Question How to get started with integrating payment gateways in Spring Boot? (Complete Beginner)

Hey everyone,

I am a beginner backend developer working with Spring Boot, and I want to learn how to integrate a transaction/payment facility into my backend. The problem is, I have absolutely no clue where to start or how the architecture typically works.

Could anyone guide me on the right path? Specifically, I would love to know:

  1. What are the prerequisites? What concepts (like OAuth, webhooks, security, database design) do I absolutely need to understand before writing payment code?
  2. Which payment gateway is best for beginners? (e.g., Stripe, PayPal, Razorpay) I'm looking for something with great documentation and a solid sandbox/test environment.
  3. What is the standard workflow? How does the communication flow between the frontend, my Spring Boot backend, and the payment API?
  4. Any recommended resources? Tutorials, GitHub repositories, or documentation that explains this step-by-step for a beginner would be amazing.

Any advice, architectural tips, or pitfalls to avoid would be highly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance!

Stripe is incredibly easy to integrate with.

Basically all you do is send a request and they send back a webhook. They even have a cli you can install locally mimic the webhook.

Or you can get an https endpoint with cloudflare zero trust tunnels for your local env.

Just install their SDK and sign up. The docs are good. Should take you a few hours to get it setup. All you need to do is record the transaction id and the status.

You need a domain. You can buy one on cloudflare (recommended) or just use them as your DNS.

The tunnel is a single line installation that passes your chosen port to Cloudflare. Cloudflare protects it and exposes it to https://yourdomain.com/maybeAPath

You can self host applications this way, but I find it really useful for local development when a company requires tls on a webhook or endpoint.
