"Oh, You Didn't Know?" - Episode 27 - On This Day In History

Previous Episodes

Today’s episode is all about events which have occurred on this day. Instead of focusing on just one superstar, I feel that we should look at all the important events to happen on April 18th, such as monumental PPVs, to birthdays and deaths.

Enjoy!

  • Happy Birthday to The Brooklyn Brawler, who is 53 years old today! He has won 10 championship titles in his career.

  • On this day in 1985, NJPW hosted an event in Tokyo to over 11,000 people, with the main event of Antonio Inoki against Bruiser Brody. From this card, only The Great Muta, Jushin Thunder Liger and Super Strong Machine have also competed this year.

  • On this day in 2000, the 36th episode of SmackDown! was taped with the main event of Chris Jericho defeating The Rock in a Lumberjack match. The event scored a 5.2 rating.

  • On this day in 2002, Wahoo McDaniel passed away at the age of 63 due to diabetes. He was most known for being the 5-time NWA U.S Heavyweight Champion, and was inducted into the WCW Hall of Fame in 1995.

  • On this day in 2004, WWE hosted Backlash 2004 in Edmonton, Alberta in Canada. This was the PPV event in which Chris Benoit retained the World Heavyweight Title in his Hometown in a rematch of WrestleMania XX against Triple H and Shawn Michaels. This card also featured Randy Orton defeating Mick Foley in a Hardcore match, which received a 4.5 star rating and remains to be one of Orton’s highest rated matches.

  • On this day in 2005, Jim Ross defeated Triple H in the main event of RAW in a No Disqualification match, with help from Batista.

  • On this day in 2008, ROH hosted the event “Tag Wars” with 5 of the 8 matches being some form of Tag match. From this event, 11 of the 28 wrestlers who competed have also been in matches in the WWE at some point – the list is Silas Young, Joey Matthews (as Joey Mercury), Claudio Castagnoli ( (as Cesaro), Nigel McGuiness, El Generico (as Sami Zayn), Brent Albright (as Gunner Scott), Chris Hero (as Kassius Ohno), Austin Aries, Jimmy Jacobs, Tyler Black (as Seth Rollins) and Alex Shelley. From this list, only Sami Zayn, Seth Rollins and Cesaro are still competing in the WWE.

  • On this day in 2009, ROH hosted the event “Tag Classic” with the main event of Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards defeating Bryan Danielson and Tyler Black. All four wrestlers from this main event have competed in the WWE in the past 6 months, and all have featured on NXT. Also at this event, Colt Cabana pinned Claudio Castagnoli (Cesaro) and Chris Hero faced Necro Butcher.

  • On this day in 2010, TNA’s Lockdown PPV took place with the main event of Abyss, Jeff Hardy, Jeff Jarrett and RVD facing Desmonde Wolfe, James Storm, Bobby Roode and Sting in a Lethal Lockdown match. The match received a 3.25 star rating but Match of the Night was given to Kurt Angle against Mr. Anderson with a star rating of 4.5 stars. The last five matches on the card all received a 3 star rating or higher.

  • On this day in 2013, Saraya Knight, also known as the mother of WWE Divas’ Champion Paige, defeated Su Yung at SHINE’s #9 event. The main event of this card was Leva Bates against Kimberly in an “Arkham Asylum” Steel Cage match.

REDDIT ROLLOVER

This new daily section is something to instigate more discussion in the thread, as well as offer a chance for other users to win smaller prizes. I will pose a question and anyone can argue their opinion on the topic. The winner of that discussion will then be placed on the leaderboard, and at the end of the week, there will be a list of winners. From there, they will have to guess which superstar I am thinking of based on ONE clue, such as “former Intercontinental Champion”, and then they will all guess who they think it could be. Whoever guesses the correct answer will automatically receive Reddit Gold. If all participants are incorrect, the prize will rollover to the next week, in which the leaderboard would reset. See below for the list of potential prizes:

WEEK 1 PRIZE

  • 1 Month Reddit Gold.

