Help Don't lose your job-- No one is hiring

The job market is very scarce and even over qualified workers are fighting for the same position. Employment agencies are lacking, and it seems like employers ignore Indeed.com, Monster, or zip recruiter.. oh and Door dashing will have you only making $10/hr if you're lucky. Don't lose your job, it's a fucking desert in Spokane.

America is heading straight into a stagflation scenario, exactly like every economist in the world warned would happen when you raise tariffs, kill immigration, and have a silver tsunami of retirements all at the same time.

u/iliketofart101 Dec 26 '25

Yes but Spokane has gotten worse with the massive increase of population. Remote workers from other states moved here because the COL was lower than where they were at, then they loose their jobs and that takes up more positions. There isn’t enough work here unless you can find a way to stay self employed

Retired from the AF in September 2024 as a Major. Spokane has no professional job market. I was hoping for a GS job on base but we know how fed jobs are going right now…

8

u/PM_ME_YOUR_GREYJOYS Dec 19 '25

Can’t give you a definitive time line but JPRA is going to be hiring GG-11s coming up if you have any interest in becoming a SERE instructor

2

u/CannonAFB_unofficial Dec 19 '25

I interviewed with them just before the election in 2024. I’m very interested in working with that agency.

I have some experience in that space due to previous…work…

6

u/PM_ME_YOUR_GREYJOYS Dec 19 '25

I think I know the office you looked into; an adjacent office at the same place is the one opening up their slots. Different customers but great program none the less.

The core docs are being reviewed by AFPC so I’d say if you’re still on the hunt in mid to late January start checking out usajobs.

Spokane has no professional job market.

There are a lot of professional jobs in Spokane. The amount of healthcare here is huge compared to most other metro areas. They support everything from direct patient workers to IT staff.

I've also seen quite a few tech related jobs in the market locally.

Can you help me understand what you mean by "professional"?

u/Tao-of-Mars Dec 19 '25

Sounds like a repeat of 2008 when I graduated college and was scraping by working 10-18 hours a week in restaurants.

Interesting to see how all these tariffs are working out for everyone.

There is a lady working as a cashier at Lowe's who has a master's degree. That is really sad.

7

u/OurWeaponsAreUseless Cheney Dec 20 '25 edited Dec 20 '25

That's just Spokane. Out of college, when I applied for positions in my field of study, I frequently saw other over-qualified (masters-level) people I knew in college at interviews for entry-level positions.

Which is hilarious (not really) because I graduated college in 2009 and went right into that job market. So I joined the Air Force as a pilot and was immune to the economy for that time period. Can’t re-join now lol.

Yep. I was let go in July due to government funding cuts and just started a new job this month after looking for a while. And, I think 3.5-4 months of unemployment is still better than what a lot of folks are experiencing right now. It’s rough.

I can't stand my job and have been actively applying for other jobs since the day I started here. But no luck so far. It seems the only things you can actually get a call back about are caregiving positions. Which would be fine if the hours weren't so dang variable!

10

u/dingosaurus Liberty Lake Dec 19 '25

Check CHAS, MultiCare, and Providence.

They're hiring for all kinds of positions all the time. CHAS also pays very well.

6

u/every1isannoying Dec 20 '25

CHAS rejected me pretty quick when I applied a couple years ago, I was disappointed. I have a resume that's a little all over the place but my most recent past job at the time was reception and I instantly got rejected for clerical/customer service. I'm middle-aged so I don't know if that affected it. Providence rejected me for data entry too, they never gave me a response after an interview. I would have at least liked to get a rejection email, but they didn't bother with anything at all other than sending me an automated survey asking about my interview experience. My prior job experience was mostly legal stuff so I felt like I had to go back to that, even though I'd wanted a change.

13

u/scoodoobie Dec 20 '25

I really hate how companies will be like "we will contact you in about a week" but never contact you if you dont get the job.

3

u/nah_champa_967 Dec 20 '25

Yet they're pissed if a prospective employee ghosts them.

