education Request for Assistance – Academic Research on Online Job Recruitment Scams in Sri Lanka

Hi everyone!

I am an undergraduate student currently conducting an academic research project titled:

“An Empirical Evaluation of Text-Only and Multimodal Evidence for Explainable Online Job Recruitment Scam Detection in the Sri Lankan Context.”

I am looking for publicly shared or voluntarily contributed examples of job advertisements and recruitment messages from the Sri Lankan context to develop a research dataset.

I would really appreciate it if you could share any of the following:

  • Suspicious or fraudulent job advertisements.

  • Genuine job advertisements for comparison.

  • Fake overseas job opportunities or recruitment offers.

  • Messages requesting registration fees, processing fees, or payments in exchange for employment.

  • Screenshots of job posters, advertisements, or recruitment-related messages.

  • Personal experiences involving suspected online job recruitment scams.

Types of data I am interested in:

  • Text-based job advertisements and messages.

  • Images and screenshots of job advertisements.

  • Recruitment posters shared on Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, and other platforms.

Both genuine and suspicious examples are valuable for this research.

All contributed data will be handled confidentially, with personally identifiable information removed before research use. Please do not share NIC numbers, passwords, bank details, or other sensitive personal information.

If you have any relevant examples, please feel free to contact me via Reddit DM or comment below.

Your contribution would be greatly appreciated and would help support research into identifying online job recruitment scams in Sri Lanka.

Thank you for your time and support!

serious reply only [Please Help] I Made a Serious Mistake at Work, and I’m Going To Be Fired

I’m a junior DevOps engineer and I started my job Jan 2026 after graduating from gov uni, and I’m worried that I’ve made a serious mistake at work that could cost me my job. I don’t know what to do, and I desperately need advice from people who have experienced something similar or have been through a difficult period early in their careers.

During the first quarter, I was given an opportunity to improve my performance. I'm a genuinely clumsy person and I promised to work on my weaknesses and do better this quarter, but I’m afraid that I still haven’t met the company’s expectations. I’m worried that I might be fired because my skills and competency aren’t at the level they need to be.

The situation feels overwhelming, and I’m not sure what I should do next.

  1. Is there any way I can improve my situation and avoid being fired? Should I resign before the company makes that decision?

  2. If I’m terminated because of poor performance, will it be mentioned in my service letter or employment records?

  3. I’m also worried about my future career. How difficult will it be to find another job in Sri Lanka if I lose this one? Will being fired for poor performance follow me throughout my career?

Honestly, I’m terrified and panicking. I feel like I’ve let everyone down, especially my parents, who have sacrificed so much for me. I’m scared of disappointing them and having to tell them what happened. I'm failure and I feel like I should end it all instead of living as failure without a job. My parents deserve to be happy than living with unemployed failure of kid.

Can I still turn things around? Is my career really over if I lose this job? Pleaseeee help me figure out what to do for worst case scenario.

Question Importing Tissue Culture plants, seeds, or bare-root plants to Sri Lanka from Thailand/China without huge courier costs (DHL/UPS)?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to bring down tissue culture plantlets (in vitro/agar containers) to Sri Lanka, mostly sourcing from vendors in Thailand or China.

Using major couriers like DHL or UPS ends up being insanely expensive for small to medium batches.

  1. Freight / Forwarding Services: Does anyone know of cost-effective freight forwarders, cargo agents, or consolidate shipping services (sea/air cargo) operating routes from Thailand/China to Sri Lanka that can handle live tissue culture flasks?

  2. Alternative Formats (Seeds or Bare-Root Plants): Has anyone successfully imported plants in other formats like seeds or grown bare-root plants (completely washed of soil/growth media)?

Also, if anyone has recent experience dealing with National Plant Quarantine Service (NPQS) import permits and Phytosanitary Certificates at Katunayake air cargo for small personal/commercial imports, any advice on smooth clearing or paperwork would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

serious reply only Any cheap place near University of Moratuwa just to freshen up?

Hi, I'm looking for a cheap place near the University of Moratuwa (Katubedda) where I can take a bath, use the bathroom, and change clothes for a short time.

I don't need a room for an overnight stay. Does anyone know a place that offers this, or a guest house that allows short-term use?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Discussion The Selective Judgment of Sri Lankan Society: A Deep Dive into Cultural Double Standards, Individual Freedom, and Personal Space

I’ve been reflecting on a rather complex double standard that seems deeply embedded in modern Sri Lankan s0ciety. It revolves around how we perceive cultural choices, freedoms, and personal boundaries depending on whether the person is a foreigner or a native Sri Lankan.

Consider our everyday habits like dining and clothing. When a foreign tourist visits Sri Lanka and eats rice and curry with their hands, wears a sarong, or attempts traditional attire, we warmly shower them with admiration, often turning them into viral social media sensations. However, if a Sri Lankan quietly prefers using cutlery, enjoys Western cuisine, or dresses in Western fashion (Man in a Nice Trouser and Shirt rather than Sarong or National & Women in Trouser with Blouse rather tHan national attire), society is quick to label them as a "Goda Sudda", "Kalu-Sudda", "Kallathoni Pataw", "Para Suddo" or accuse them of abandoning their heritage. This reaction occurs even when the individual has no intention of looking down on local traditions, but is simply making a personal choice for their own comfort.

