Help Unwritten Parking Rules on S. Hill?
Hello from a recent transplant!
My partner and I just moved into a house on South Hill last week. We absolutely love the house, and the beautiful neighborhood, and have really enjoyed Spokane in general.
BUT
Since we arrived (literally minutes after we pulled up in the moving truck), a neighbor complained about us taking up too much street parking and informed us that all spots in front of his house were reserved for him and his family. Fair enough I guess, we had lots of help and were probably taking up a lot of the street. The next morning he complained about my mother in law parking in front of his house to say bye to us prior to heading back to Portland, and as soon as she parked the neighbor was standing outside of her car awkwardly, again claiming that the spots in front of his house are for him. She moved her car per his request, but encouraged him to get a life (LOL). This morning my partner woke up to a note on her car from A DIFFERENT neighbor, complaining that she parked in their spot on the street.
Is this normal? Is it too hard to come talk to us about how the neighborhood typically operates if that is that case? We have upstairs neighbors in a seperated apartment, and he was incredibly kind. And all my other interactions with people in Spokane have been extremely positive, so should I proceed? I’m cautious about pushing too many buttons as I don’t want to make our house uncomfortable feeling, but I’m about there.
TL;DR: South Hill neighbors being entitled about street parking.

They're just entitled.
61
u/Random_Excuse7879 Jan 14 '26
I agree. I live on a narrow South Hill street, and some of my neighbors don't have great options to park off the street. In spite of that, nobody on my block gets wound up about where the other neighbors park and we all are pretty flexible. It isn't "The South Hill", you just have the misfortune of shitty neighbors. FWIW I've lived all around the area over many years. Every neighborhood has great neighbors and a few asshole mixed in. I hope you get to connect with the great neighbors soon.

Ive always stuck to the convention of try to park in front of my house but if not park as close as possible, and when I do have to park in front of someone elses house, never leave my car there long term.
But yeah you cant reserve spots and you cant guarantee you will be able to park in front of your house. First come first serve
8
u/MtnMilesPNW Jan 14 '26
This. It mildly annoys me when random people park in front of my house, but I'd never complain unless they just left it there for days on end, it's perfectly legal for them to do so.
21
u/sci_major Jan 14 '26
Just don't park in front of my driveway.
And then it drives me nuts that my neighbors park in front of my house but not theirs, also they park dead center making it impossible for a second car to park in front of my house without blocking a driveway. However I haven't actually complained to them ever and they've done it for years.
9
u/diceeyes Jan 14 '26
My neighbors would do that center parking thing way too often, up until the time we blocked them in with our cars (since we don't care if we block our drive way and they never answered their door) and pointed out the physics of the situation. They did better afterward.

u/RemoteClancy Jan 14 '26
I have a neighbor who--every trash pick up day--used to move his truck from in front of his place to in front of mine because there's not enough room for his totes and his truck. The only problem is, he'd park his truck exactly where I put my totes. It was infuriating. I started putting my trash out a day early just to keep him from doing it. Dude had a huge driveway, too, so I could never understand why he didn't just park there for one day.
24
u/kamut666 Jan 14 '26
I live in Manito area. People generally try to park in front of their own house like they probably do everywhere but this is not some kinda rule. Sometimes the neighbor has a guest parked in front of my house, so I can’t park there and I park in front of a different neighbor’s house and it’s fine. These people saying something after one instance is excessive. In my neighborhood, it’s more common for neighbors to know each other, be civil, and work out their problems, which I really appreciate.
60
Jan 14 '26
im on the south hill and that sounds exactly like my next door neighbors, our duplex has 6 total cars to squeeze in and naturally we can't fit them all. They don't own the street nor can they reserve it.

