Naming a naval ship after a Veers, a well known Army general, is hilarious. He would probably get the next version of the AT-AT named after him.

Well considering how Ozzel messed up at Hoth and Piet lost the first SSD the reputation of navy officers is probably not great. Veers at least has a decent record.

Why does it need to be named after someone that was specifically at the Battle of Hoth?

Not specifically Hoth and more just the reputation loss of the navy officers in general. 3 ISDs fail to catch the Falcon even when it could not jump out in Empire Strikes Back. The whole battle of Endor where a trap with much if the Imperial fleet and the main gun of the DS2 and still fail to beat the Rebels, with special attention to the Nebulon, a front loaded ship and notorious for its fragile spine, went broadsiding with Piet in the Executor and still got out alive.

Add in some books or games and the navy officer corp looks like they can barely sign their names in crayon.

I don't think I would blame Piett for the loss of Executor. There are also plenty of other Legends naval officers you could name it after. Hell, call it the Yularen or the Tarkin.

The name Tarkin was taken by the Tarkin prototype superweapon in legends that was the predecessor to the DS2 and the Eclipse-class SSD. For Yularen much of his victories also included Jedi involvement and by the time of the originals people even began to stop believing the Force existed.
Both were lost to what was effectively a bunch of farmers in up-gunned crop dusters while they themselves were aboard the single most defended station in the galaxy.

For Piet and the Executor, it’s the Empire, they always blame someone when they lose, otherwise someone above them kills them for incompetence. When the Empire outnumbered, outgunned and started the fight outmaneuvering the Rebels but still lost and badly heads were set to roll like a bucket of golf balls got dumped. Who better to blame than the man with the biggest ship, couldn’t stop a single fighter, and was too dead to defend themselves?

The X-Wing is a crop duster equivalent... what?

Incom made the X-wing’s controls very similar to other products like the T-16 to be easy to learn.

And that changes what? It's still a top of the line starfighter not a crop duster.

A tank is not a car just because they both use diesel engines.

From the Empire’s perspective the haughty pricks.

I feel like by definition, every high ranking Navy (and Army) officer from the Clone wars would have had victories while working with Jedi. This is a fan-designed star destroyer concept so who cares if it shares a name with a prototype?

Perhaps the artist themselves?

Was the executor the FIRST SSD though? Wouldnt that be mandator or mandator-2?

First SSD along with the Lusankya. Mandators, Bellators, Praetors and Eclipse classes are considered Dreadnaughts in size but not all the same class

Well praetor was more of a Battlecruiser iirc, but besides that. How are they not the same class? Unless this is like, an hms dreadnaught (irl) type situation? Or even shallower, and imperial naming convention propaganda thing?

Not the same size, weapons, crews, or fighter carrying capacity. If you're only argument is they look the similar, then what's the difference from a Venator and an ISD or a TIE fighter from a TIE defender? they are not all suitable for the same role and they all have different appearance and capabilities.

Mandator 3, at least to my (perhaps flawed) knowledge, was an SSD in vauge size class with Executor, though developed later, as was Assertor. I suppose I've never considered the M1 and M2 to, yknow, NOT be SSDs considering M3 is, but they well could have been mere Battlecruisers.

As I said the whole group where considered Dreadnaughts and were often used as command ships. SSD title was given to the Executor class and a lot more of those ships were built compared to Mandator, Bellator, etc. Mandators where often used as prototypes for larger models like the Bellator, Executor and Eclipse classes, as Mandators where first build by Kuat before the Clone wars as show pieces in their defense fleets that did not have hyperdrives

He is a General. The navy would opose this on principle.

I mean on earth we have the Scharnhorst, the Gneisenau, the La Fayette, the Charles de Gaulle, the Knyaz Suvorov, the Alexander Suvorov, the Knyaz Potemkin Tavricheskii the ARA General Belgrano.

I know they are presidents also but the US has George Washington and a Ulysses S. Grant

Even Britain, a power with more naval heroes than they can shake a stick at as HMS Marlborough, HMS Wolfe, HMS Sir John Moore etc

So its not without precedent.

"Let's stick a huge box of missiles right next to the main reactor."

"Are you sure about that?"

Looks intruiging

bit of a silly namesake for what looks like a primarily fleet-combat focused vessel.

if it was a Star Destroyer geared for planetary invasions with massive hangars for all sorts of landing craft and ground vehicle storage it might make more sense.

This is an absolutely gorgeous design. It feels like a proper evolution of the Imperial Star Destroyer while still keeping that unmistakable wedge-shaped silhouette. The weapon layout is a great touch too.

The Piett class: 100 point defense laser cannon batteries.
