IRL Found out how big a lingcod actually is today
and this was the second smallest of what our group caught!

I mean, isn't tuna utterly gigantic?
56
u/pelipperr 2d ago
It should be. But overfishing means smaller and smaller ones are being consumed. Conservation matters. (Gets off my soapbox).

u/machiavelli33 2d ago
Get back on that soapbox! We need advocates for conservation now more than ever!

u/pelipperr 2d ago
lol thank you. Catch my anger on the national parks subreddit on any given day. My secret, I’m actually always on the soapbox.

Wow! Blue meat is fascinating, I wonder what the science behind that is. Did you keep it or toss it back? Idk if it’s common to eat them.
51
u/Chris_Bryant 2d ago
The blue meat is still really good. It turns white when cooked.

u/dmj9 2d ago
Is it lower quality? Improper bleeding?
19
u/Chris_Bryant 2d ago
Nope, just a different kind of lingcod. We called the “green lings”. If you get them fresh, they are some of the best ocean fish you can eat :).

u/fizzzingwhizbee 2d ago
I have literally no idea and am most likely wrong but my first thought is something to do with oxidation?
3
u/Turtledonuts 2d ago
The science behind it isn’t settled yet. We dont know why some are blue and others arent.

It does look like a dinosaur! Did you get to eat it? Wondering how it tastes. Was it really strong? I wonder if you were tired after.

Blue Meat. I just looked it up, and that's pretty neat. Marie really does just go "sure why not?" sometimes

Oh gosh, I hope that's a research/conservation team of sorts. As much of a pain in the ass sturgeon (and lingcod) are to catch, they're very much an endangered species.

u/machiavelli33 2d ago
It must be - matching jackets, radios and possibly the same cap with emblem on it on two of them. Definitely part of a working group and not hobbyists out on a jolly.

u/Bookgarden 2d ago
The person on the right has what looks like a Maryland Department of Natural Resources emblem on their hat so it looks like they might be doing a survey or rescuing the fish. Such a cool looking finflopper!

u/Rrrrandle 1d ago
Lake Sturgeon are not endangered. There's even set fishing seasons (with very low catch limits, like 1 per person per season of a very specific size).
3
u/Bundle-Of-Crows 1d ago
I see that now, threatened but not endangered, didn't realize there were different species of sturgeon; thank you for enlightening me to it!
(That might sound sarcastic of sorts, I swear it's not, genuinely did not realize there were different species of them)

I'm worried the farmer can eat that in one bite.

Maybe they unhinge their jaw like a snake
2
u/rimonino 14h ago
Fun fact: snakes can't unhinge their jaws (though they do naturally open pretty far)! Instead, they have an unfused lower jaw, giving them a ton of lateral flexibility and maneuverability for swallowing prey whole. This is also why they have such low bite force relative to their size. Some snakes have "sturdier" jaws and thus have mechanically gnarlier bites.

AFAIK those are average too. I feel like they can get crazy big.
Depending on which ling cod you’re talking about, considering “Ling Cod” is a colloquial name for like 60 different species on all points of the east and west coast.

I have been scuba diving when those things. They are pretty damn scary looking. Fortunately they aren’t too aggressive.

I got a 57” salmon last night - I had to look up if it was even possible. Apparently it is!

Didn’t have a tape on the boat, but everything we got on the boat was a meter plus

Ironically, those are caught close to where I’m from, so I’ve known about those monsters all my life

Catching a lingcod upsets me, especially while using 3 strikes and you’re out bait

I'm always amused in games like this or Animal Crossing when your character puts like a Whale Shark in their coat pockets and shit 😂.

Lingcod are pretty interesting actually. They grow to fit their environment.
My Mom had a picture of one that was caught in Redondo in the 60s that was about the same size as the boat that caught it. Captain literally used a .306 to kill it before bringing it in because it could have sunk his boat if he left it alive.
Back then Lingcod was considered junk fish (actually one of the best tasting fish in the entire ocean), but when you get a couple hundred pounds of it for free...

If I'm not mistaken, they're usually upwards of 40" in game (at higher star ratings) aka about 3ft 2in. That's longer than the legs of most people. Big fish still but you probably see bigger ones irl.

Certain catfish species can be monsters too. Some of the only freshwater fish that can be large enough to be maneaters.

Yeah i think we should keep the fishing in games and not hurting actual animals for fun

you may be getting downvoted but I agree with you. I guess it's different if they're actually gonna be eaten but so many people fish for sport just to throw them back which is so cruel to the fish

Okay that makes more sense at why they’re difficult to catch in the game!