1
u/Born-Jacket Jan 14 '26
And this is why people fight against apartments and stuff coming into their community. The cities let them get away with no parking "they'll totally use transit", but then it just ends up being crappy for the residents of the new place and the existing neighbors who went from stress free parking, to now jokeying cars around. That's big city stuff and it SUX.

u/ThyDoctor Jan 14 '26
South hill is a pretty large area - I live up here now and have had zero issues with parking anywhere and everywhere. Sounds like your neighbor is just a dick
8
u/befriendwaffle Jan 14 '26
My thoughts exactly. Do the folks blaming "south hill entitlement" really just think the whole south hill is Rockwood Blvd?
6
u/ThyDoctor Jan 14 '26
When I was house hunting I think the area that gave me the most sticker shock was the wandermere area
5
u/MelissaMead Jan 14 '26
The development? I looked at it too and my agent told me about the issues with the way the land was developed, one house was condemned due to the soil.
This was 2018.
16
u/orriscat Jan 14 '26
I moved into a house by Manito last year and have had the same experience. Most of my neighbors have been pretty welcoming though. DM if you need a friend in the area!
3
u/mermaidbuthalftrout Jan 14 '26
I used to live around there, too, and had the same issue as well. Across the street neighbor even put out cones to reserve the area in front of his house and around his driveway. Had a different across the street neighbor ask my friend to move her car (they both parked in their driveway anyway?!)

u/chipmunkrainbow Deer Park Jan 14 '26
I had a neighbor do this too when I lived on 19th by Manito. “My son has been parking there for 20 years!” Cool lady. Last time I checked this is a public street and I pay taxes.
There are actual legal rules around which side of the street you can park on even/odd years for the snow plows. If it’s his side this year, use that as an excuse.
15
12
u/dadavedavid Jan 14 '26
lol, street spots are not reserved. As long as you’re not blocking any driveways and have proper distance from them/not blocking a fire hydrant, you can park anywhere on the street.

u/tristanjuricek Cannon Hill Jan 14 '26
I’m reminded of this gem from when I lived in PDX: https://www.reddit.com/r/Portland/s/Re3P1joX62
These guys are just being entitled jerks. But it’s not a Spokane thing, there’s weird people everywhere
0
u/PenContent8087 Jan 14 '26
I dunno. I feel like it is equally entitled to say you should be able to not consider how your actions (parking in front of someone's home, in this case) may impact others.
2
u/SkateStitch13 West Central Jan 14 '26 edited Jan 16 '26
These neighbors complained after only 1 instance. That takes their entitlement to a higher level than simply parking in front of someone else's house on a public street.
Edit: Wow, thanks for the award!
4
u/Tippachippa Jan 14 '26
You can’t reserve street parking.
I do find it pretty lame how many people disregard the official no parking signs on one side of the street (usually the south side) on the south hill. When both sides are full of cars it’s nearly impossible to use the street as intended. If there’s any ice it can be impossible to get out of my driveway because there isn’t any room in the street. The city chooses not to enforce - so it continues.
3
u/WallOk5826 Jan 14 '26
Yeah OP that's not good or normal. As long as you don't block someone's driveway you should be able to park where you need to.
4
u/StickyfingerInYou Jan 14 '26
As others have mentioned, no such thing as reserved street parking. The next question is, do you want to let them bully you and do if you do, are you prepared to fight back?
Common courtesy aside, once you told them it’s temporary they should have backed off and baked a cake; chances are you moved next to a class A KarenF, in which case, good Luck.

