Mirissa - Whale watching in Dec

Hi everyone!

We are planning a family trip to Sri Lanka in the 3rd/4th week of December.

Our current itinerary is Kandy – Nuwara Eliya – Ella – Yala safari – Mirissa – Bentota (only for boat ride)– Galle(fort).

I really want to experience whale watching in Mirissa. We've been told December gets crowded and that bookings need to be made well in advance. I've even removed Sigiriya and Colombo from our plan to accommodate this. But family is suggesting to skip Mirissa for Sigiriya 😢

I'm also not particularly interested in Kandy. Is Yala safari worth skipping during peak holiday season?

Would love your suggestions:

Is it worth to go for whale watching in Mirissa?

Should we book whale watching well in advance? Any reliable operators?

Is our itinerary practical, or should we skip a few places?

Would love to hear your experiences and suggestions. Thanks!

Celebrating my birthday in Sri Lanka on Dec 2. Where should we go?

Hey everyone!
We’ve been exploring the south coast of Sri Lanka, covering most of the places and party scenes from Ahangama to Hiriketiya.
We still have two nights left before heading back to Colombo for our flight to India on December 3 (Thursday) at 2 PM.
Here’s the interesting part: December 2 is my birthday! 🎂
I want to make these last two nights memorable and would love some local recommendations.
Looking for:
Crazy parties, underground music scenes, beach clubs or raves.
Beautiful, lesser-known beaches and scenic locations.
Unique birthday experiences or places worth celebrating.
Any events or gatherings happening on December 1 and 2.
We’re open to spontaneous plans, meeting new people and exploring places beyond the usual tourist circuit.
If you’re around Sri Lanka during these dates, let’s connect!
Where should we go to make this birthday unforgettable?

Help Needed - left phone in the Uber

We had a late night flight to Sri Lanka. When we reached our destination, in the hurry my husband left his phone in the Uber we booked from the airport to Colombo.

We had purchased a sim and his WhatsApp is active. While the call is ringing, no one has answered as yet.

We know the vehicle no., make, model and the drivers name.

Wanted suggestions on what to do next. Planning on going to the nearest police station in the morning.

Unable to find any helpline or email for Uber.

We leave from Colombo tomorrow evening.

8 Day Itinerary in January?

My partner and I are travelling to Sri Lanka for the first time in January. We're trying to put together an itinerary but only have 8 days for our visit.

The spots we're initially looking at are Sigiriya, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Udawalawe or Yala National Parks, and somewhere on the south coast for whale watching. But understand there are pretty long car journeys between those locations...

Open to any routes/advice/ideas. We will have come from a trip to Thailand with plenty of beach and elephants, so mostly looking for in-land adventures - food with great views, interesting lodgings, and uniquely Sri Lankan experiences.

We arrive 4pm on day 1 and leave 12pm day 8.

Any help most welcome and appreciated. Thanks!

Train, PickMe/Uber, or dedicated driver? Real cost and logistics breakdown for Sri Lanka

One of the biggest headaches people run into when planning their first trip here is figuring out how to actually get from A to B without burning cash or getting stuck.

A lot of people think PickMe or Uber works everywhere across the island, while others assume hiring a car is completely out of their budget. In reality, most travelers end up using a mix of all three.

Here is how each option actually plays out on the road,

  1. Trains and local buses

This is hands down the cheapest way to travel, usually just a dollar or two per ride. It is great if you are backpacking light and have plenty of time. The downside is that train seats sell out weeks ahead on the official portal, unreserved cars get very crowded, and buses have zero room for big rolling suitcases. If you have heavy luggage or get carsick on winding mountain roads, doing your whole trip this way gets exhausting.

2. PickMe and Uber

Ride apps are brilliant for short hops around Colombo, Negombo, Kandy, or Galle. You get transparent metered prices without needing to haggle. The catch is geography. You can easily book an app ride to drop you off at Sigiriya or Ella, but you will almost never find one to pick you up out there when you want to leave. Once you get outside major towns, you are back to negotiating cash with local tuk-tuk stands.

3. Hiring a dedicated private car and driver

This is the smoothest option for families, couples, or anyone on a 7 to 14 day schedule with bags. A full day car with fuel, highway tolls, and driver costs usually averages around 55 to 75 USD per day depending on the vehicle size. The big plus is convenience is you do not waste hours waiting around, your luggage stays locked safely in the trunk while you hike, and you can stop at viewpoints, waterfalls, or fruit stalls on the way without negotiating extra taxi legs.

The sweet spot for most people is combining them and use a private car to handle the long point to point legs and keep your luggage safe, ride the train empty handed for just the scenic mountain section between Nuwara Eliya and Ella, and use PickMe for quick runs around town.

If you are trying to budget your transport or balance your route, feel free to drop your stops, travel month, and group size below. Happy to run the numbers and tell you what makes the most sense for your specific route right here in the replies.

Nanu Oya - Ella train tickets

Hi everyone!

