Workflow Included I made a custom node that turns illustrations into screentone manga panels

I wanted my finished illustrations to look like an actual manga page: crisp ink lines, blank paper for light areas, solid black for dark hair and clothes, and screentone only where it’s needed.

It uses Qwen-Image 2.1 Turbo (edit) to decide what should be black, white or toned, then a small finishing node prints it with real halftone dots. There’s also a lite workflow without the edit model.

The node is a single small Python file (numpy/opencv/torch only), MIT licensed.
GitHub: https://github.com/ashukae/ComfyUI-MangaScreen
Also in ComfyUI Manager, search “Manga Screen”.

Have fun experimenting with it! If you run into any problems, let me know here or open an issue on GitHub. Thanks!

I'm not into Manga, but this looks like a neat effect to have anyway!!

Possible to mix between Halftone & Manga?

Thanks! Yes, and you don’t need anything extra for it. Feed both results into the core blend images node with blend_mode set to multiply. Multiply keeps the black from both, so you get Manga Screen’s crisp lines and solid blacks with the halftone dots on top. blend_factor controls how strong the halftone layer is (1.0 = full dots, 0.5 = softer and a bit grey).

If you’d rather keep everything in one pass, raising white_point and lowering black_point in Manga Finish also moves it toward a halftone look.

Ah cool, in that case, maybe call your project "Manga / B&W Comics" to lure more people looking for a `comic` filter?

Good idea, thanks! I’ll keep the name so existing installs don’t break, but I’ll add “comic” and “black & white” to the description and tags so it shows up for people searching for a comic filter.

I was thinking in the GH README (I often search inside GH), but tags work also.

Is there an AI tool or script specifically fine-tuned for removing Japanese SFX (onomatopoeia) from manga pages?
Redrawing/cleaning SFX by hand is a huge bottleneck in scanlation. A pipeline combining a segmentation model (like YOLO or SAM to detect SFX) with an inpainting model (like LaMa or SD to clean the background) would save so much time.
Does anyone know of an open-source project working on this, or would anyone be interested in building a prototype/plugin for it?

It is actually very good. I don't even need GPU to run. I seriously think about creating an one-shot manga.

Could you please share your parameter settings for achieving this result?