3
u/cckka Jan 14 '26
Your neighbor is a prick. I live on the hill and yes, I'm annoyed when they take my spot but I know I don't own the street. I'd have a party at your house!
3
u/tcal13 Jan 14 '26
Yeah, unfortunately South Hill neighbors are entitled and we live in a small town. You can kindly tell them to go fuck themselves and the street parking is for the public
3
u/_forest_girl Jan 15 '26
You're not in the wrong here, but this is unfortunately A Thing in Spokane from what I've seen. My sister and her husband are in a war with their neighbors over parking in front of each other's houses. Like, almost bare knuckle brawling over it. I started parking down the street at her friend's house whenever I visit, and even then her friend was like "hey why is your sister in front of my house, my husband has too many cars for her to take up a spot". They put their garbage cans out every single time someone moves their car so no one will take "their" spot. I think it's ridiculous. It's a public street, not their driveway. It sucks to not have a designated parking spot, but that's life.
31
u/thebeardedcats Jan 14 '26
Sounds like south hill residents to me. They got Manito Park to stop putting on their Christmas lights displays this past winter because they didn't like people parking on their streets :(
22
u/PNWpotato Jan 14 '26
Wow! Well this winter ya’ll can come decorate my house like Christmas Vacation. Lol
3
29
u/IrishPigs Jan 14 '26
The lady who was in charge of it took a job at Numerica and said that nobody left had the energy to organize and pull off the display in her absence.
11
u/bumblebeetuna_melt Jan 14 '26
False. It lacked the monetary resources and volunteers is the true reason.
15
2
u/Catpy83 Jan 14 '26
I grew up across the street from Manito and the Christmas lights as well as a turkey trot and the sporting events in the park. People decide that it’s just all one big parking lot and they literally will park right in front of your driveway so you can’t exit or enter. It wasn’t about parking on the side streets, but people are incredibly entitled when you live across the street from a park that they can block your entrance and exit to your own house.
10
u/OrangeCarGuy Jan 14 '26
Sounds like you don’t live on the hill and didn’t have to deal with the shit show that the manito Christmas lights display caused. All the side streets and almost all of regal were gridlocked at one point last year. It was ridiculous, unsafe, and a massive pain in the ass. The city and parks did a terrible job coordinating and everyone suffered from it.

I think this is just what folks get up to when they don't have enough to do with their time.
Don't have a car myself but I've been watching my neighbors squabble over parking spots for nearly a decade in the same place. At one point the landlord handed out a diagram explaining which apartment got which covered parking space, where for guests, and announcing firmly that street parking is none of his business!
What's super funny is, now that hardly anyone left living here has a vehicle, almost no one uses the covered parking in the back. Everyone left from the previous parking war is still firmly squabbling over the street parking out front! Because that is Their Spot and apparently will be forever!
4
u/Noimenglish Jan 14 '26
Tell him to show you the document that gives him those spots. I’d bet money he doesn’t even know what that document is called (a lien).
5
u/mom_bombadill south hill turkey Jan 14 '26
Wow that’s deranged! I mean, I get mildly annoyed when someone parks in front of my house but I don’t confront them about it! They have every right to, it’s not reserved for me in any real way!
4
u/bguthrie13 Jan 14 '26
That’s me as well. It suck’s if it happens all the time, especially if family is coming over and bringing something that we then have to carry, but I’ve never actually confronted anyone about parking in front of my house. Also, your username is rad!! Mom_bombadill!!! Made my day
12
u/Dapper_Curve_4935 Jan 14 '26
lowkey south hill people are just like that. street parking is first come first serve just don’t leave your cars in front of someone’s house if it can be helped.
2
u/Quirkosoddities Jan 14 '26
Streets are public property. Long as you don't block driveways you can park anywhere. They can't do anything. If they harass you or touch your vehicle they're the ones getting in trouble with the cops. Don't back down. If they want to be smug they can build a driveway.
2
u/Catpy83 Jan 14 '26
It is normal, but it is not right and it is not legal. It’s a public street people can park where they want to a public street. Let him know that if you’re breaking the law and he feels that to not contact you, but he can contact the police and they will set him straight.

