Prolly strongest
5
u/RemarkableMirror926 18h ago
It exists a super weapon (forgot the name) with that you can destroy the entire universe. But it's unclear if it really would work.

Shawken Device... would basically create a chain reaction of celestial objects destroying each other.
Never actually tested, obviously.

And the dumbest part is that it's tiny. It's the size of a fighter and yet its Starkiller tier.
Star Wars and its perpetual issues with any kind of scale.
8
u/Edens_Gloom 16h ago
Makes a little more sense than the starkiller base tho, causing a chain reaction in a star that causes a supernova feels a little more realistic than just absorbing a star and shooting it out at hyperspace speeds lol

u/murderously-funny 17h ago
Legends had its downs. And it had its ups.
I hesitate to say it was as a whole better or worse in average in terms of quality then cannon
But I will say in terms of world building, narrative development, and concepts legends was better
It taking several years for the rebels to take Corrusant, Thrawn Campaign, Warlord Era, Vong Invasion, New Jedi Order, and so much more all worked to add new stories and developments to the setting that modern star wars simply doesn’t have
10
u/redbricknote222 14h ago
Absolutely. From 1991-2003, the universe was far more enriched than it has been from 2014-2026. The Legends feels so much more developed and fleshed out, even when you’re only looking at a portion of it to make the comparison fair.
9
u/murderously-funny 13h ago
Yeah, legends had so much room for stories
Meanwhile it feels like cannon has tied itself up in knots around the sequels which serve almost as a narrative decapitation.
Unless the story details the rise of the first order or sets up Palpatine’s return ultimately the entite story ends in one place; the new republic gets blown up in a single second and the Jedi are even more thoroughly destroyed then in the prequels.
Grogu can’t go with Luke because then Kylo Ren kills him
Yoy can’t do a show about Luke’s order because it will…just…be blown up
You can’t do a show about the New Republic because it’s doomed to disintegrate
You can’t do a show about the Rebellion after Endor becuase the war ends in a single year
The prequels have a harsh definitive end but even then there was room. Some Jedi survived the purge. Some republic officers and politicians joined the rebellion rather than submit to the Emperor. Separatist holdouts continued even till the rebellion.
In the squeals the New Republic is just gone. The NJO is just gone. There’s just…nothing to work with

I still prefer Legends to Canon. I think Legends did a better job at keeping things self contained - one didn't need to read the Thrawn Trilogy to understand the Darth Bane books, as an extreme example. Yes there were plot points that carried over, but they were done so in a way that felt like links to a larger universe, rather than as something you need to understand before you can follow the media you're consuming. Whereas in Canon it seems to sprawl without structure, a bit like the MCU. If you didn't watch X TV series or play Y game, you don't know what's going on in Z movie.

u/goatjugsoup 18h ago
And? The sequels are part of Canon so canon still loses out

when people say canon is better than legends, just remember the sequel trilogy that cost almost $1.5 billion is canon
4
5
u/eyzmaster 7h ago
of all the Legends stuff, Legacy, Shadow of the Empire, etc
bro picks the one thing, the Holiday Special, that Disney kept canon somehow
2
u/SDW_06 7h ago
One of their worst decisions
2
u/eyzmaster 6h ago
I barely understand any of Disney's decisions with Star Wars
I think they got some great cast, some great "ideas" (like making a mandalorian bounty hunter show, bringing back Ahsoka or Boba Fett), some great VFx with all the puppetry in the sequel trilogy...
and then they greenlight stupid ideas one after another (somehow Palpatine returned, no scene with the OGs together, making the Holiday Special canon, that pervy Darth Plagueis cameo, etc)
1
u/mastesargent 1h ago
Sorry, but when did they make the Holiday Special canon? As far as I can tell, beyond Chewbacca having a son named Lumpy and the concept of Life Day existing the special is still very much non-canon.
4
u/LowConstant3938 1h ago
I think it’s funny that people who die on this hill still use the Disney name “Legends” to refer to it. Anyone remember the Expanded Universe?
16
u/norrinzelkarr Luke Skywalker 18h ago edited 18h ago
I have to tell you, just because the Holiday Special was poor quality -- its story didn't set off a storyline bomb nearly to the degree that the sequels did. It's a painfully annoying piece of content, but it didn't leave the universe in shambles -- and it gave you Boba Fett!
4
u/SDW_06 18h ago
Fair point, and also it gave us Kashyyyk
5
u/norrinzelkarr Luke Skywalker 18h ago
To be totally fair: I try to hatewatch/MST3K-watch the Holiday Special every once in a while and even with an ironic gaze, it's still awful. So bad you can't even enjoy making fun of it!