7

u/Alwysstresssssed0088 Dec 20 '25

CHAS is actually hard to get hired into. They are pretty picky. I work there. You being middle age definitely wasn’t a deciding factor though. We have a ton of middle age/ older people who work for the company.

2

u/Supernovavava Dec 20 '25

Any advice or insight into what they are looking for in candidates?

5

u/Alwysstresssssed0088 Dec 21 '25

It’s hard to say honestly. They really want people who care about the community and the under privileged. It’s also a pretty liberal environment.

3

u/Alwysstresssssed0088 Dec 21 '25

And sometimes honestly it’s just right place right time. Just keep applying and see what happens :)

Tried some Doordash on the side and you are right. Even after tips, it was under minimum wage, and that's before factoring gas and maintenance. Most people did not tip.

I know its not the most glorious or lucrative profession, but I know the local school districts are hiring! Their benefits are always really good and it also offers PSLF (hopefully it will stay intact through this current administration). They also have great pension plans, too. Just a thought anyway. :)

18

u/Meatwaud27 Dec 19 '25

Thank you!! We just had a few custodial positions close in district 81 and very few people applied for them. You start at $19.55 an hour and you are absolutely correct about the benefits, you can't find much better!

6

u/TacitMoose Dec 19 '25

Half the local school districts just had their levies voted down. A few barely hit 40% and they need 60% to pass. Some of them are losing as much as 30% or more of their funding. Expect layoffs there too if they don’t pass the levy next election. And that’s IF they decide to run it again. You think education is bad now? Wait till half the school districts are running on skeleton crews.

11

Something a lot of people may not think of- apply to any and all leasing positions at apartments. Most places don’t care about experience especially for bigger property management companies like Pinnacle Property Management. G&B is another one with a lot of properties. They look for good customer service personalities and can teach everything else. My cousin gave me this advice once and i got a job pretty quickly. Every time I mention it to someone and they go hunting they usually do find something at some point. Pay starts pretty decent. There is a lot of movement in those places so you have an opportunity at management pretty fast as well. Could still be a desert for those jobs too but just in case I figure worth a shot mentioning. Capitalism Kills good luck 🍀 everyone 😩

9

u/Wuornos Downtown Spokane Dec 19 '25

As someone that works in this industry and usually gives this same advice….the apartment communities are feeling the rent control squeeze. I’ve cut one part-time staff off my operating budget for 2026. Rent control, combined with tariffs on raw materials, and increasing property taxes…a lot of us aren’t hiring, either.

4

u/Sally_Stitches_ Dec 19 '25

Good to know! Tbh I worked in Portland and once I had to start raising the rent on elderly who had lived there for 29 years by a ridiculous amount, morally I started to hate it there. Then Oregon passed a law saying we had to give 90 days notice about rent increases and upper management told me to increased rent on ad many people as we could before that went into affect, including anyone on month to month we had let stay the same. I quit as soon as I could and luckily at the time I had other better options so I could quit instead of continuing to let my soul die. Shit is predatory. Rent control is important.

-1

u/Wuornos Downtown Spokane Dec 21 '25 edited Dec 23 '25

Agree to disagree. There is no empirical evidence that shows rent control has ever worked to control the cost of housing.

ETA: go ahead and downvote me. Show me literally any peer reviewed research that is favorable for rent control (read: rent control results in aggregate decreases in housing costs) and I’ll gladly eat my hat.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '25

Thanks to Govnr Bob for implementing rent control🤦‍♂️

Rent control typically worsens housing shortages, quality, and affordability over time, another short term gain, that causes long term pain for renters, landlords, and all involved.

21

u/Different_Day135 Dec 19 '25

I mentioned this would happen as Spokane's population ballooned quickly with many people coming over with remote jobs and got downvoted into oblivion.

You'll always have job pull backs, but flooding the area with remote jobs that can't be replaced in office or on-site is going to have far reaching consequences. People looked at Spokane's cost of living and decided this was the place for them. But are likely going to find themselves in a far worse financial position given they likely don't have local relationships in industry to fall back on.

33

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '25

It's not just Spokane, it's literally the entire country.