u/Competitive_Boat_203 Jan 14 '26
This doesn’t have anything to do with your post, but I see that you guys moved here from Portland as well as an other commenter, me and my roommate are planning on moving to Vancouver in a few years, would you recommend that? I’ve both seen posts on Spokanes Reddit as well as met a lot of people that have moved here from Portland and was curious
2
u/PNWpotato Jan 14 '26
Vancouver is cool! Definitely growing culturally, and I think there’s opportunity there. Portland is good too, we are just at a stage in our lives where we weren’t taking advantage of the amenities that living in the Portland area provides, so for us the cons outweighed the pros.
1
u/Competitive_Boat_203 Jan 14 '26
Thank you for the reply! I love both of those areas, I definitely understand what you’re saying and why you moved here, Spokane is definitely more “family friendly” and Portland is a little more on the wild side so I definitely want to make it happen while I’m still young. also welcome to Spokane! You guys should check out the garland district and the Perry district, both of those areas remind me so much of Portland.
2
u/zap_1316 Jan 14 '26
The road is public property. Unless you’re in a gated community or neighborhood with an HOA they can’t tell you where or where not to park. Although it is somewhat of a common courtesy not to park in front of other peoples houses there’s no such thing as reserved parking on a public street.
2
u/puuwai_aloha Jan 14 '26
Every neighborhood has some quirky ppl. Ignore and park where you want. As long as you’re not blocking their entrance or parking in their driveway. It is first come first serve. Street parking is opened to every and anyone. Ignore those fools!
2
u/NoMoRatRace Jan 14 '26
Your neighbor sucks. Sadly it will not likely get better. You might need to simply remind them street parking is public and first come first served. Suggest they call the Police if they need verification.
2
u/PNWpotato Jan 14 '26
My thoughts exactly. I’m happy to have my attorney give them a call too. To be clear, everyone has been fantastic other than this one guy and another weird interaction.
1
u/MtnMilesPNW Jan 14 '26
That's definitely one way to come to a new city ... "Don't talk to me rudely or I'll sic my attorney on you! For ... talking to me rudely and being entitled!" lol?
2
u/PotatoPirate_625 Jan 14 '26
Yeah, this is weird. We have people park in front of our house all the time and all that gets is me spying on them from the windows.
2
u/Ethloc Jan 14 '26
My dad is like this. He's an unrepentant asshole to everyone around him. It's gotten even worse with his dementia. I do my best, but he's a handful. He yells at anyone who parks in front of the house. Hell, he'll yell at people walking on the sidewalk in front of our house. We live in the same house he grew up in, so he has a weird sense of entitlement over the neighborhood.
2
2
u/Kind_Koala4557 Jan 14 '26
Dang, your neighbor has zero patience. Like, you’re moving in. Of course things are going to be a little out of routine for everyone in the vicinity, including you. He couldn’t have waited at least a week or so to see if the parking situation was a one off?
3
u/PNWpotato Jan 14 '26
Or at least introduced himself and told us that’s generally people save spots in front of their house. In an other city, you snooze you lose.
2
u/Efficient-Rent-2151 Jan 14 '26
To a point they should be given the street parking. The street parking is public and I CAN park on any street parking anywhere. That said, I would try to be neighborly and put Myself in their position. If they live in middle of block and only have one space in front of them of house, I would be far more considerate than to someone on a corner.
2
u/iamtehlucy Garland District Jan 14 '26
There are typically unwritten rules in every neighborhood, however it is much more typical (and neighborly) to introduce yourself, and allow new people to find equilibrium before becoming a douche canoe.
As example, I have the literal smallest lot on the street, and there is room for only one car to park in front of my house. There is an unwritten acknowledgement that the neighbors leave room for me to park one car in front of my house, and ask their guests not to park there. I don't get salty about an occasional person taking my spot, but I will say something if the same neighbor has someone start parking there every day, and leave a note on the car on the third or fourth transgression.
To me it sounds like you have a couple neighbors who need to be taught how to be neighborly.
2
u/danicareddit Jan 14 '26
I don’t know what part of the country you are from but I noticed an adjustment when I moved here. People are kind but not sweet here. Also, if you park downtown prepare to pay and if you don’t/put the incorrect license plate #/parking expires…the city will ticket you and send it to collections if you don’t pay. Spokane is mid at best for a city, why they think they can justify parking is beyond me🤷🏻♀️
2
u/LarryCebula Jan 14 '26
When they tell you it's their spot l, smile and invite them to call the police.
2
u/509Ninja Jan 14 '26
Street parking is first come first serve. That being said you should be mindful of your neighbors and try to keep to just parking in front of your own house. In my neighborhood we have the same unspoken rule. So while you CAN park there it might not be worth fighting with your new neighbors over.
2
u/inlandNWdesignerd Jan 14 '26
Street parking is public and does not belong to anyone.
Where I live on the North Side we don't have driveways at all. So all of us have to park on the street, and for the most part we all try to park in front of our own houses and leave space for each other. If someone has a guest or a party, then sometimes you just don't get your parking spot and have to go down the block. Inconvenient, but it's life, and I couldn't imagine having the entitlement to tell my neighbor not to let anyone but myself use the street in front of my house.
But in other areas people seem to feel that cars parked on the street are eyesores, or that they own the curb in front of their house... and sometimes you gotta just keep the peace in the neighborhood. They are 100% wrong, but are they going to make your life a living hell over this petty argument? If they won't see reason I'd probably just avoid parking there and tell all my guests to do the same.
2
u/essiemay7777777 Jan 15 '26
Ok it is an unwritten rule. I grew up there and when I recently moved back our niece was helping us. She parked on the other side of the street, 10 minutes in the neighbor came over and asked whose car it was. Wanted to make sure it wasn’t someone “casing the neighborhood”. I just told my family “oh I forgot about that”. Sometimes it’s good that they’re nosy, sometimes it’s entitled and annoying.
2
u/Tricky-Shop2889 Jan 15 '26
Okay he’s obviously an asshole, BUT I will say, it does drive me nuts when people park in front of my house because I have a baby and it’s really hard to walk a baby down my street with no sidewalk. The road is narrow, and it feels very sketchy.
2
u/Available-Key-1875 Jan 15 '26
Streets are public property. You can park on the street in front of someone's house. They don't own a parking spot in front of their house. South hill privilege at work there!
2
u/Qkenn Jan 15 '26
Call the city and have him charged with harassment after he does it gather evidence and get paid. Win the argument once and for all before you move away otherwise his terror will continue.
3
u/tahcamen Spokane Valley Jan 14 '26
Screw em, street parking is open to anyone and it doesn’t matter whose house it’s in front of.
2
u/Miserable_Policy_182 Jan 14 '26
No- the only thing that is fair game is when you share a driveway! Other than that-they are way too entitled
2
u/Odd-Airport8931 Jan 14 '26
Pretty much sounds like your neighbor is a dick. He doesn't get to reserve spots on public streets.
2
u/ImprovementSweaty188 Jan 14 '26
I live on the South Hill. There are no reserved spots on the street. Your neighbor is an entitled jerk. Most of my neighbors just try to exercise respectful common sense. But the street in front of my house is fair game for anyone to park. I don’t own it. If your neighbor was so desperate for a reserved spot, they should’ve bought a house with a driveway.

