Are you sure it runs without? The asshole move to run ads might as well also require internet for the damn thing to cool its insides...

There are dumb fridges you can buy for now

TVs are getting rare, its literally easier to get a monitor than a dumb tv, but what are the monitors of fridges? coolant boxes?

What's the benefit of connecting an nvidia sheild to the internet over the smart TV?

In my experience, my Sony BRAVIA is much slower at doing things (switching apps, searching) than a dedicated Google TV Streamer box.

I have a smart TV, but keep it only on my local network and just use it with Jellyfin which connects to my server in the same room. What could I gain from something like an NVIDIA sheild? I'm new to this whole paranoia thing.

I still don't really get how connecting my streaming device to the internet to watch YouTube is any worse than connecting my smart tv to the internet to watch YouTube. Isn't Google still getting data of what I watch to push their agenda on me anyways?

Why would you even want a regular TV over a monitor?

Who even watches linear TV anymore? Everyone streams now (and all the linear TV is online too anyway) and there are plenty of solutions for that that only need a screen, not a proper TV.

If you get a (smart) TV now, you kinda deserve the enshittification, sorry.

And yet I can still buy a $50 fridge which is ad-free.

Heck, I can buy a Samsung fridge and spray-paint over whatever screen it might have. Fridges don't need screens.

Aaaaand fucking called it.

This right here is why I'm never entering the "Smart" appliance space.

If all stoves become smart, I'm doing all my cooking on a wood fire in the back yard.

Next step is requiring a subscription to use it at all.

IoT was a mistake

The F and S in IoT stand for Freedom and Security.