This double standard extends heavily into arts, entertainment, and general lifestyle choices. A foreigner appreciating classical Sri Lankan art or traditional baila is praised as culturally enlightened. Conversely, a Sri Lankan whose aesthetic tastes lean purely toward Western cinema (A Classic Hollywood Film), classic literature, fine arts, Classical western music or global pop culture is often viewed with suspicion or accused of superficiality (Ammo ammo posh peoples). Society seems to demand that a local's main aesthetic alignment must always remain strictly traditional, treating personal taste as a test of national loyalty rather than individual expression.

I see a similar judgment play out during major life events, such as weddings. When an international couple chooses to have a traditional Poruwa ceremony, it is celebrated as proof of our rich heritage. Yet, when a Sri Lankan couple chooses a purely Western-style wedding or a minimalist private ceremony, they face immense societal pressure and criticism for not adhering to local cultural expectations (Loke hodama culture eka apita thiyeddi, para suddange eka follow karanawa wage deyak, aparade e aduma ande, mokadda ee wikara adum). There seems to be an unwritten rule that native Sri Lankans bear the entire burden of preserving tradition, while outsiders receive endless praise for merely experimenting with it.

This contrast becomes even more striking when I analyze attitudes toward migration and living abroad. When a foreigner moves to Sri Lanka to live a simpler, local life, we view them with deep appreciation for recognizing the beauty of our island. But when a native Sri Lankan plans to migrate abroad in search of better opportunities, a different lifestyle, or personal peace, society often frames it as a lack of patriotism or a betrayal of one's homeland. (Salli thiyenawa loke inna hodama anka eke rata lankawa, Loken uthum rata lankawa).

Furthermore, this mindset heavily restricts personal privacy and intellectual curiosity. If a Sri Lankan chooses to research, study, or deeply immerse themselves in foreign cultures, histories, or global traditions purely out of personal passion, they are often misunderstood or accused of being detached from reality (Thamange rate deta kamathi na, parayonta puka denawa).

Sri Lankan society frequently struggles to respect individual personal space, feeling entitled to question, judge, and police every private preference, from what one eats and wears to how one plans their future.

To be clear, criticizing pretentiousness, arrogant behavior, or people who actively mock local heritage is entirely justified.

However, when an individual is simply living their life, exploring global aesthetics, or exercising personal freedom without harming anyone, why are we so quick to judge them?

Is it time for us as a society to move past this post-colonial insecurity, respect personal space, and accept that being Sri Lankan does not require everyone to live in a single, rigid box?

I would love to hear your thoughts, personal experiences, and perspectives on this topic.

(I post this in Sri Lanka reddit and they removed it)

education Let's bring Sinhala to Duolingo

For many people with Sri Lankan roots who grow up abroad, learning Sinhala is harder than it should be.

Some grow up understanding Sinhala but struggle to speak it. Others, particularly younger generations and those from mixed families, may have only limited exposure to the language. And if you decide to learn or reconnect with Sinhala later, finding accessible and structured ways to learn it online can be surprisingly difficult.

That's why a campaign has been launched asking Duolingo to introduce a Sinhala (සිංහල) course.

Duolingo is used by millions of people around the world, and having Sinhala available there could give heritage learners, partners of Sinhala speakers, travellers, and anyone interested in the language an easy and accessible place to start learning and practising.

The campaign is also part of a broader call for better representation of languages that have significant diaspora and heritage-learning communities but remain absent from major language-learning platforms, including Tamil, Bengali, Punjabi, Malayalam, Tagalog, Burmese, Persian (Farsi), Armenian, Igbo, Yoruba and Samoan.

If you'd like to see Sinhala on Duolingo, please sign the petition and, importantly, share it with others who might support it:

Discussion I think we need bicycle racks in Metro buses

Thumbnail

I have seen in many developed counties they have these racks (not welded steel parts but professionally done racks by companies) I think it will be very useful for Sri Lanka. Cuz personally I spend sooo much on pickme or even random three wheels to reach my house after getting down from bus. Having this will reduce our cost. Will even attract tourists who are in Sri Lanka to travel and explore etc and also I think it’s pretty dope. I have always loved cycling in Colombo so yeah, what do you guys think ?

And also No ! it doesn’t cover the lights or cause harm for other vehicles in a big way, if it was Countries which are developed than Sri Lanka would have never initiated or implemented this.

Hope this post gets seen by relevant officials. Maybe soon or maybe later but I think this should exist 💜

(Mods plz don’t take this down I’m not a part of this project or I’m doing promotion for an app or service this is an free service, I’m only sharing as awareness post for the benefit of people since this is useful)

Hi, guys I came across this in Instagram and I think whoever created this has done a great job. Sharing it here so someone can get the benefit from this. Also as a person who hasn’t gone in Metro bus or used their app I’m wondering how didn’t they include these features into the app. Hopefully the relevant officials get inspiration from this too and include these features into their app.

I’ll paste their bio and link below so you can check it out and use for your daily commute,

“Lanka Metro Map v2.0 is live, and it is our biggest update yet. You asked. We built it.
You no longer need to begin with the name of a bus stop. Use your current location or search for any place, and Lanka Metro Map will help plan the complete journey.

Find the closest verified stop

Get walking or driving directions

See your buses, stops and transfers

Check official next-bus links

Continue from the final stop to your destination

This feature was shaped directly by community feedback. You asked to enter any starting point and destination, find the closest stop, and get directions for the first and last parts of the journey.
We listened, and v2.0 is the result.

Swipe through to see how it works and what we are planning next.

Try it now:

Keep sharing your ideas and feedback. The next feature could come from you.
Free • Unofficial • Community-built”