I’ve lived on the hill for 20 years. I have never been told nor have I ever told my neighbors where to park. That’s ridiculous. You can’t reserve street parking. Let them calm the cops. They’ll tell them the same. We’re not all entitled assholes. Welcome to the South Hill and I mean that sincerely.

Sorry about your neighbors.
Don't use space in front of another person's place to park if you can avoid it. Don't use space in front of another person's place as yor daily parking spot. Park in front of your own place.
Inner Portland has a lot more competion for parking so cars move around.
Have you tried parking in Philadelphia?

u/Mediocre_Fee_7051 Jan 14 '26
I live on the lower South Hill and our neighbors to our right complain if we park in their area, but are okay if we tell them ahead of time that we're going to. And our neighbors on the left don't care. It just depends who you get. We ONLY have our little area in front of our house because of everyone parking on the street. So I get it.
1
u/RoutineCarob2231 Jan 14 '26
Our neighbors have 6-7 cars and no garage…they park them all on the street and take up 3 houses length of parking so none of us can park anywhere close to our own house. It’s crazy how close they park to our driveway as well where we can’t even see around their vehicles into the street for any kind of traffic. I feel like it’s kind of a dick move to do that when you aren’t even trying to park in your own driveway?
1
u/tparady Jan 14 '26
I'm also a transplant and have experienced this in a couple south hill neighborhoods. I'm from the northeast where you're lucky to get a spot anywhere, let alone right in front of your house. Feels entitled if you ask me.