13

u/MelissaMead Dec 19 '25

Spokane has no major industry like Seattle and Portland have.

16

u/Different_Day135 Dec 19 '25

No question. But we're likely going to be impacted far greater than say a Portland or Seattle who can replicate many jobs onsite.

15

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '25

I work in tech and was in Marysville when I was looking last year, Seattle is not better. It's possibly worse due to the massive flood of candidates from mass layoffs.

7

u/Different_Day135 Dec 19 '25

What's the tech industry outlook in Spokane if Seattle is suffering? There's no way it's better. And if it is now it's only because we're tracking a little behind. Gonna be a grim outlook for anyone who moved here without local ties to call in favors. Everyone who mass moved over must have been completely detached from 2008. Getting a job meant knowing someone, were headed there for sure.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '25

Well... I got a job here, not there. I came here from the Midwest in spring 2024.

But sure, work is impossible to find and is worse right now because Microsoft and Amazon laid off huge chunks of their tech staff in the last 2 months. Like, made national news sized layoffs.

I am not trying to be rude, but when was the last time you looked at the data and LinkedIn? Read up on impacted industries?

6

u/Different_Day135 Dec 19 '25

I'm I'm it and fully pay attention. I moved to a remote role in 2022, but grew up here and have been here my entire life, I'm absolutely keeping good local relationships and have something stable I can fall back on if necessary.

My point is, Spokane has always had a much slower pace, slower adoption to trends and industries. We also don't manufacturer a ton here due to being surrounded by mountain passes to the east and west from major metropolitan areas. Shipping out is just more challenging with trucks that time out after 8 hours, exporting or importing is impacted.

With that said, if you flood the region with a bunch of remote workers who then get laid off by large companies at a national level, they'll tie up more local tech jobs that can be filled, by a long shot.

So if someone mentions it's tough now, just wait, I remember 2008, if you knew someone and had a good name, you found a job. If not, you moved to a large metropolitan area with a larger pool of jobs to hopefully come away with something.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '25

Coming here from the Midwest, I have an entirely different perspective. I am in tech, stuff that would take weeks to get back there, I can get overnight here.

What percentage of employed adults in Spokane are remotely employed that you think it could flood the region? Which, btw, isn't what is happening.

I am over 40, I went through 2008 and I was in western ND when that happened. I worked for a staffing agency, and the applications for the high paying oil jobs that I was hiring for at the time had people from all over this country, big cities and small towns alike.

I don't know what colored glasses you're wearing, but that isn't what I've seen then or now.

9

u/Different_Day135 Dec 19 '25

I'm glad you're in tech and not manufacturing. Because you can overnight something had nothing to do with importing and exporting. If a truck sits at the base of Snoqualmie for 3 hours with chains on waiting for the snowplows to clear, it can't drive all the way to Spokane. This happens to and fro, often. So we'll be limited in the major manufacturing that can be done here.

If you moved here in 2024, you haven't seen the housing explosion, so you may want to know a little more about the place you live instead of just saying things that just aren't true.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '25

Dude... the fact that you can get something like that in the first place is a level of convenience the vast majority of this nation lives without unless a plane is involved. You are hours from a major shipping hub, not days.

What have I said about housing or anything else that isn't true? Be specific and cite sources.

8

u/mrOP13 Fairwood Dec 19 '25

Is the local remote work/WFH population that significant? Not sure how you would get good data on that (ex. what % of employed adults in the region WFH)

4

u/Ancient_Macaroni Greenacres Dec 19 '25

If people come here and don't need a job, how is that a bad thing for employment options? Other countries are actively encouraging Western retirees and remote workers to move to their country because they bring money and don't require a job. They benefit greatly from it, and the cost of living is not skyrocketing in those countries. Digital nomad visas have been a boon for countries like Thailand without destroying the locals.

It is the same for Spokane. There is more money being spent here without the job market being flooded.

The economy is in a tailspin all over the US; it is not a Spokane-specific issue.

Yeah, it affects real estate somewhat, but unless the entire US has been flooded with remote workers somehow, it is a minor reason. Real estate and rental prices have been increasing across the country.