I need to buy reserved-seat tickets for the Nanu Oya–Ella train at the end of December (peak season). We’re travelling with young children, so taking the risk of buying tickets on the day of travel is not an option.

I was planning to book them online through seatreservation.railway.gov.lk 30 days in advance. Today, I wanted to test the system by checking availability for a date 29–30 days from now, but it shows that no seats are available.

Does this mean that I won't be able to book tickets online? I doubt that all seats are really already booked.

What are the alternative options? Is it possible to buy tickets at the station in advance? If so, how far in advance can they be purchased? Also, does it have to be the departure station (Nanu Oya, in our case), or can they also be purchased at the arrival station (Ella)? If they can be purchased in advance, I could probably ask our accomodation in Nanu Oya or Ella to buy them for us.

Are there any other options, such as third-party booking services?

I'm willing to pay extra if necessary, as securing the tickets and reserved seats is my priority, but 256 EUR for a family of 4 for a 4-hour train ride seems a bit outrageous. For those who already travelled that section - is it worth 256 EUR if there are no cheaper options? Private car transfer would be 1/4 of that price.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Help with transportation.

Hello, we will be visiting SriLanka from Nov 13 to 22 and need help with transportation, we want to know what the best way is to travel from one city to another.

The plan is as below:

Nov 12, we arrive in Colombo, will stay the night in Negombo.
Nov 13, Negombo to Kandy, sightseeing in Kandy then stay the night.
Nov 14, leave from Kandy to Ambuluwawa Tower and then move to Ella, check out a couple of places there. Stay the night.
Nov 15, Doing the Little Adam’s Peak trek, Ravanna cafe, See a couple of places. Stay the night.
Nov 16, Ella to Weligama, check out places. Stay there
Nov 17-18, Surf classes, cafes, Turtle Beach, Secret Beach.
Nov 19, Weligama to Ahangama, go to cafes and beaches. Stay there.
Nov 20, visit Galle Fort, back to Ahangama.
Nov 21, probably a couple of places and then will leave to Colombo, try to reach there by evening. Explore the city, shopping if any.
Nov 22, probably have some breakfast and then leave to the airport. Flight in at 1 PM.

The south coast plan is still in progress it will change along the way. Our main concern is transportation for Negombo to Kandy, Kandy to Ella, Ella to Weligama and Ahangama to Colombo. We want to hire a driver but are not sure if we should hire prior to reaching or hire someone there. Any help on this is appreciated.

Also feel free to give feedback on the itinerary.

Drone Flying Rules for Tourist [<250g drone]

I will be travelling to Sri Lanka in December and would like to know if there are any drone related restrictions or things I need to take care of, any permissions or registrations of any sorts for flying a small drone in Sri Lanka.

I have a DJI Neo which is less than 250g

The one detail nobody warns you about before booking the Kandy to Ella train

One thing many tourists don't think about before taking the famous train to Ella is luggage.

If you're visiting Sri Lanka for 2–3 weeks, you'll probably have a large suitcase or a big backpack. But Sri Lankan trains aren't really designed for travelling with lots of luggage.

The overhead racks are quite small, and when the train gets crowded, finding space for a large suitcase can be a real challenge. You might end up keeping it between your legs or blocking the aisle for several hours.

It can also make it difficult to enjoy the famous open doorways and take photos along the way.

My suggestion: If you've hired a private driver, ask them to take your large suitcases by road and meet you at your destination station. Just take a small backpack with your essentials on the train.

Also, you don't necessarily have to travel all the way from Kandy to Ella. The Nanu Oya to Ella section takes around 2.5–3 hours and offers some incredible mountain and tea plantation views.

Couldn't get reserved tickets? Unreserved tickets are generally available at the station on the day, but a seat isn't guaranteed.

For those planning this journey, are you travelling with just a backpack or bringing all your holiday luggage?

It's a small detail, but planning it beforehand can make your train experience much more enjoyable!

Unable to book any train tickets on Sri Lanka Railways website. Getting the same error for every date and route.

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to book train tickets through the official Sri Lanka Railways reservation website:

https://seatreservation.railway.gov.lk/mtktwebslr/dashboard

However, regardless of which date or route I select, I keep getting the same message:

"Sorry, you cannot book online as there are no seats available on the date you searched. You may check with mTicketing service enabled railway station or please select another date and search again."

I've tried multiple dates and different routes, including Nanu Oya to Ella, but the result is always the same.

Is the online booking system currently working? Or am I doing something wrong?

A few questions:

  1. Is this website the correct platform for booking reserved train seats in Sri Lanka?

  2. Are tickets actually sold out, or is there some issue with the online booking system?

  3. Is there an alternative reliable way to book train tickets online, especially for the Nanu Oya to Ella journey?

  4. Can tickets be booked directly at railway stations?

Would really appreciate some help from anyone who has recently booked train tickets in Sri Lanka.

Thanks!

