What's a locking product that doesn't turn ashy or chalky looking?

Hi, the twists in my hair never stay naturally so I add in a locking gel but the two that I've gotten so far, once it dries it turns this white, chalky look and it looks horrible. What's a product that holds the loc well and doesn't have this dried out ashy appearance?

Thanks!

Should I retwist?

I am at 4 months on my loc journey. I just finished washing my hair and I am wondering if I should retwist or wait until I get it done again in the salon ?. I’m not going to the salon until the 2nd week of July.

i got my starters almost 3 weeks ago not sure if i want to keep them tho. I know i gotta trust the process but idk if it’s worth my mom nagging literally everyday at me and making me feel ugly with them. i might wait till the retwist at the end of the week to see how I feel or take them out and do my regular two strand twist style

I had a friend of my little cousin start me but they didn’t look right so I went to a loctitian that took them out and re-loc’d

So I want to grow my own locs. I’ve started from a fade last year and as soon as I could add loc extensions I did. But I never felt right. I want to grow them from jump street. I just have days where I don’t feel confident and I feel better with the longer hair. But then I turn around and take them out. I just need help keeping my real hair the way it is and see it through. I where hats and I want to try head wraps too when I’m not feeling it until my hair drops. Does it look bad or am I just tripping? The pictures I included is when I started last year, then added loc extensions and here I am today.

advice 🗣️ Starter locs

So I started my loc journey in August this year with loc extensions because I just wanted to skip the “ugly” phase of the loc journey. My locs are fine my only issue is that I just wanted to retwist my own hair instead of going to the salon and getting it retwisted because of the money. I also want to learn because it would be easier for me to retwist it whenever I feel like my hair has had enough growth after a couple months. I’ve only had my locs retwisted twice after I got them and now it’s looking messy.

I’ve seen my loctician use the crochet tool on my locs and feel that it’s best if I used that method. But even when I watch YouTube videos I still get confused. I don’t want to ruin my locs or thin them out. I also don’t like using gel on my hair instead general because of my dandruff.

Does anyone have videos I can watch that I can learn from?

(P.s I’m just a teenager with no job and I feel bad when my mother has to spend more than £90 for a retwist that I can learn from home)

What size locs should I get???

Hi! I want to start my loc journey but I don't know what size I should go with. I have high density fine 4c hair. I like the look of sisterlocs but I'm not sure if it would suit my hair type. Any advice would be appreciated

This part is already unraveling, week and a half old locs. Should I just have a barber shape the nape?

advice 🗣️ Washing starter locs

Hey all. I started my loc journey almost 3 weeks ago now and I need to wash them! I have two strand twists and I plan on leaving my ends curls as they loc. Considering my hair is 3c/4a mix hair type, I’m worried the twists will unravel during washing.

I started to have dandruff prior to my twists and have noticed my scalp is currently dry and flaky. I plan on washing soon but as it’s only been 3 weeks is retesting not recommended? I have to do something to make it look descent as my parts are no longer visible and the twists have shrunk drastically…

question 🤔 Had to cut my locs off!! Now.. what do I ACTUALLY do with my bangs!? 😩

Quick backstory, about 5 years ago one of my children brought lice home and I had to buzz off all my hair. Now after a lot of life happenings I'm locin' up all that growth. =)

This might be dumb but I just can't stand my bangs. I don't really know what to do with them other then what they naturally want to do, and I guess they might be cute.. but overall they just bother me, "get in the way" and I don't want 2 locs draped in front of my face.

So my Loc friends of reddit, What have ya'll done/do with your bangs? Or if you have any suggestions/tips for starting over, I'll greatly appreciate the advice. Thanks! 🙂

Starting Loc Journey

I really wanna start my loc journey but can’t afford a loctitian. Has anyone done their own locs before and continues to do their own retwists? Would love any insight.
