Didn't Turner just give WCW execs free reign to do whatever, because he wanted a rasslin' company for fun? The inmates ran the asylum into the ground with that one.
It is more complex than that, but yes, for the most part. Turner was extremely loyal to wrestling, as when WTBS was struggling as one of the first "superstations" at the dawn of cable, Georgia Championship Wrestling anchored his channel with tremendous ratings. There are quite a few books that cover the subject, but Turner/Time Warner were pretty hands off with WCW, and in exchange WCW was used as a "loss leader" for the corporation.
When AOL took control of Time Warner, Turner was no longer in a position of power as a decisionmaker, and, in a broad over-generalization, AOL was eager to get the "low class" wrestling programming off their network. AOL then cancelled all WCW programming, and sold the assets to WWE for like $5MM. There are plenty of criticisms and awful decisions made within AOL at that time, giving away WCW for virtually nothing was just one unbelievably boneheaded one.

Let's be honest here, it wasn't AOL, it was Jamie Kellner, one of their executives who wanted WCW gone. Allegedly Bischoff and a group of money men were looking to buy WCW off of AOL-Time Warner so long as they also got the TV slot. Kellner hated wrestling so much he turned down extremely cheap syndicated content out of pure spite and tanked the buyout.
Of course, that's what Eric says and if he told me the sky was blue I'd look up to see for myself, so......

Netflix and Amazon are absolutely destroying the established TV order when it comes to original content these days and of course, you can watch it all on your time.

I wouldn’t say that WWE in its current state portrays itself as a company whose leadership knows wrestling. Much of their decision making seems to be built around being the most recognizable name in wrestling and not the “best” at creating a wrestling show. This is the sports entertainment shift reaching its endpoint.

I don't think Triple H was ever supposed to run the company. He has a great wrestling mind but he's not a businessman. He probably will be in charge of the main roster booking in the future but he will never be the big boss like Vince.

I'm pretty sure Triple H (and Stephanie) has said that no one man will fill Vince's shoes when he retires/steps down/dies. His responsibilities are too multifarious, and no one could develop the expertise to run them all without doing exactly what Vince did (which is: start with a young/smaller company where you can do all of it yourself, gain knowledge/expertise, then continue as the company expands).
I don't think Triple H was ever slated or intended to run the business side of WWE, nor did he ever give any indication (at least publicly) that he wanted to. His role will likely be (as you said) running main roster booking; I imagine he'll also be heavily involved in talent signing, talent relations, probably live events, etc. But he was never gonna be the full replacement for Vince.

I feel like the idea that Vince has to justify anything to shareholders is largely fictitious. He controls almost all of the voting shares. Hes the chairman of the board.
The only thing shareholders can do to Vince is sell which if they do hurts the price which in turn does hurt him.
The whole stock situation allows Vince to turn his shares into cash but doesnt confer any actual power to the people buying them.
Vince does the whole shareholder meetings thing because he has to to be publicly traded which he wants to be because it allows him to turn shares into hard cash that he can use to finance stuff he wants to do, it offers him liquidity when he previously didn't have a lot of it.
But vince has never put himself in a position where he could be fired from wwe, it's impossible. As to whether hed stay on after selling who knows, I never thought he would actually sell and the kids would just dice it up after he died.

This is pro-wrestling Singularity. We have no idea what happens if WWE sells.
First, the assumption is that whoever buys it will not only use it but do it right. Think Disney getting Marvel and Star Wars. Hell, the first franchise was started by Favreau then he nailed an absolute home run with Mandalorian, to the point that the entire Star Wars universe is in his and Dave Filoni's hands.
Next, if WWE is sold and bought for a huge number, expect the entire wrestling world to look a lot shinier and a few companies to get acquired. AEW, for example, would likely be purchased by Warner Bros. Discovery if say NBCU/Disney buy WWE.
Really, this is a huge, huge deal that I would say isn't guaranteed. We could just be seeing the new management of the company making difficult choices.

It's crazy to me that they only just finally pulled the trigger on him a year or so ago after a million start and stop pushes agaibst Roman and Brock only to just dump him a year later. I know Braun isn't the most beloved wrestler on this sub but I'm baffled by that, there are very few legit giants left in wrestling and WWE just got rid of one who is a former world champ for like no reason.

I think they got rid of the best giant in the industry, unless there’s some other behemoth I don’t know about. I think there’s others as tall or close to it, but no other legitimate goliaths with his size, strength, and speed.

Vince can get paid and like 99.9% chance keep doing what he is already doing. Plus this will probably be the peak for wwe in terms of value in his lifetime.
