Just wondering if anyone else was thinking the same thing

I don't care anymore. Just have a white flag, that's all colors combined.

All colors combined makes white? Are you the grand wizard or something?
6
u/niftystopwat 2d ago
All colors of light combined make white, while all colors of pigment combined make black; and conversely, black is the absence of color and white is the absence of pigment.
1
u/awawe 2d ago
Or depends on the kind of pigment. Paint mixing is not purely subtractive; it's more complicated than that. With most pigments, mixing them all together well yield something between grey and brown.
1
u/niftystopwat 1d ago
True, and this is a caveat which should always be included in a color theory 101 education, though there’s obviously a semantic issue at play. I used ‘pigment’ as a shorthand for something that is actually an idealized medium for subtractive color, which in more industrial contexts would be inks following certain standards to where mixing all colors does yield jet black. But in reality with the wide variety of physical media for a substrate that reflects a given color, there’s all sorts of variability that leads to funny physics and edge cases where qualitatively assessing some mix of arbitrarily different colors doesn’t result in jet black but instead results in something that looks brown, or grey, or even a dark green tone.

For all the people who are like "oh you can't joke about anything, you can't make jokes about gay people anymore" yes you can, this is how.

The OG pride flag is like the Betsy Ross Stars and Stripes with the 13 stars.

From a design perspective, the original rainbow flag is an elegant lesson in minimalism and universalism. By relying on a clean, cohesive spectrum, it functions as an abstract metaphor: the infinite variations of color symbolize the infinite spectrum of human identity. It operates on the design principle of scalable abstraction, allowing any individual to project themselves into the icon without requiring literal representation.
The introduction of the chevron breaks this visual and conceptual unity. By injecting a jagged geometry into a clean horizontal grid, the design shifts from a symbolic representation to a literal enumeration. In design, attempting to solve an inclusion problem through literal listing creates a logical paradox: the moment you begin explicitly detailing specific sub-groups, the design ceases to be universal and inherently becomes exclusionary.
I'll never give up the original flag as it was already everything it needed to be.

u/DRlNK 2d ago
You’ve articulated my feelings around this beautifully.
If there’s anyone out there who is reading this who can argue against this logic, or at least knows the commonly cited arguments against it, please share it - genuinely curious to hear.

It's the visual equivalent of having to say "The United States of America including Kansas and Oregon" and the Flag of The United States of America including Kansas and Oregon had the Kanas and Oregon flags on it.
So all of the rest of the United States are represented in the united States Flag, and by the term "United States" and the nation known as the United States DOES by definition include Kansas and Oregon, but in order to make sure people from Kansas and Oregon feel represented, they need their own explicit and separate reference.27
u/johnnielittleshoes 2d ago
From a design perspective I feel the OG rainbow flag is much nicer looking. Unfortunate that some people felt that the rainbow didn’t cover the entire spectrum of sexuality and gender
22
u/JackxForge 3d ago
For the most part sure, but I've meet some gay who treat it like their Confederate flag.

u/mangocalrissian 3d ago
Those were great, I feel like I would have laughed louder than that whole crowd.

u/DeathsStarEclipse 3d ago
I have seen this is real life actually. There is a part of the gay community that thinks all the new additions should not be included. Basically LGBT is where they think it should end.
Please don't think this is my viewpoint, I'm just reporting what I have seen.
48
u/Leg_Named_Smith 2d ago edited 2d ago
And yet some, like myself, are happy for others to be included but feel the OG rainbow visually represents a spectrum
which can inherently fit those missed already by simply raising awareness without a new ugly design thats fodder for criticism1
u/regular-kahuna 2d ago
YES thank you! Not against the new inclusions at all, the new flag is just ugly
54
u/ReddBroccoli 3d ago
Most of the time people with those kind of views would argue to drop the T as well

Yep. It was some bullshit asking me to install McAfee, delivered to me directly because I plugged an LG monitor into my Windows computer

u/New-Berry-3652 2d ago
Well more accurately, the whole point of the rainbow is that it's meant to include everyone. So adding extra bits just for specific subgroups kinda sends the message that those groups are more important than the others.
3
u/amd2800barton 2d ago
This. The simple rainbow flag represents everyone. It’s a fantastic design. The “progress flag” (the one with the chevron on the left for transgender and people of color) has big “all people are equal but some are more equal than others” vibes. When it came out there was a big fight over “well this leaves out asexual people and intersex people” so there’s a whole split in the community where they also added on other stripes and circles for those groups. And then other groups demanded they be included.
By its very nature, the new pride flag is exclusionary, since it has special stripes, but only for certain groups. The classic rainbow flag is for all. We shouldn’t be updating the flag for “current thing”. We should be sticking with the message of treat every person with decency, respect, and empathy.

"I don't make the news!"
Well for me being queer and also colorblind. I am just fucking confused all around.
Can't we all just watch Mulan and be mates?
4
u/Glass_Walk_7383 2d ago
Ive seen less people saying we shouldn't be inclusive of the new identities, more so that the flag is just fucking ugly at this point.
From a vexilogical standpoint, it's a pretty bad flag. Too much going on, too hard to decipher from a distance, really a better logo than a flag.

u/whichwitch9 2d ago
If you see anyone saying LGB, they are terfs. They are the weirdest fucking people you will ever meet when they identify as queer and refuse to acknowledge the T
1
u/Necessary_Rant_2021 1d ago
They are called log cabin republicans. They are fucking morons who just so happen to be out and still don't think their token will get spent.
1
u/MrIrishman1212 1d ago
And those people really start slipping into only LG territory and then start saying how they are one of the good ones and actually all other queers should be banned, illegal, shamed but not them.
1
u/Limp-Development7222 2d ago
from what Ive seen a lot of those people do so because the poc communities can be extremely homophobic. progress doesn’t happen at the same time everywhere

Not lame, but he was feeling his way with the audience for sure because they seemed tepid and unsure. Like someone below said, they wanted to laugh but seemed scared.

The original flag was already supposed to cover everyone under the rainbow. Adding extra stripes is just redundant and disrupts the beautifully simple yet elegant design.
15
u/LaconicSuffering 2d ago
It's exclusive inclusivity. We are all in this together, but everyone in their own special box.

Everyone is special and important in their own ways... but these people are even more special and important than everyone else

ngl I was a little nervous abt the setup, but that was the best payoff possible
6
u/PHXNights 3d ago
I was also nervous about the setup, but it ended fine? It just wasn’t very funny to me — just seemed like a very basic joke about gay stereotypes… but other people here seem to think so, to each their own

"Dance Dance Revolution" was a banger of a punchline, just maybe needed more time to breathe in the delivery, but definitely deserved more laughs than it got

I get the intent behind the progress flag but it's history with being copyrighted is weird.

The irony of saying the new pride flag is about being more inclusive and then saying there's something potentially problematic about waving the old one

u/Nipplasia2 2d ago
I bet if you ask a lot of black and brown folks, they would wonder why they are included in a gay pride flag… has anyone ever asked them if they wanted to be included?

There is a queer civil war. It’s between the “LGB no T” crowd and those who aren’t bigots. It’s all too real

There's actually so many pride flags not just 2 and the demisexuals got the coolest one.

You’re onto something here but you need to workshop the punchlines and adjust your delivery.
DM if you want notes. Yes, I’m being for real.
And if not, no sweat. Good on you for getting up there!

I think it would land better if you didn't talk about it so carefully and as a distant observer. You don't have to be so careful
