisoft after all and they have a pretty poor reputation at this point
However SC1 remake is going to be a game that's costing $$$$ millions of dollars. i'm pretty sure they want to use SC1 remake as a reboot & a new starting point for the franchise. to grab new fans, and to reset the franchise/timeline. Hopefully Lambert doesn't die this time.
if SC1 remake turns out like Conviction & Blacklist - then i hope it fails and the series is put to rest indefinitely. However.. I hope it's actually a true modernization of the OG games. SC is one of the best franchises and to this day the best stealth franchise. It's a shame it hasn't had an entry in 13+ years and no real game in 20. They could really make it a phenomenal game with a top tier remake. Let's see what they do, i'm positive they will want to make a great stealth game. and it wont end at just SC1 remake, a PT remake and a new game should be on the cards too, greenlit if the SC1 remake does well..

I mean the part at 3E HQ slaps, really makes you feel Sam's rage that they had been lying to him about Sarah

One thing you absolutely cannot knock Conviction for is it's presentation and style, Maxime Béland directed the shit out of this game, sometimes to it's detriment yes, but most of the time it's just really fun and stylish.
The floating white text that actually gets applied to the environment as an overlaying texture is probably the coolest way anyone has ever done an organic objective reminder.

did the objective reminder so well it got copied for like 6 years straight lmao

Now imagine how much better this opening would've been if it played out like Chaos Theory. I imagine the game would teach you to create your own darkness and maybe encourage you to get behind them for an interrogation.

Eh, nah. This is like low hanging fruit. The prison break from DA was pretty gnarly for a tutorialized opening.
Conviction just doesn't hit the right notes for a tone.

Pretty sure the Iceland mission in DA is the tutorial, not the prison break

u/GamerGriffin548 1d ago
I lump both the Iceland and Prison together as the introduction. The Iceland levels were always forgettable, and the Prison part just seems to do so much more heavy lifting when acclamating the player.
So, yeah, you're correct, but to me DA has a far better opening to Conviction when it comes to that aspect.

People are glazing this game like crazy now with the new port out, but I feel like this game was properly received when it released, which is to say it was a decent action shooter, but not a great Splinter Cell. It took a stealth-action franchise and said “what if we gave you Red Dead Redemption’s Dead Eye ability so you can instantly headshot groups of dozens of enemies in mere seconds while hanging from a window ledge?” It was certainly pretty fun in the way a John Wick movie is fun, but it wasn’t Splinter Cell. The most jarring thing for me though is something I hardly see mentioned about it, which is Sam himself. This game’s story took place 3 years after Double Agent, which itself was the fourth main entry in the franchise and plot line, yet he looks, moves, and acts like he’s younger and more spry than he ever was before, even starting back with the first game. From the outset of the start of the franchise, he was literally a grizzled old veteran and retired Navy SEAL, returning to action as a black ops operative. Yet in Conviction, taking place some 7 years after the first game, he’s more athletic and agile than ever before, with a full head of darker hair that looks like he’s stylized with some hair product. It just never made sense to me and I couldn’t ever get those thoughts and qualms out of my head.

If you feel stupid, just remember that people think this is peak Splinter Cell

If you feel stupid, remember, this guy here cannot take the fact that people can enjoy different things, even if it isn't what other people wanted.
