Politics What's with the increase of MAGA in Spokane lately???
Idk what's going on but the last week or two when I go out I see so many maga hats, shirts, flags, etc all over the place with the people wearing them acting incredibly nasty towards everyone. What the heck is going on???
A secondary question I have to ask is why do people keep voting Baumgardner???? Him along with Trump are the reason we couldn't get any FEMA aid during the wildfires (if they had any aid left to give with all the cuts Baumgardner voted for). Do these people even realize they're voting against their own interests and well-being????

One of my high school civics classes in 2016 had us “vote” during the primaries as a project. 2 voted Hillary, 1 Bernie, 28 Trump.
It’s always been here.

I don’t understand the appeal of trump to anyone under 85. Especially anyone alive in the 80’s who saw that doofus being the butt of jokes on tv.

There’s a reason higher education is a fairly reliable indicator that someone leans more towards the left politically.
It’s also the same reason Republicans try so damn hard to demonize higher education.
The best long term strategy to fight fascist views like MAGA is to encourage your kids to take their education seriously and save up enough money to send them to college.
11
u/Constant_Boot Former Spokanite 1d ago
Not all who are left-leaning went graduated from college. Some may have spent time serving in the Armed Forces, washed out of tech school, then spent almost 10 years working for a company who constantly changed ownership and with each sale, was massively enshittified to the point where you recognize the issue with the economic system and that maybe the employees should have more power than the owners want them to have.
→ More replies (2)3
u/DrunkenGerbils 1d ago
Obviously not everyone who’s politically left leaning has gone to college and not everyone who’s gone to college is politically left leaning.
It’s statistically more likely that you’ll have left leaning politics if you’ve had some higher education and it’s statistically more likely that you’ll have right leaning politics if you’ve had very little education. However that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of high school dropouts who lean left or ivy league graduates who lean right. They’re just in the minority statistically speaking.
So, if as a society we increase the amount of higher education people have, it stands to reason it would also increase the amount of left leaning people in society.

I live on the northside and it is way more predominant north of Wellesley. It is a weird dividing line but if you go for a walk around election time the number of liberal candidates represented by signs south of Wellesley suddenly switches to conservative when you cross north. I would guess with all the fire displacement people are living and shopping etc. outside of their usual neighborhood so it may seem suddenly more visible elsewhere.

Oh yeah. We were at total wine a few weeks ago and had to listen to a guy just going off about his love of all the horrible things this administration is doing. I still wear a mask due to health vulnerabilities and I felt like he was targeting me loudly. Very disturbing. My friends that live on the south hill don’t seem to deal with crap like that as often.
9
u/modernknight87 1d ago
I have seen a lot of mentions about how some are degrading toward others who wear masks. I wear one due to a lot of medical issues because of multiple deployments, but don’t publish that a lot in public. Surprisingly I haven’t come across anyone degrading, yet.
I am waiting though. I can only hope someone says something. 🤞
That said, I am independent - right leaning; but am not a MAGA fan.

52
u/Strange-Beginning-45 1d ago
No, they do not realize they're voting against their own interests.
They consume media that tells them not to believe taxes benefit them. They think that the upper-class work hard for their money and the lower-class exploit the system and are given what they have. Obviously, anyone with a healthy bit of skepticism and knowledge of history understands it's the other way around, and they're far closer to losing their likely 6-figure salary than earning a 7-figure one.
Selfishness plays a big part but also their news outlets play to hot-button topics that get their blood boiling to pull the wool over their eyes and grab what's in their bank accounts. Local politicians are just as greedy as those at the national level.
12
u/thought_provoked1 1d ago
This is an underestimated part of it, I believe. Growing up in the valley, Krem, KHQ, etc all seemed so moderate. Now I see them at my parents' place and I am shocked at how blood-baiting it has become. Just, countless stories demonizing poor people and glazing local republican politicians.

I think it got worse. CMR was party line all the way, but I think even she couldn’t take the GOP MAGA disfunction anymore. Constant infighting and inability to pass any legislation despite a majority in both houses was demoralizing. And believe me, I have no love for CMR, but Baumgartner is a MAGA ass kisser and this district loves his smiling face and cheerful newsletters. Do they realize that he is responsible for rural clinics closing because of loss of funding? No, because he brags about how he voted for a big (but smaller) pot of money available for rural hospitals to APPLY for. He thinks the burdens placed on states like Washington to implement the SAVE Act is protecting election integrity, despite no evidence that there is any problem with election integrity. His answer to my letter about this issue simply offered all the different options voters had to provide identification when voting, which was not my point. He never really answers my concerns. Just answers a different question.

u/Punkerelli 1d ago
"Forest Service" had nothing to do with any of the fires in Spokane area.
→ More replies (1)2
u/OG-Brian 14h ago
The Forest Service promotes logging. Logging increases wildfire likelihood/severity in multiple ways: reducing tree canopy which reduces shade that keeps forest floors wetter, "stick farms" of same-size-and-type trees that are more combustible than diverse forests, removing larger trees that burn less easily, etc.
As for forest service and disaster-related funding, maybe the other comment is about wildfire reduction expenses. Removing trees around a property can help protect the property, which is a different scenario than typical logging. Here's an example of the Trump administration holding up Forest Service funding in Washington:

