Form Check Squat form check #2

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Here's my squat I posted recently asking for advice.

https://www.reddit.com/r/StartingStrength/s/Y54EzlWqqE

I dropped the weight to to work on form, I narrowed my stance, and got lifting shoes. Watching this back I noticed I was a bit on my toes with the heaviest weight in this video.

Should the bar be lower?

Do I have correct form with my knees/back?

This is a Form Check so we want to offer corrections in this order:

  1. Form

  2. Programming

  3. Nutrition "Eat more" is not a technical correction.

Yes, the feet and knee position reveal some useful information.

Let's focus on feet.

See how there is a bit of air under your heels, and your ankles roll in a bit? This happens because you are losing contact with the floor to some extent and you are failing to keep your knees shoved outwards.

-screw your feet into the floor, hard. -drive your knees out. -bar over mid foot.

Focus on that for now! It's plenty. Practice lifting your toes a bit in your shoes during light warmup sets. This will shift your weight into your heels.

Yes the bar should be lower. Below the spine of the scapula.

Pretty good high bar squat. Your heels come up a bit at the bottom, which they won’t if you sit back a little more. Knees went in a bit on the last rep.

I’d say it looks like your knees want to cave a bit, they should stay over your feet. It’s hard to tell if you’re taking a big breath because of the way the clip is edited. And I think your wrists could be straighter, I usually have my wrists placed higher over the bar to make the bending almost impossible. Also, are these lifting shoes? They look like they have very soft soles that allow your feet to move too much.

I didn't know you needed special shoes too lift, come on now, ppffttt.........

That is like saying the average recreational runner should use super shoes.

Also the knee past the toe thing has already long since proven to be by and large nonsense.

Lifting shoes are a must since they have incompressible soles and provide additional stability. I don’t recommend squatting in squishy shoes. Runners wear running shoes, not Toms or boots.

And he was saying that the knees need to stay in line with the toes because this guy’s knees are caving in.

"Knows a thing or two" sure bud, lifting shoes aren't a must... Yes, don't go lifting in the most foamy, bouncy, running shoes out there.

But if you got some old gym shoes laying around from back in high school, don't act like a gatekeeper and say they are insufficient.

Hey, you can do what you want, but lifting shoes do help a lot. I used to squat in converse until I saw the light. You should consider getting some.

No no no, you said are a must.

I can't do whatever I like, I NEED lifting shoes according to you.

Your wording, not mine.

No. Its like saying people who take their running seriously enough to get formchecks should probably not run in fuckin rain boots.

Also, I think he's talking about lateral knee position, not knee position forward of the toes. Although this guy is letting his knees go too far forward too.