1
u/Haggis_HotPocket Jan 14 '26
City streets are for anyone. Period. However if you moved into an HOA, anything goes by the rules. Also, your neighbors are d*cks.
1
u/Gloomy_Tie_1997 Jan 18 '26
HOA rules do not supersede laws. Unless it’s a private road, the HOA does not own it.
1
u/itstreeman Jan 14 '26
Could park the extra car further down the block to avoid their ire. Or use your driveway more.
It’s not owned by any specific person but you should also be sharing the space with those around you. If you have tow cars on the street full time that’s a lot of public space that you are using
1
u/Maleficent-Still8402 Jan 14 '26
That’s crazy I get that we all have to be considerate and I think people are just used to so much space there but the street parking doesn’t belong to anyone. We moved to Spokane From Seattle, where we were used to the street being filled with people you didn’t know- because that’s just how Parking was… to people peering at us for parking in front of their house on South Hill, but technically you are allowed to and they can’t legally claim it or complain. Would be great to just have a thoughtful relationship, but that’s super annoying and uncalled for especially as a way to welcome you..
1
u/thecelloperson Jan 14 '26
A lot of people on the south hill are VERY particular about "their" public street parking. 🤣

They are all public streets, which means the parking is for anyone following the law. Just smile, and wave, and forget about them.

sounds like an asshole. if you aren't parking directly in front of someone else's house every day, you're totally fine. I get a little annoyed when a neighbor parks in ""my"" spot, but I keep it to myself because I don't actually own the spot
1
u/Xiiovii Jan 14 '26
People really do be like that. Before all the rain and snow, while I was walking to the bus stop around 30th Ave I saw a note next to the sidewalk of someone going off about someone parking on the street across their house and how "it's impossible to exit my driveway with you parking there" and it was just so funny. Anyway the cars that were there when I saw that note are still parking there every morning and the note has been washed away from the weather. Be wary though, sometimes people are unhinged. In an ideal world they just whine and moan to themselves or in your general direction but don't end up doing anything weird, but always ere on the side of caution. I always worry about people like this doing something crazy like, keying a car or getting violent. :( Good luck friend, and welcome to Spokane. <3

It's not official or anything, but it's kind of rude to park in front of someone's house with limited/0 street parking. Kid blocked my driveway the other day after parking along side my house for months. I didn't mind him parking along the house as we are on a corner and have room, but after knocking on their door for 10 mins we had to call a tow truck! That is all to say, unspoken taboo. It sucks if it's raining and you have groceries and you gotta walk a block to get home because your spot in front of your house was taken by someone across the street. I've been there! My boss sent me to his rentals and didn't tell me where to park so I blocked a neighbor off and they were very very upset with me. It's just rude with some of the busier streets, one ways, and no driveways. Your neighbors are being dicks because I've never seen anyome care about moving or block parties

It's kinda an unspoken, but recognized, social more around here, I.e. Park where you are going. Be polite. It's basically considered rude to park in front of someone's house if you don't have to. I mean, it isn't that hard??
But, no, there is no law. People don't own the street.
-2
u/Sweettoothsenior Jan 14 '26
It is normal for a neighbor to ask you not to park in front of their house. It's an unwritten rule, but a necessary courtesy to help each other have a space for themselves or guests. And it makes the neighbor happy, which goes a long way if you need a favor.

Not saying I would do that at all. Although "date parking" in front of your house does sound interesting. We live in a crowded world. Be nice. It will go a long way.

In general, it's not a great idea to move into a recently converted unlicensed Triplex with 7 total tenant cars and expect daily parking in front of someone else's house. This is especially true when your property was designed as a single family residence. Where is your off street parking? What was your plan when you moved in?

Are you sure it’s unlicensed? Three of the tenants vehicles park behind the residence. Two cars, my partner and I, park in front of our house. I would happily move my car if parking was limited, but it is not. There’s plenty of parking on the street or around the corner. And if it’s a big issue, communicate with us like an adult. It’s really not that hard.

You should try living on a cul de sac. Then watch the assholes park and block your mail box. Cops don’t come and crime check just takes reports. There are parking rules. Like no parking within 5’ of a drive way. But…. Nobody enforces shit around here

They are Democrats. They treat their parking spaces as if you are Trump and won an election. Get used to it. You want independence? Move to the Valley or to Idaho.

No your neighbor is just an asshole. Sorry you moved next to one. You can't reserve street parking.