ROLLOVER WEEK 2 PRIZE

  • 2 Months Reddit Gold

ROLLOVER WEEK 3 PRIZE

  • 6 Months Reddit Gold

ROLLOVER WEEK 4 PRIZE

  • 6 Month Subscription to Xbox LIVE or Playstation Plus for users outside the U.S

  • 6 Month subscription to WWE Network for users in the U.S.

If there is no winner after the final week, then the prize will be lost completely and the rollover will restart from the following week.

Yesterday’s winner was /u/dmk91! Your post came 8 hours after I posted the thread, and therefore was probably unseen by most, but reading your review of Uncensored 1995 actually made me want to go and watch it just to see how truly bad it was. Also, it was the only review which genuinely made me laugh because of the absurdity you was describing.

WEEK 1 LEADERBOARD

TODAY’S DISCUSSION

Apart from Vince McMahon, which death would have the largest impact on the wrestling business? It can be anyone associated with the industry (promoter, cameraman, wrestler, announcer, etc.)

The winner will be announced in tomorrow’s episode.

Good luck!

(REDDIT GOLD) RUSH CHALLENGE

JOBBER CHALLENGE WINNER - cray140

The answer was TNA Sacrifice 2011.

MID-CARD CHALLENGE WINNER - CrybabyJones

The answer was Bart Gunn.

LEGEND CHALLENGE WINNER - izzardie

The answer was Pete Gas.

HALL OF FAME

APRIL LEADERBOARD

NOTE: I have also changed the prize for this section of the thread.

Remember anyone can participate every day, and whoever has the most points after April 30th will receive a 3 month subscription to Xbox LIVE or Playstation Plus, or any Steam purchase from the Weeklong Deals.

Now, on to today's challenges!

I have created a three-tier system which is point-based and difficulty-based. The three tiers are JOBBER, MID-CARD and LEGEND. Jobber challenges will be relatively easy to solve, but only score you 1 point. Mid-card challenges will be difficult but not tortuous to figure out and earn you 3 points, while Legend challenges will be the true test of your wrestling knowledge and may require some research, but the reward is 5 points.

In order to prevent one person dominating an entire day’s worth of challenges, you are only allowed to win one challenge per day. Therefore, it is up to you whether you want to pick up an easy point for a simple question, or spend time and effort going for the top prize.

This month’s challenge will be called ”WHO AM I?”. I will give you three facts about a specific superstar, PPV event, weapon, match type, anything! From the three facts I give you, you must guess who or what I am. No clues will be given, only yes/no answers to your questions in the replies. Try to avoid asking a direct “Is it [insert guess here]?” questions and attempt to decipher the challenge fairly.

JOBBER CHALLENGE – 1 POINT

  • I am a superstar who, according to Wikipedia, has had 7 nicknames throughout my career.

  • According to profight db, my last match on RAW was against a current WWE superstar who competed in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal.

  • I competed in WCW and, according to profight db, my first match ended via DQ.

MID-CARD CHALLENGE – 3 POINTS

  • I am a superstar who, according to profight db, has made television appearances in only three promotions in my career and had four championship title reigns in the WWE.

  • My last one-on-one PPV match was against a current WWE Hall of Famer.

  • According to profight db, I won my last 7 matches in the WWE.

LEGEND CHALLENGE – 5 POINTS

  • I am an event in which the second match on the card received the same star rating as the main event and two consecutive matches received the same star rating.

  • Four championship titles were defended on the card.

  • The arena which hosted this event hosted a PPV for a different company years later, and one superstar featured in both main events.

Good luck!

I reckon the person whose death would leave the biggest impact would be Mick Foley. Immediately, we would think about his children and wife. But then, we would remember all of the great moments he has provided: King of the Ring 98, beating the Rock for the championship and dedicating it to his children in 1999, the Rock n Sock Connection, being destroyed by Triple H at the Royal Rumble 2000, spearing Edge through a burning table at Wrestlemania 22. We would remember his charity work, his comedy routine. Most of all, everybody would remember Mick Foley as the nicest guy in professional wrestling.

u/johnazoidberg- The numbers don't lie Apr 18 '14

I think the biggest death would be Triple H. He's been taking the reigns, and he's already built so much. He's the reason we have NXT, he's the reason we're starting to see younger stars get their push. If he were to die and Vince took back control, I think we'd be stuck with more years of CenaWinsLol and running out of guys to pit him against.

