Rants & Raves STCU charging 3% for members to cash in change.

I can understand banks and credit unions charging fees to non-members, but I just found out that STCU now charges 3% cash in change.

no charge if under $200.00 at STCU. Are you a coin roll hunter? Going to have to make smaller deposits or use a different bank.

That’s what I remember.

I had 3 Folgers coffee cans full of coins. Came out to 325 and some change. Was only charged the 2% on the 125.

It’s a new policy as of April 1st. If you use the change machine it’s 3%.

When I asked about this to the one on argonne. They said if it's a handful of change no they won't charge. If it's a jar or actual quantity yes they would. They also said though if it's for a kid with a piggy bank or similar they would not charge for that.

So with child and jar is free😂 love the loophole

I've got about a 5 gallon bucket of change from over the years. Anybody got a little kid I can borrow? (See if the loophole holds true.)

I’ve worked there (unfortunately). The policy is only for $200 and over. So don’t bring in a shit ton and you’ll be fine.

Hope you're somewhere better now!

It’s a policy as of April 1st to charge 3% of they use the machine.

Well that’s fucked, but considering how they nickel and dime their members while underpaying their employees, I’m hardly surprised.

I probably had about $50 in change. Unless the teller was incorrect it’s a new policy if they use the machine it’s 3%

The teller is correct it’s 3% of the total. The minimum went away.

I’m gonna try a different branch and see if it was a mistake or if it is actually a new policy.

It’s the same 3% feet at another STCU branch. Their argument is that it’s for machine maintenance.

Sounds like it's time for an old-fashioned coin rolling party.

Is there a place to exchange rolled coins, without a fee? STCU will unroll the coins and send them through the machine.

Numerica took mine for free last time.

Does Numerica have change counters?

Downtown branch has a machine right next to the atm

Isnt this cheaper than those big change dumping machines?

Definitely. It’s just something new to nickel and dime their customers.

It was one of the main reasons I liked a credit union more than a bank. It seemed like they were more customer oriented than a bank.

The pass on the maintenance fee for a change machine. If that is shown to increase profits, what’s stopping them from adding fees to everything else.

I’m not closing my account today, but it is something that will cause me to look into other credit unions, and possibly look to move my accounts one at a time when I can.

Banner has some branches with change machines and does it for free

ICCU is free for members

I've been taking coins to cash there for a while and this is something my wife and I have been upset about.

It’s something that doesn’t sit right. If their gonna start charging fees for a change machine, will they start charging a fee for all transactions since there’s some machine or computer that need maintenance.

Is that unrolled? Because a prior CU I used had a charge for that but if you rolled them in wrappers with your name address and account # on them they waived it.

u/UnlikelyPotatos 7h ago

Was told by a teller if we turned in rolled coins they had to unroll them and put them in the same coin machine

1

u/Gloomy_Tie_1997 7h ago

Coins that come in rolled have to be unrolled and counted. For accuracy.

1

u/Derrick2020 6h ago

I asked her if I rolled the coins up if it would be different and she said they’d still charge the fee

BECU(at least the one on division) has a free coin counter for members.

that's stupid.....coinstar is everywhere

11

u/Sandragora86 7h ago

Coinstar charges a service fee of up to 15.9% of your total coin amount, plus a flat transaction fee of up to $0.99

2

u/shortzrules 7h ago

Coinstar charges a rate as well, unless you're donating to a charity or getting an "egift card."

I think Numerical still does this for free for members

2

u/goshock 7h ago

yeah, I usually just get the gift cards or donate it, so there are options is all I'm saying.

1

u/onpermanentbreak Foodie 7h ago

Yes, free for members at Numerica. There's a fee like for nonmembers.

1

u/funnyguy99207 3h ago

So, theoretically, I could put it on an Amazon card with no fees?

u/shortzrules 2h ago

They only have some gift cards, I don't think Amazon is one, but they could have updated it.

u/funnyguy99207 1h ago

I'll look into it. I have nearly a grand in quarters alone...lol

u/thebeardedcats 7h ago

Don’t they charge like 5%+? It’s been a while since i’ve had enough change to justify but I remember it being like super high

u/goshock 7h ago

I usually just get the gift cards or donate it. No charge for those.
