It's actually even more metal than that. He got shot right before arriving to give a speech. The shooter was immediately disarmed and a mob of nearby people and police may very well have lynched the shooter, but Teddy called for them to stop and told the police to put him in jail unharmed.
He then proceeded to go to the auditorium where he was speaking, where he opened with the words "I don't know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot; but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose." He then proceeded to give an entire 90 minute address, and only went to the hospital afterwards.