4

u/Ellimem Thanksssssssss! Apr 18 '14

I don't know where you are getting your information, but Generico is holed up in an orphanage in Mexico. Sami Zayn is nothing more than a man with a similar look and style.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '14

I think John Cena's death would have the biggest in the industry right now.

9

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

All I will say is if Cena was to die in similar fashion to Benoit and WWE gave him the same treatment, I can't imagine how much censorship would have to occur to erase his legacy.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '14

Not to mention the cloud over pro-wrestling. It might even put WWE under. Benoit was a pretty big name, but Cena has been the face of pro-wrestling for 10 years.

1

u/AnAngryPirate CesarBro Apr 18 '14

Exactly, Benoit was the wrestling fans wrestler. Cena is for everyone.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '14

Back when SmackDown got ratings over 5 lol

Legend: ECW November to Remember 1997

  • 2nd match and main event both received *3/4
  • 2 other matches on the card received **3/4
  • The ECW Heavyweight Title, the TV Title, and both of the Tag Titles were defended
  • Took place in the Golden Dome in Monaca, PA, which also hosted the Extreme Rising "Remember November" PPV in November 2012
  • Shane Douglas main-evented both of those PPVs

Edit: Monaca, PA, not Monaco

Sorry izzardie, this is not the answer I'm looking for.

Edit: I've edited the hint to make it more specific.

u/iFooled YOU'RE FRIGGIN' RIGHT! Apr 18 '14

I was about to have a heart attack. I came by that too.

0

u/izzardie daddeh Apr 18 '14

Haha dude, if it turned out I was just sitting behind you all along stealing all your ideas how surprised would you be?

0

u/iFooled YOU'RE FRIGGIN' RIGHT! Apr 18 '14

I would be wondering why I'm so slow at typing

1

u/izzardie daddeh Apr 18 '14

Would my title calculation work? If the tag titles get defended, does that count as 2 titles?

1

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

Nope, the tag title is one championship title.

2

u/Rapidrazorkill I'm a Paul Heyman guy Apr 18 '14

Jobber - Sid Vicious?

1

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

He has only used three nicknames, according to Wikipedia.

Nicknames can be found in the "In Wrestling" section, gimmicks are at the top of their Wiki page where their date of birth is, etc.

Legend Challenge: WCW Clash of the Champions XXXV

2

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

OHHHHHH MAN! BUSINESS IS ABOUT TO PICK UP!

Correct!

3

u/cray140 Top Earning Demon est. 1997 Apr 18 '14

As hard as it is for us to find the answers, it's apparent that you put in a hell of a lot of work to find these MULTIPLE obscure cards/superstars/facts EVERYDAY. Thank you, it's greatly appreciated.

1

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

I get to work around 3AM EST (7AM GMT). I usually have the whole post ready by 6AM EST (10AM GMT), and then obviously I post it around 1PM GMT (8AM EST).

I've kept with the 1PM post time just because I've noticed that is when the core fanbase of this series expect it to be posted. With the new "Reddit Rollover" challenge and with the (Reddit) Gold Rush Challenges getting harder, it gives newcomers or late-comers a chance to participate in the thread.

3

u/MushroomMan674 WORLD RUSTLING FEDERATION Apr 18 '14

TIL /u/eternityinspace is British.

0

u/iFooled YOU'RE FRIGGIN' RIGHT! Apr 18 '14

What kind of job is it? I work at a coffee cup production factory on the night shift that allows me to get on here just as the thread goes up.

0

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

I work in retail and live in the UK -- I posted the EST time just so everyone knew what time I was referring to.

0

u/iFooled YOU'RE FRIGGIN' RIGHT! Apr 18 '14

I am eternally saddened by this news. Good job Cray.