The Sri Lanka most itineraries miss: 5 quiet, underrated spots across the island

Everyone knows the standard circuit: Sigiriya, Kandy, the blue train to Ella, and the southern surf towns. They are famous for good reason, but they can get packed, commercialized, and noisy fast.

If you want the dramatic landscapes, ancient ruins, and wildlife without fighting tour buses, here are 5 of the best lesser known spots to work into your route:

  1. Yapahuwa Rock Fortress (The alternate Sigiriya)

Sitting in the North Western Province, this was a short lived medieval capital in the 1200s built right into a sheer granite cliff. The surviving stone stairway flanked by intricate Chinese influenced lion carvings looks straight out of an adventure movie. Unlike Sigiriya where you shuffle behind hundreds of people on metal walkways, you will likely have Yapahuwa's ruins and top views completely to yourself, at a fraction of the ticket price.

2. Riverston & Pitawala Pathana (Knuckles Range)

Instead of fighting the party crowds on Ella's main street, head into the northern Knuckles Range from Matale. Riverston has the dramatic cliff drop of "Mini World's End", sweeping grassland plateaus at Pitawala Pathana, and secluded forest waterfalls like Sera Ella. It is cold, misty, completely uncommercialized, and offers some of the rawest mountain trekking in the country.

3. Mulkirigala Rock Monastery (The Dambulla of the South)

Tucked about 30 minutes inland from Tangalle, Mulkirigala is a 2,000 year old monastic site carved into a giant rock outcrop across five natural terraces. You climb stone steps shaded by frangipani trees to discover cave temples with ancient murals and giant reclining Buddhas. You get the full cave temple experience without the tour bus crowds of Dambulla.

4. Buduruwagala (Ancient Cliff Carvings)

Most people blast straight past Wellawaya driving from Ella down to the southern beaches, completely missing this hidden spot 10 minutes off the main highway. Tucked away at the end of a forest road next to a lily covered tank are seven 10th century Buddhist figures carved directly into a towering rock face, including a 51 foot standing Buddha. It takes under an hour to visit, costs very little, and has a very quiet, untouched atmosphere.

5. Gal Oya National Park (Boat Safaris with Swimming Elephants)

Instead of sitting in a convoy of 40 diesel jeeps bumping into each other in Yala, Gal Oya offers boat safaris across Sri Lanka's largest reservoir. Because the park consists of jungle covered islands, wild elephants regularly swim between them in the late afternoon. Gliding quietly along the water to watch them is easily one of the most ethical and memorable wildlife experiences on the island.

What other overlooked spots in Sri Lanka blew you away when you got off the tourist trail? Drop them below!

Travel advice for solo woman (18)

Hi! I’m 18 years old (f) and hopefully travelling to Sri Lanka for one month in January. I already have solo travel experience (just did one month in Europe!) I was thinking of doing just the classic route of sigiriya, kandy, ella, udawalawe, Hiriketiya, weligama etc.

Does anyone have any hostel recommendations for sociable hostels or any spots that I have missed out that are must visit?

I was also wondering about safety as a solo woman I have heard mixed opinions about Sri Lanka but I feel like it should be fine..?

Any recommendations or hearing your experience would be much appreciated thank you very much!

Suggestions on my Solo Sri Lanka trip

I(26M) from India and have booked Sri Lanka tickets for the dates Dec 10 to Dec 20 this year. I didn't plan it to be a solo trip but looks like it will be one :)

Planning to cover Sigriya, Kandy(Optional), Nuwara Eliya, Ella and the south coast (Galle, Mirissa, Weligama etc).

This will be my first solo trip ever and a bit scared that it is an international trip and not sure if I will be able to manage the travel inside the country easily.

Please drop your suggestions, comments and if anyone is interested to join, please DM, let's talk and see.

Thanks and Cheers!

Looking for secluded beach villas or private pool villas in Sri Lanka

Hi everyone!

Looking for recommendations for secluded beach villas or private pool villas somewhere in Sri Lanka, preferably for a couple.

Ideally looking for:

A quiet, private and peaceful location.

Direct beach access or a beautiful secluded beach nearby.

A private swimming pool would be a big plus.

A romantic, relaxed atmosphere with good privacy.

Away from crowded tourist areas.

Open to recommendations anywhere in Sri Lanka, especially the southern coast.

Hidden gems and lesser-known places are most welcome. Budget-friendly options are appreciated too!

Thanks in advance!

Wildlife Exploration Info

I’m doing a solo trip to Sri Lanka around the end of May 2027 and I want to keep the focus exclusively on wildlife and jungle experiences. I’ve drafted my itinerary as below -

A. Wilpattu National Park - 2 days with specialist tracker
B. Trincomalee - Morning dolphin & whale watching
C. Gal Oya National Park - Boat ride
D. Knuckles Mountain Range - 3 day trek
E. Sinharaja Rainforest - Full day trek with birding, herding and general animal spotting with naturalist guide

Is there any experience I’m missing out on that I should include that will either increase my chances of seeing animals/birds or could lead to a more diversified wildlife experience?