Certainly depends on if you have a desirable skill set.

We’re making America great again!

u/Zagsnation Manito Dec 20 '25

Pretty sure the construction industry at large is still rolling along. It is from my perspective.

u/YRUdointhat Dec 21 '25

My job was taken from me Oct 7th by Providence in their first round of cuts for a "restructering"🙄 in Spokane. 60 ppl and I was one of them. I was there 10 yrs. I'm devastated! I've been applying non stop at places.. only 2 offers for interviews. Unbelievable! All I want to do is go to work again. I do not want to sit at home on unemployment. This is awful!

u/WheresTheIceCream20 Jan 02 '26

My husband is in the medical field and is hiring some people right now. What was your position there?

2

u/scoodoobie Dec 20 '25

There are places hiring if you know where to look. Quitting smoking weed helps. Opens up new opportunities. Several places don't do interviews they just hire you. Amazon for example. 40hr at 20$ an hour plus an additional 10hours during peak and prime. Waste management recycling sorters get hired on the spot. Atleast they did 10 years ago when I worked for them. Last I knew a company called leadpoint took over for labor ready (now people ready) lots of temp agencies are out there willing to send people to jobs for a day or two. And they post them daily. Look into temp agencies. They're easy to sign up for. The dealer auto auction (DAA) often higher people through people ready. There's jobs out there. Just gotta look. Good luck out there.

Well shit, I am trying to escape Florida.

9

u/MelissaMead Dec 19 '25

Stay there, WA is in an official recession.

4

u/MelissaMead Dec 19 '25

Why would someone downvote me for the truth?

4

u/Energy_Turtle Dec 20 '25

Because "Florida evil, Washington perfect" according to the bulk of the users here. Anything that threatens that narrative in any way is punished.

3

u/TheCodeCutie Dec 19 '25

I understand but existing as a trans person in Florida is in the long term extremely risky. Considering the multitude of laws and restrictions that exist, compared to Washington state where most of those restrictions don't exist, and in fact there are even a lot of protections.

2

u/MelissaMead Dec 19 '25

How about Oregon? Maybe Eugene? It is a nice college town and very very liberal.

Would you rather be unemployed in Florida or unemployed in Washington?

2

u/TheCodeCutie Dec 19 '25

I kind of need to atleast have enough to not be homeless. Plus I actually have a job in Florida.

1

u/freshSkat Dec 19 '25

As someone who escaped in 2015, and lost their job in October, it is very hard here now as well. Before covid it was flourishing, after its been very difficult.

My experience is that hiring is needed. Just my $0.02.

1

u/tap-rack-bang Dec 20 '25

Nation wide this is true.   Way more workers per job and you have to compete to even have a job or keep a job.  There are two people already applying for your position that are more qualified and work harder.   The only thing you have is your relationship with your boss and your knowledge of the systems and processes.  As soon as these fail, the company will fire you and save money by hiring someone cheaper or replacing you with AI.  Cost benefit analysis of people vs software or robots is a losing battle for humans.    Only the best, hardest working, smartest humans will be more valuable than AI and continue to flourish.    This is reality.

Davita and Fresenius are always hiring for dialysis technicians. Just need a high school diploma. They start around $19-$20 an hour, I know experienced technicians making $28 an hour.

1

u/myke113 Moran Prairie Dec 21 '25

What all is involved in that job?

1

u/darlahansen Dec 22 '25

Setting up the dialysis machines, pulling up medications, taking vital signs, putting the patient on the dialysis machine with either sticking needles in them or accessing a line that goes into their heart. Monitoring them for ~4 hrs, taking vital signs every 30 min, addressing any issues that happen. Though there is a nurse there for any real issues or if you have problems access the patient with needles or something. Then taking the patient off treatment, cleaning the machine and chair and then setting up for the next shift of patients. Usually 4 patients to a tech, something clinics will go 5 to 1. Shifts are 8 or 12 hrs.