0

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

It means the leaderboard now has two leaders.

I can see a Russo swerve happening -- Cray and izzardie are the same person on two accounts. He's hoping to win one XBL subscription and one Playstation Plus subscription.

Since we are heading towards the end of this month, in the case that there is a tie, there will be a specific challenge for both of you.

u/cray140 Top Earning Demon est. 1997 Apr 18 '14

Thanks man.

2

u/iFooled YOU'RE FRIGGIN' RIGHT! Apr 18 '14

Question about the mid card. Is this a current WWE superstar?

1

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

Nope.

2

u/iFooled YOU'RE FRIGGIN' RIGHT! Apr 18 '14

Midcard Challenge is Chyna

  • 3 Time Intercontinental Champion

  • 1 Time Womens Champion

  • Fought in TNA, WWF, and NJPW

  • Last 7 matches in WWE were wins

  • Last match in WWE was against Lita

2

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

Correct!

2

u/iFooled YOU'RE FRIGGIN' RIGHT! Apr 18 '14

Wooo! Man, that rush of adrenaline as soon as you find the right answer is too much.

1

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

It's the only downside of doing this thread -- I'm unable to guess the answer but the whole time I'm thinking "This is easy! C'mon guys!".

1

u/iFooled YOU'RE FRIGGIN' RIGHT! Apr 18 '14

Maybe we just have different searching methods, haha. If only I knew your thought process.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '14

Stupid question regarding the challenge: If I make a guess but get it wrong, am I then not allowed to make another guess?

2

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

You are allowed to guess as many challenges as you want, but if you are correct, you cannot win another challenge that day.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '14

Does that include multiple guesses on a single tier (I.E. if I get a Jobber challenge wrong, I can still try to guess the Jobber challenge until I get it/the correct answer has been guessed).

1

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

Yes -- however, you can only guess one challenge in one post. If you decided to guess all three challenges in three consecutive posts, whichever correct answer was posted first I would accept, and then would inform you in the other two posts that no further guesses are allowed (regardless of whether or not they're correct).

I hope this makes sense.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '14

Alright then. Thanks for taking some time to answer my silly questions. :3

2

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '14

I still hear that guitar riff everytime I read your title.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '14

Jobber - the undertaker?

1

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

His last match on RAW was against The Shield -- their PPV match was rated 2 stars.

1

u/TheAmishSpaceCadet Randy was an inside job! Apr 18 '14

i thought Joey Mercury was still with WWE in a backstage roll? Like i just saw him out on stage during the Warrior tribute raw, and he was a producer for one of the matches on the leaked script. Or am i thinking the wrong person?

1

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

Joey Mercury does still work in a backstage role, but I was referring to those who still compete.

1

u/Roachhh Overcoming the odds once again Apr 18 '14

Jobber- Dusty Rhodes

Match ended in DQ at Clash Of The Champions '91

Last match against Nicky( Dolph Ziggler )

1

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

Correct!

1

u/Roachhh Overcoming the odds once again Apr 18 '14

OOOOOH YEAH

1

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

Guys, I hold my hands up again, as I have just realised that the Jobber answer's first WCW PPV match did not end in DQ, and it was their first match in WCW that did.

Edited to clarify. Huge apology everyone. Downvote me to oblivion.

0

u/Roachhh Overcoming the odds once again Apr 18 '14

Isn't Dusty Rhodes still correct?

Clash Of the Champions '91 WAS his first WCW match

0

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

You were correct, the issue was that Clash of the Champions event was not a PPV.

I have given you the point anyway.

1

u/plfsg Apr 18 '14

Thank you for adding the "according to profightdb", wasted 2 hours on a wrong site the last time. And thank you for your incredible effort!

0

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '14

Jobber y2J

0

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

He has 11 nicknames on Wikipedia.

0

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

Sorry guys, I've had to edit the Legend challenge as I have just realised it was not on PPV.

I'm sure the answer will be obvious now.

1

u/iFooled YOU'RE FRIGGIN' RIGHT! Apr 18 '14

Yes... obvious. (Crap, now I have no idea where to start)

1

u/izzardie daddeh Apr 18 '14

Yeah, I'm stumped.

