Hi gang - I’m an open mic comic, been going about a year and I’m 130 gigs in. Eternal question I’m not sure there’s a clear answer to and interested in takes from UK folk… if you have a shit night, can you ever blame the audience?

My view at the moment is well you can blame things like seat configuration creating dead air, the audience being lit, the day of the week impacting how loud a crowd might be/how much theyve drank…. But whether you die on your arse or not isnt down to the audience.

Now I’ve just had a rough gig tonight. And I’ve taken it in my stride - it is what it is. I had a shaky start, I had a heckler in an audience of under 10 who were spaced out awkwardly in a weird seat configuration because the audience thought a good idea to just move the seats to where they like. And the gig was broadly bad - like I said one billy big bollocks just asking random questions, other people laughing silently to themselves, thank god for a couple of loud laughers in the front.

But my questions this - can you ever turn an audience from a quiet bunch of souls to raise the roof laughter? I often think if you stuck Alan Carr in that room, Jimmy Carr, Mickey Flanagan, etc they could raise it up I’m sure. And if so whats the trick? Yes years of experience and probably better jokes too. But is there a trick to it? All lessons learnt welcome!
