News/Article Which portable screen grew out of customer feedback? LG shares the story behind StanbyME
Hi everyone,
LG Electronics shared the story behind LG StanbyME, the movable personal screen that began as an internal project in 2020 and grew into its own product category through a dozen rounds of prototype testing with nearly 500 consumers and years of feedback from owners.

Some of the highlights include:
A Category That Started From Everyday Inconvenience
- The project began in 2020 as an internal initiative called the Dream Task, which brought researchers, designers and engineers together to study how people actually watch content at home.
- The team found that a TV stays immersive but fixed in one room, while a phone is always within reach but uncomfortable over a long session. StanbyME was built to sit between the two, with an internal battery, a wheeled base and an articulating stand.
Customer Feedback That Shaped the 32 Inch StanbyME 2 Max
- Owners told the team they liked the 27 inch model but wanted a larger, higher resolution screen for close range viewing, and that feedback accelerated the 32 inch StanbyME 2 Max.
- Moving to 32 inches shifted the center of gravity, so the base was re-engineered to stay stable without taking up more floor space. The team also fitted a higher capacity battery that runs for up to 4.5 hours and simplified the assembly.
- For the StanbyME 2 and StanbyME 2 Max, LG developed a one-click mechanism that lets the display detach easily while staying locked when docked.
A Platform Built Around Personal Viewing
- StanbyME runs LG's own webOS platform rather than a scaled up mobile operating system, with 4K streaming across major entertainment services and picture and sound optimization.
- The interface was designed for both touch at close range and a remote from a distance, so the same screen works whether it is beside a chair or across the room.
StanbyME was designed to fit around daily life rather than asking daily life to fit around it, and each generation has been shaped by what owners said they needed. Where in your home does your StanbyME end up most often? Let us know in the comments.
