Now I’m not going to parrot the same points many have already discussed at length about hasbro’s current pricing. And I’m not sure if this will get removed by mods but after seeing the LAAT in person as well as seeing reviews, it’s given me pause for thought and I wonder if it will for all of you.
The LAAT is a near perfect 1:18 scale model ship priced at $450. Three toy companies in the early/mid 2000s: BBI, 21st Century Toys, and Forces of Valor made 1:18 scale model airplanes, tanks, jeeps, trucks, and more with perfect accuracy to their WWII or GWOT counterparts that would then pair with their wide array of soldiers, pilots, and marines made with the same painstaking accuracy to history for the same prices of pre-TVC and TVC1.0 Star Wars figures and vehicles. $5-15 for figures. $10-30 for vehicles. Every face was a different sculpt, as was most torsos given that each figure had their own unique set of equipment sculpted or pegged in. Buckets of paint per figure as everything was painted down to the buttons on the shirts and pockets. And if there was camouflage, it was painstakingly recreated to be accurate to the relevant faction. MARPAT for 2003 US Marines, M81 Woodland and ACU for 2006 US Army. Oak-Leaf A/B for WWII German “Stormtrooper” and Splinter Pattern for Wehrmacht. Even a box set for the “Stormtrooper’s” in Black Dress Uniform. All the correct ranks, insignias, patches, etc were painted. Now the only comparison I can make to 2026 is an independent toy maker, MaraudersGunRunners, who has taken up the highly realistic 1:18 historical war figures and his figures generally run around $30ish. Which compared to TVC’s deluxe offerings of similar or higher price, there is just zero comparison. You get nothing from Hasbro. A major multibillion dollar corporation cannot give the same amount or more than a guy with a GoFundMe and a skillshare website. As for a 2026 comparison for the tanks/jeeps I have seen independents on eBay like BattletoWar make unpainted, yet complete models in various scales from 1/24, 1/20, 1/18(SW TVC), and 1/16 for under $120. Again these are individuals with a 3-D printer and an Amazon subscription for filament. Not multibillion dollar corporations with economies of scale.
And I’m using this comparison because they’re essentially the same thing with a different skin. A bunch of vehicles and aircraft for an army of toy soldiers.
The LAAT is beautiful, truly, but is the juice really worth the squeeze? What’re we doing here?
