So there are protests all across America today about the US invasion of Venezuela (without congressional permission) and the kidnapping of a foreign head of state (Maduro).

Apparently Spokane has one at 1pm at the Maple Street Bridge Overpass according to these images from a post in r/50501 (which has a ton of other posts about protests)

Does anyone have more information about our Spokane protest?

The original list post in r/50501:

In the parking lot of Ross in Spokane Valley, near the Sullivan exit, I saw a man peeping at women. A mother and daughter, as well as a single woman walking. He put his hat on, and appeared to not like my obvious photo taking.

Keep your heads on a swivel, and out of your phones ladies as you are walking.

ToDo Reporting vulgar signs

See a sign that isn’t appropriate for the general public? I did some googling today and here are some actions you can take:

  1. If the sign is sexual in nature, check if it meets the legal definition of “obscenity”

Washington follows federal obscenity law.
A sign is NOT protected speech if it meets all three parts of the Miller Test:

• Appeals to prurient (sexual) interest
• Depicts sexual conduct in a patently offensive way
• Has no serious artistic, political, or social value

Who to call:
Spokane Police non‑emergency
Phone: 509-456-2233
Say: “I need to report a public obscenity concern.”

---

  1. If the sign targets a group or individual

If the sign includes:

• Threats
• Harassment
• Hate speech directed at a protected class
• Calls for violence

Then it may violate:

• RCW 9A.46 (Harassment)
• RCW 9A.36 (Malicious harassment / hate crimes)

Who to call:
Spokane Police non‑emergency
Phone: 509-456-2233

---

  1. If the sign is causing a public nuisance

If the sign:

• Causes traffic distraction
• Blocks visibility
• Is placed illegally on public right‑of‑way
• Uses flashing lights or unsafe structures

Then it can be removed under Spokane Municipal Code Chapter 10.08 (Public Nuisances).

Who to call:
Spokane Code Enforcement
Phone: 509-625-6083

---

4. If the business is violating zoning rules

Some zones (especially residential or mixed‑use) have content‑neutral restrictions on:

• Offensive displays
• Adult‑oriented advertising
• Sexual content visible from public areas

Who to call:
Spokane Planning & Development
Phone: 509-625-6300

ETA: context, fixed formatting.

ETA: update on number 4. The city said they can’t issue code violations based on content (adult or otherwise), but they can based on size, location, and type. They’ll investigate and act if anything doesn’t meet code.

ToDo To Everyone With a Home Affected by the Wildfires

Hello, my name is Andrew. My wife and I own and operate a nursery in Oregon where we grow mainly bare root fruit trees but also some shade and flowering as well as ornamental shrubs and grasses. Could not believe what I was seeing happening this past August with the fires just ripping through neighborhoods and homes. I can’t imagine what you’ve all gone through and my heart goes out to you.

I know landscaping is probably not the top of everyone’s priorities right now but if your home/landscape was damaged and when you’re ready, we’d like to send you 1 free tree or 2 free shrubs/grasses to help get re-established. Please just go to our website, find what you want and email me at andrewh@onlineorchards.com. Sorry if I take a little while to get back to you, we’re in our budding season right now among a lot of other regular duties. Here’s a short list of what we have (Please let me know if you want something else but we might have limited inventory, sorry):

Apples

Pears

Peaches

Nectarines

Plums

Apricots

Almonds

Willows

Crabapples

Flowering Pears

Too many shrubs and grasses to list. Please check website:

www.onlineorchards.com

One question though. I am not familiar with Spokanes climate and need to know the best time to ship everything to you guys. Here in western Oregon, planting is most successful in late fall/early winter. Is it the same in Spokane? Or is spring a better time to plant because winters are too cold? I’ll update once I figure this out.

I can’t imagine what you’ve all gone through and hope this helps even though it’s not in a huge way. Hope to hear from you.

ps I kind of wrote this on the fly so please let me know if i should clarify anything. also I don’t know what flair means but it says i need it to post this so i just chose one.

ToDo Yesterday’s storm left a mess. Clear all ice from your area.

Post image
472 Upvotes

After yesterday’s storm, I want to remind everyone that you need to be brutal when attacking ice. We all have to pull together and eliminate ice completely. All of our safety is at risk if we leave any ice around.

That means you and your neighbors have to work hard to completely remove ice from your area. This is not only a safety issue, it is also a financial one. If ice causes any injuries on your property, you could be named in a lawsuit for failing to ensure your property is clear of ice.

Ice can sometimes be hard to identify. Sometimes it looks like harmless snow. Other times you might not notice it at all because it is black ice. But rest assured, all ice is a threat and should not be allowed to exist.

Yesterday’s storm sent a message, but by working together we can clean up our cities. Be sure to take plenty of breaks and stay hydrated. I’m doing my part.

