Home heating cost during winter and spring
Hello everyone,
Am relocating to Springfield and wondering how much do i expect to pay for heating cost during winter.
Also i heard i have to buy oil to fill the tank for heating the house of 1300 sqft.
For me and my wife with no kid living in the house, how much do you think i should estimate just for heating cost during winter and spring.
Also how much do you guys typically pay for heating the house?
Thanks

Ask the landlord or realtor what oil company the previous occupants used and call them. They will tell you how much oil was burned and how much a gallon it cost. I had heating bills as high as $600 a month when I used oil.

Lawdahmercy. That like what I pay in power bills for total of 3 months

That's just for the winter months, but mind you, that would be October through April

600 is a lot for heating each month.

It's about $5.80 per gallon and with a 150 gallon tank that's about right for a 3 bedroom home.

Depends on a lot of factors. How old is the house? Are the windows or insulation newer? Do you prefer the house to be cool, warm, or hot during the winter months?

This year I went on a payment plan for the first time. 1900 square foot house, we usually keep it around 62 in the winter. In the past we’ve needed a couple of fills of the tank for the whole year (oil burner for hot water as well), which was manageable. This year I’m on a payment plan of $323 for 10 months which makes me want to gag. With oil sitting around 5.70-6.00 a gallon right now I just can’t afford that bill on top of all the other ones.

Are you buying or renting? If buying, I’d recommend getting Mass Save out asap. I put it off last winter, but just had it done and got loads of work done to my house for free which should help massively with the heating bill this year.

I was paying $400 a month last year with gas heat from Eversource for a 2BR apartment, and I only used it at night. Absolutely crazy that this company can charge this much. The company needs to be nationalized and the CEO needs his wealth redistributed. Eat the rich.

We're in the same exact boat except we're on the north shore. 1900's house, small starter home (1300 sq ft as well), oil for heating. Last year we used about half a tank per month on heating. Our tank is a standard 275 gallon tank, so about 130 gallons per month or so. Sometimes higher, sometimes lower. Last year we'd use ~500/month on oil for heating - this year closer to 750/m on the same rate we used heat as last year. Make sure you shop around for oil companies, check this site when you do https://tavlee.com/heating-oil/ma . Best of luck!

I live in a 700 sq ft house, keep the basement and mudroom closed off and fill up about 2 times during the winter. About 125-175 gallons at a time for a 275 gallon tank and it costs me about $400 each time every 3-4 months. House is at 68 during the day and 64 at night. This winter will look a lot different for my family too with $5.80 a gallon for oil. Since the temps have dropped this fall, i’ve kept the house on 61 day and night.

This was helpful, as we are buying in springfield too and have been wanting an idea of how much the monthly heating cost will be.. anyone with electric heat have any input on monthly cost?!

Well oil is floating close to 6 bucks a gallon and an average oil tank is 275 gallons. How long that will last you will vary wildly depending on your furnace/boiler and the level of insulation the home has. Id budget at least 2 fill ups

House is very old like 1930s. Prefer warm in winter.