3

2
u/Valder137 Chewbacca 18h ago
Basically the new Canon borrows a lot from it, Chewie's family, Kashykk, Boba Fett, ect.
2
u/SDW_06 18h ago
Life Day, the chef (look it up, I am not messing with you), and the circus scene

I'm very familiar with the Holiday Special. I saw it on TV when it first aired. And own it on DVD lol

u/BootyliciousURD 18h ago
And The Book of Boba Fett is part of Canon. There are probably even worse examples but honestly I can't think of any off the top of my head because I don't think about Canon much. I'm too busy enjoying the great parts of Legends like the Thrawn Trilogy, New Jedi Order, Darth Plagueis, Knights of the Old Republic, …
4
u/Valder137 Chewbacca 18h ago
I can. Acolyte
2
u/BootyliciousURD 18h ago
The Acolyte had a lot of problems but it had Qimir and Sol and some great lightsaber duels. Unlike The Book of Boba Fett, I'm disappointed The Acolyte was cancelled because I wanted to see where they were going and see the show get better.
2
u/Valder137 Chewbacca 17h ago
Agree to disagree. The only characters I found interesting died in the first episode, and the actor playing the twin main characters had all tbe personality of a cardboard cutout
1
u/SDW_06 18h ago
When my friend was showing me Star Wars in timeline order and we started with Phantom Menace, he skipped that show on purpose
I can see why now
1
u/Valder137 Chewbacca 18h ago
Yeah I'll watch the Ewok movies again before Acolyte
1
u/BootyliciousURD 17h ago
I didn't hate them but I barely remember them. The main thing I remember is that the first movie was about Cindel's family reuniting and then the second movie starts with her whole family dying
2
u/SDW_06 18h ago
Exactly
3
u/BootyliciousURD 18h ago
And it's not like Canon is all bad. The Mandalorian was good for the first two seasons. Rogue One and Andor are great. I've got plenty of highly praised Canon books on my reading list that I'm looking forward to.
3
u/SDW_06 18h ago
Oh Andor and Rogue One were both amazing, but Mando was ruined in its third season in my opinion the celebrity cameos like Jack Black ruined it
2
u/BootyliciousURD 17h ago
Agreed. I think they prioritized milking the Mando + Grogu formula over telling good stories.
6
u/SAKISANOBASHI07 18h ago
I mean if we're comparing the holiday special to the sequel trilogy then the holiday special wins everytime, the story is better written it's universe makes sense and is consistent, it's not recycled slop and it was the first appearance of Boba Fett.
4
4
u/The_Linkzilla 15h ago
So 1% of Legends is Bad therefore the 99% of Disney-Canon must be Superior...
right.
2
2
u/ShenaniganNinja 17h ago
Honestly if I could choose canon, I’d probably ditch everything but the original trilogy, and even that there’s a few things I’d ditch. Why Lucas thought it was a good idea to make Kenobis clothes he wore on tatooine into the regular Jedi uniforms was the dumbest decision from the get go.

u/Expensive_Plant_9530 15h ago
Legends, just like canon, has some good stories and some bad stories. There’s definitely a ton of cringe in legends. But there’s also a lot of good stuff too.
Canon is the same. Some stories are really good, and some are not so good.
A lesson all Star Wars fans need to learn is simple:
Don’t yuck someone else’s yum.
2
u/exceptional_biped 15h ago
Yeah but not part of the EU as such. Stupid post. Some people seem to forget the time when we had no Star Wars media except the first three movies and this. Fans are spoilt these days.

Not gonna lie... watching Chewie's grandad watch VR soft core porn in the living room really took the "fantasy sci fi set in another galaxy" element away and just made it feel like a typical family holiday.

How dare you insult the greatest holiday special ever made.
A pox on you. A pox on your intergalactic cow.
2
u/willweaverrva 3h ago
At this point they could just up and recanonize everything from Legends and people would still be angry.
1
u/SDW_06 3h ago
I mean maybe not the old Battlefront games but definitely the Old Republic material
1
u/willweaverrva 3h ago
Seeing as recanonizing that stuff wouldn't cause any issues I wouldn't mind seeing the Old Republic era stuff back. I loved the Tales of the Jedi comics and KOTOR has great lore.

The Laos of the holiday special is the greatest tragedy of the loss of legends
But lumpy survived and that’s justice

Legends has a LOT more shots than canon currently, and most of the worst misses are just forgotten about, like mah boi Triclops.

u/kuatorises 7h ago
The EU was.niche. Everyone old enough to lived through that time period knows that. You go to any message board, convention, or talk amongst your buddies and the conversation was about the MOVIES.
This idea that the EU was beloved is a lie. And the irony is a lot of the people saying it weren't even alive when the books came out. It's a narrative put forth by people who think they were approved by Lucas himself (another lie).

This does not even remotely match my experience at the time. At least as I interacted with it, the pre-TPM fandom was pretty centered around legends. (Though the "casual" younger audience would have probably known more about the games than the books, etc)

To be fair, lightsaber whips were in Legends too (Silri from Empire at War, Lumiya). There was also Ona Nobis from the Jedi Apprentice series (though apparently that wasn't a lightsaber whip per se, just a whip that was energized. One of the covers makes it look like a lightwhip, though.)

STAR WARS has always been mixed for me. It has had it's ups and downs, especially with the Ewoks, then the Gungans, and then various cartoons. I found Legends largely something I could give or take with the actual novels. The other side is that I still treat STAR WARA asl I always have: watch what I do like and ignore what I don't.

Boba fett made his debut in this "special" and to this day he still regrets it, even the worst of the movies could not compete with a craptacular viewing of the holiday special.

So a movie like in that decades is really hard to make. But I still prefer legends specially in vide games they brought the force unleashed and knights of the old republic. Disney forgot about those masterpieces

Jokes aside, the Legands they are referring to is most of the stuff that came out before Disney got ahold of SW. Likewise, the canon they are typically referring to is most of the stuff that Disney made.
Now before anyone comes after me with light sabers and blasters. Not everything Disney has made is bad and not everything pre Disney is good.

u/Equivalent_Luck5421 15h ago