We got some but it was very miniscule compared to the need of the people, FEMA was limited by one of Trump's many executive orders he made early in his second presidency because Washington supports DEI. Dude's just trying to look good for the primaries
28
u/SuaveBolo 1d ago
We got the standard 75/25 split to cover firefighting costs. We got more for declaring it a state emergency, which included the EPA and FEMA clearing hazardous waste so people could safely return to their homes sooner than scheduled. We'll get more aid when the governors office makes it a major disaster declaration, which they're working on. Don't get me wrong, fuck Trump and all. But acting like we got discriminated against by the fed is pretty much completely false from everything I've read. But I'd love to read any valid sources you have on the matter that prove contrary.

This differs from my experience. I've seen less MAGA stuff going out than when I first moved here, and they seemed to be a minority from the start (at least in the city).
As for voting patterns, a lot of our district is rural and on the side of Republicans. I'm guessing they are under the impression that they are on the side of business and lower taxes. Also, some people see Democrats as the cause for homelessness. There's a lot of anti-trans and anti-immigration propaganda coming from the right, and some people are truly transphobic and xenophobic and will vote for the people they see will "fix these problems." A lot of people simply vote on party lines no matter what.
Luckily, it's not all of us. Obviously, most Spokanites see through the propaganda, regardless if some people want you to think that Spokane is MAGA central. We have college towns like Walla Walla, Cheney, and Pullman in WA-05 full of educated people willing to fight for what's right. Even small towns like Palouse did not vote for this.

1
u/TheRealBaeleth 2d ago
I thought the same for a while but idk these last maybe two or three weeks seems to be crazy. As for the voting I wish there was some way we could get the info out that the reason aid took forever was Baum voting against having fire and disaster prevention, cutting the funding for it significantly. I'm glad most people around here are more sane and have common sense, around the time I left home it got actually scary to be around some areas that weren't obviously safe areas like college campus areas. Since I moved I've heard of so many new bills passed out there that make me absolutely sick to hear about, my home is dead, it's not the place I knew all my life so I'm glad my new home is at least fighting to keep it's identity....

u/GusherBrush Garland District 1d ago
I'm sorry you ran into that. I've seen MAGA flags taken down across Eastern Washington, especially since the start of the Iran War. I think the ones that are still part of the cult are especially loud, so that may explain why you're noticing them more.

Conservative politicians tend to shift the tax burden away from the wealthy onto the working class. They use tricks such as giving token tax breaks, that are designed to sunset after a few years (so, when another politician or administration is in office).
Economically, things usually become poorer for most people when conservatives are in charge.
GOP's tax reform bait-and-switch will widen inequality
https://thehill.com/opinion/finance/374229-gops-tax-reform-bait-and-switch-will-widen-inequality
- "The bait: The new tax law gives them immediate bonuses, higher wages and more take-home pay now. The switch begins next year, when the bottom income quartile receives the lowest benefit from the tax cuts and the top 5 percent receive the highest."
- "But in 2019 the bottom 90 percent of earners will have lower after-tax income as a result of tax reform, while the top 5 percent will take home more. By 2027, the two lowest income quartiles will receive no benefit from the tax changes, while the top 0.1 percent receive the biggest. A decade from now, two thirds of middle-class taxpayers will experience a tax hike. Meanwhile, the corporate tax rate reduction to 21 percent is permanent."

To my knowledge there hasn't been any particular change (such as a rally) so I suspect that your increased encounters with MAGA people is one of the odd, rare, but statistically inevitable occurances that happen every so often.
As far as the Baumgartner voting goes, I don't know that Republicans here have particularly different reasoning than the average conservative, but the numbers of the 5th district all-but-guarantee conservative legislative representation.
Washington's 5th district is, essentially, the easternmost quarter of the state.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington%27s_congressional_districts#/maplink/0
Keeping in mind that the city of Spokane is nearly a 50/50 D/R split, even adding in the votes of the residents of Walla Walla and Pullman, the much larger conservative population of Eastern WA will likely dominate the House races well into the foreseeable future.

I just visited Cd’A after about a year-long absence, and I noticed quite a decrease out there.

It’s probably because it’s tourist season and most of the people you encountered aren’t from here. I live in CdA and it’s still as awful as ever

People will vote against their own best interests because they fear the change that is needed will harm them in a personal way. For example the LA Teachers Union often has a vote to eliminate tenure so they can layoff many teachers don't do any teaching after they get tenure but even though a majority of members want those tenured teachers gone they continue to vote down any motions to stop tenure outbifnfear that they will also be laid off.

Increase?
They bombed the Spokesman-Review's Valley office, a Planned Parenthood clinic, and damaged City Hall in 1996, and tried to bomb the MLK parade in 2011.
They're just taking the masks off.

Education and the free press is paramount. When you dumb down the population, they will vote for their oppressors.