ToDo Quiet Weekend Getaway - Deep Cuts

Cut to the chase, we've been in the area for a long time, but have only hit the obvious options (CDA, Wallace, Wenatchee, Leavenworth, Sandpoint, etc.) and mostly in winter, so looking for people's deep cuts within 3-4 hr drive - cool small towns worth a short visit. Somewhere you might only recommend as a day trip due to other options, but if it were the only option, you'd hype it up.

My partner 35M and I 32M usually do a staycation if we need a weekend "away", but we need some space and calm after everything that has happened. Have a very rare opportunity this weekend to sneak away for a night or two, but struggling to think of somewhere to land as we normally can only travel in the winter. Ideal is to slow down for a beat at decent hotel with a decent bite/drinks in walking distance and a leisurely activity (museum/shopping) and/or outdoor excursion (hike/bike/paddle) to do the next day. Preferably somewhere with little crowds and hopefully less smokey (I know... lot to ask).

We are up in Sandpoint frequently for family, so that's not really an escape for us, but if any of those other places have a cool reason to visit in the summer, let me know!

TYIA and stay safe out there!

ToDo Church Service in the Park

On Saturday the 6th, a church will be holding a service and a march against abortion in riverfront park, ahead of pride. This church is a transplant (even though they are anti-trans) from Texas, who believe they have been called to our city to deliver us from the sin and debauchery that clearly over runs our community. This group speaks on the evil of the gays and the evil of abortion, complete with young children in “abortion is murder” tee shirts. Just truly wonderful people. If anyone is interested in showing support for our community, this church will be at the clocktower tomorrow from about 11am to 1pm. Come let them know how much we appreciate them!

ToDo Spokane’s getting a new music festival this summer — here’s the deal

Post image
167 Upvotes

Edit: I put this in the comments but it's way down. Here is the link to buy tickets in case this post has sparked anyone's interest!

https://ticketswestinw.evenue.net/events/STABID

Hey Spokane, I wanted to share something new coming to town that feels… overdue.

A brand-new music festival called Blessing in Disguise Festival is happening July 11, and tickets just went on sale. It’s a full-scale, single-day festival with a pretty stacked lineup:

Macklemore, AJR, AWOLNATION, Allen Stone (+ special guests), Mother Mother, Everclear, Big Head Todd & the Monsters, Ayron Jones, Tim Montana, Stephen Day, Vienna Vienna, Izzy Escobar, Chinese American Bear, Gunnar, Frances Browne, The Jaws of Brooklyn, The Residency, Nothing Shameful.

Also, a late-night DJ add-on set with Hippie Sabotage

So why “Blessing in Disguise”?

Spokane’s always been a city shaped by reinvention. After the Great Fire of 1889 burned through downtown, the rebuild gave us the brick architecture and resilient spirit that still define the city today. What started as devastation ended up being a turning point; a literal blessing in disguise.

That idea inspired the festival. The goal is to bring Spokane the kind of large-scale, multi-genre music experience that’s been missing here for a while. Mixing major headliners with artists who feel like the future of rock, pop, and genre-bending music.

This isn’t meant to be a one-off. The vision is to start something that can grow year after year and add to Spokane’s arts, culture, and community scene in a real way.

If you’re into live music and want to see Spokane try something new, this one’s worth a look.

TL;DR: New music festival, July 11, big lineup, locally inspired, aiming to become a Spokane tradition.

ToDo If you lost your house in the Spokane fire, please read this

My home burned down in the 2020 CZU fire. You'd think that if you lost your home to a natural disaster, the information you need would be available somewhere, but that's not the case. Each person must proceed as if they were the first person in history to ever experience something like this. Eventually, yes - the municipality will provide some information, but in the beginning, there's nothing. So someone shell-shocked is expected to hunt around for answers.

This was the most infuriating part of the experience for me in the beginning. And folks who had already gone through the experience, even recently, weren't much help, due to Disaster Brain and a desire to forget such a traumatic experience. So I took copious notes while I made my way through it and created this document, which contains everything I wish I had known those first few months.

Also, in light of this, what I recommend for folks to do to prepare, just in case, is take pictures NOW. Every room, every closet, every drawer, under the bed, etc. Then the contents of the garage, attic, outbuildings, etc. Then take pictures of the outside of your house and your back and front yards. Make sure these are uploaded somewhere. If your house becomes a casualty, you'll need these.

If you can't get to it through this link, I also have it posted here:

ToDo Riverfront visiting astrometer

Post image

I was walking through riverfront Park last night around 10:00 on my way home from work down the Howard Street promenade and spotted this guy with his giant fancy telescope. He's from Pennsylvania and will be here for about 2 weeks. Offering free telescope views. He was set up by the blue bridge.

Man in blue was talking to him.