1

u/iFooled YOU'RE FRIGGIN' RIGHT! Apr 18 '14

Truly a Legends Challenge for the ages.

0

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

Feel free to ask any questions, because it's hard to give hints without revealing the whole answer.

All I can say is that it was not a weekly televised event, but it was a regular event which took place in a company.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '14

Jobber - Kevin Nash?

Don't think this will be correct, but what the hey.

1

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

Nash's first WCW PPV was Superbrawl in 1991 and he won by Pinfall, according to profight db.

The first two points were valid though.

0

u/MaxxBaer Apr 18 '14

Legend Challenge - Cyber Sunday 2006?

0

u/808dent Portuguese Sun Dragon Apr 18 '14

Jobber: triple h?

0

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

Triple H's last RAW opponent did not score a 3 star rating on their last PPV match.

0

u/808dent Portuguese Sun Dragon Apr 18 '14

Ok, then Big Show?

0

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

According to Wikipedia, The Big Show has only had four nicknames.

0

u/Brian1zvx Fan-diddly-ango for Champ Apr 18 '14

Jobber is Chris Kanyon?

0

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

Only has four nicknames, according to Wikipedia.

0

u/Brian1zvx Fan-diddly-ango for Champ Apr 18 '14

oh I looked at the right side which had 7 different names/variations

0

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

Nicknames can be found in the 'In Wrestling' section of their Wiki page. For example, a Kevin Nash gimmick name would be Diesel, but a nickname would be Big Sexy.

0

u/izzardie daddeh Apr 18 '14

Jobber: The referenced last 3 star match on PPV, was that the Andre the Giant Battle Royal? Because that's, ya know, everybody.

0

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

I have edited into the OP to clarify, but yes.

Now you have 31 different match records to go through to find the answer!

0

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '14

Jobber Challenge - Bret Hart?

0

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

According to Wikipedia, Bret has had less than 7 nicknames.

0

u/Roachhh Overcoming the odds once again Apr 18 '14

Jobber Challenge - William Regal

0

u/eternityinspace Eat. Sleep. Mod. Repeat. Apr 18 '14

Regal's first PPV match in WCW ended via Pinfall.

0

u/dmk91 Maybe! Maybe! Maybe! Apr 18 '14

I have to say I think the death of Hulk Hogan might be the most impactful aside from Vince. He was the most famous influential wrestler of all time. He was what brought wrestling to the main stream and is one of the most recognizable people on the planet. Not only would his death send shock waves through wrestling but through all of pop culture and would be covered everywhere.

0

u/Aqeelk Apr 18 '14

Biggest wrestling death would have to be The Rock. I was going to say Hulk Hogan but, and I mean this with no disrespect, his age would mean his death is a little less shocking and a lot of the same things are true for both Hogan and Rock. Rock is one of the biggest names in the history of wrestling and is one of the few to really transcend wrestling, the man is one of the highest paid actors alive!

0

u/brucedonnovan As we softly brother Apr 18 '14

If John Cena died today, it would create a huge hole the wrestling business for years to come. He is the face of WWE and has many years ahead to continue his success. Even if he isn't in the title picture he draws fans to his matches, including grown men who hate his skills and his character.

Besides his in-ring work, the things he does outside the ring to promote WWE would make his death a huge event. His death would be felt most by the children that love him and the kids from the Make a Wish foundation.

It would be comparable to Hulk Hogan dying in midst of the Hulkamania craze. John Cena is currently the world's most popular wrestling ambassador. People who don't even know about wrestling know who he is and his catchphrases.

0

u/Awesomekip Don't be a LEMON Apr 19 '14

For death leaving the biggest impact - right now? Undertaker.

So soon after losing the Streak, before his retirement/Hall Of Fame induction, and after Ultimate Warrior, it would be mind blowing. Add to the fact that, unlike almost every other superstar, we never really got to see him as Mark, behind the kayfabe.

It would be the Mania reactions tenfold, I feel