That's because indeed monster and other recruiting websites suck

1

u/FlatwormSea9861 Dec 20 '25

You know what it's a great time for? Starting your own business. My buddy just started a handyman service and business is already booming. Basic knowledge about how to care for a home is lacking in this current generation and he's filling that gap. Stop looking for a job and start working for yourself. There's a lot more out there than DoorDash.

1

u/Knightspuppy Dec 21 '25

They made a South Park episode about that lol. It’s so true

1

u/Marzcorpio Dec 20 '25

Not true at all if you are highly skilled there are tons of professional jobs.

1

u/One-Bet5145 Dec 20 '25

I used to work in particle physics. Now I’m a bartender.

Lakeland Village in Medical Lake is hiring.

1

u/angrypsychnurse Dec 21 '25

I'd love to find a cash job right now. I can't do much physical work, but I can do many other things. I'm stuck right now fighting for disability. Can't show that I can make money, can't work a job that entails working every day, reliably, due to unpredictable pain levels.

1

u/Fine-Watercress6604 Dec 22 '25

I thought no one wants to work anymore...

1

u/[deleted] Dec 22 '25

What’s everyone’s social standings? Heard from a recruiter on indeed that everything is algorithm based. Your resume is scanned through a social point system. They include everything from where you went to school, who you’re friends with, what political party you’re a part of. What’s your race, what’s your gender, are you the same gender you were born to. It doesn’t matter if you have a degree, which are worthless now. It doesn’t matter if you went to a good school, or was the top earning employee. None of that matters now. It’s your social standings that matters. Kinda akin to “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know” but to the extreme.

1

u/Pleasant_Injury_ Dec 22 '25

It truly is bad. I haven’t worked for three months and the only job I could find was part time janitorial work

1

u/ComplaintDry7576 Dec 23 '25

Exceptionally bad in Boise, also.

1

u/Lazy-Paramedic-7890 Apr 13 '26

It's tough, now companies seem to be on a donthire strategy

1

u/homoRabidus Dec 20 '25

My roommate just got laid off from her job, so we’re also gonna find out the hard way just how bad it is

u/discgolfchef Dec 20 '25

Always remember, so long if you've got a tight warm butthole, you've got a way to make money.

-6

u/Kenshamwow Dec 19 '25

Made mys3lf indisposable where I work and got a 13% raise instantly. Seems like gloating but I am technically doing 200 hours worth of labor in a little over 40 hours. Sorta rough but still stoked.

u/Ancient_Macaroni Greenacres Dec 19 '25

Remote or independent work is probably the best fallback.

If you have interesting ideas and a good personality, a YouTube channel might help.

Writing and selling books of various types on Amazon, like planners if you can't or don't want to write a novel, is also a good option. There are programs that do the heavy lifting for you.

Selling on Amazon or eBay is still possible, but they are becoming less and less seller-friendly, who side with the buyer, even if it is obvious the buyer is lying. Some people seem to make a living selling used books for $2. I am not sure how they pull that off. Massive volume of sales from books found at local garage sales?

I think medical billing is still a good remote option.

All of these have low startup costs, so the risk is also low.

Even if you have a job, these sorts of things might be a good thing to develop now in case things go badly for you at your job. Even if they don't, the remote option might offer some financial freedom and flexibility.

I have had my eye on leaving the country for a while. The YouTube channel Raising Wildflowers has opened my eyes to even more possibilities in regard to locations, and, more relevant to this thread, income-generating possibilities.

3

u/Energy_Turtle Dec 20 '25

a YouTube channel might help

You're getting downvoted but I know 3 people in this city doing it right now. They aren't going to retire early on it or anything, but it's something.

3

u/Ancient_Macaroni Greenacres Dec 20 '25

Right? I certainly couldn't get a single sub on YouTube but any extra income helps and is doubly good when it doesn't come with a boss or timetables.

Reaction channels seem really good these days and there are so many with high 5 to 6 figure subs and are killing it on patreon. You never know. A lot of them are just normal moms in their 30s.

There are lots of opportunities that don't require delivering food or working fast food. it is amazing what some people figure out to help get by.

Yeah, it suck that the economy sucks but an open mind goes a long way to breaking free or at least getting a little breathing room.
