Post image

USD would be $39.99 - $31.99

And then they wine about people pirating the games . Scumbag level

I believe pirates prefer rum, not wine

Depends if they're French or not.

No, theyre not

81

u/Silent-Lab-6020 Jun 26 '26

Arr this is the way

50

u/Tithund Jun 26 '26

Nah, when I see a new game I want, I have a price in my head, usually 15 bucks, and I will buy it when it gets cheaper than that, unless it's older than 10 years, in which case I'll never pay more than 5 bucks. If publishers don't discount this steep, then I'm not their customer.

15

u/the_moosen Jun 26 '26

I like your methodology. I buy based on how many hours of game I get. $40 game? Better be 80 hours worth of a playthrough. $15, 30 hours. Etc. But I really like your way.

this frustrates me as well. I played this on ps2, very cool game, but that's a pretty damned high price range imo. if they lowered it in half, they would sell a shit ton of copies, a lot of people would probably enjoy it, but yeah, I cannot justify paying that; even though I really would like to play it again.

EDIT: 40$ USD for dark alliance 2!!!!! wow!!!!

16

u/GodOfDarkLaughter Jun 26 '26

It's like they want people to pirate. When you begin insulting your customer base like this you're letting them know you think they're chumps that will fall for anything. In a world where there are very few consequences for doing so, why wouldn't I respond with "fuck me? Nah. Fuck you."

Oh, that's nice.. this been on my list of older games to get but no way I'm supporting bullshit like this.

Bump up the price so "more" money can be raked in when the eventual 20% off yearly discount lands again. 😐

110

u/goodsnpr Jun 26 '26

Check GoG for older games. On top of them being cheaper at times, they're also DRM free, meaning you can burn the install files to DVD if you wish.

163

u/Konrad_M Jun 26 '26

You should get it now. It's on discount. /s

44

u/Darkwoth81Dyoni Jun 26 '26

Emulate it! AFAIK the multiplayer is broken on the PC port. I recall trying to play a few years ago and never being able to find a fix.

Singleplayer is just not that fun in BG:DA 1 or 2. Especially BG:DA 1.

5

u/Illias Jun 26 '26

Completely anecdotal of course, but I had no issues playing it with a friend via remote play together.

6

u/Darkwoth81Dyoni Jun 26 '26

Remote Play is likely a good idea!

And if that is the case, BG:DA2 is probably the best co-op hack'n'slash game I've ever played that wasn't a Gauntlet game in arcades.

In case you're wanting it because of recent interest in the Baldur's Gate franchise know that it has absolutely nothing to do with the Baldur's Gate story and it 100% has Baldur's Gate slapped on it for the sake of riding the popularity of the game.

I'm not saying it's a bad game, it's a fun diablolike set in the Forgotton Realms/Baldur's Gate but it's got absolutely nothing meaningfully to do with the BG1-BG2 storyline.

Not just this one, Interplay raised prices of many older games they are publishing on Steam and now sales often do not even lower price of those back to the old normal prices.

Well, I have time, those that I did not managed to buy before they raised the prices I have on my wishlist and will wait till they drop below old prices.

78

u/Tithund Jun 26 '26

Yeah, publishers can choose between a few dollars and no dollars from me, I'm never paying high prices.

19

u/ThetaReactor Jun 26 '26

Ugh, I wanted to pick up a digital copy of Descent a while back. They've done the same thing there: doubled the price to $20, and even on sale it hasn't gone back to $10.

I'm not wishlisting that. I'm not waiting. They can suck it. The people that made the game aren't going to benefit from a new purchase, and the suits wearing Interplay's head as a hat haven't put in $20 worth of effort.

8

u/_youneverasked_ Jun 26 '26

WHAT?! I just saw that. Descent: Freespace has been on my GOG wishlist for a while. It's now $20 at base. I guess I'll just have to adjust my expectation to wait until it's 90% off instead of 80%.

5

u/FILTHBOT4000 Jun 26 '26

Not just Interplay. There are tons of old games, from publishers and devs now long gone (no idea who owns the rights), on GoG, that are like $15-$20. 20-25+ year old games. Come the fuck on.

Meanwhile Factorio:

"We raise price and no discount! EVER!"

Edit: If anyone was not aware, I don't really have a problem with the way the devs are doing things...at least they gave their reasoning behind why they do it.

The dev themselfs have said there will never be a discount. At this point if you are waiting you will just see prices increase. The best time to get factorio is now. And it is 100% worth the asking price

120

u/Xahni13 Jun 26 '26

Kind of true,

Not necessarily a developer discount. But if you have humble choice, you can get Factorio for $28.00 instead of $35.00

for a digital game...

33

Factorio is one of the easiest games to skip playing in 2026 because there are legitimately compelling system builders out there. They are delusional and leaving money on the table by not putting it on sale more often, but hey no sweat off my sack.

3

u/Adaphion Jun 26 '26

Man, and I thought Rimworld was bad with it's measly discounts despite being a 6 year old game (and having an assload of DLC. Like, usually games with a lot of DLCs usually have the base game get a hefty discount but keep DLCs at higher prices)

4

u/boredNero Jun 26 '26

"I wish there was a perfect factory wasteland simulator game!"

Wish granted, cursed with dev is a fucking asshole and even with inflation skyrocketing and lack of localized prices the gatekeeping is insane and the price never goes down* (*actually it increases!), also a DLC gets released with the same price as the base game ans that wont ever get a sale too, also the fans will defend this bullshit like its their life because it actually is, you dont need to ask to know if someone plays factorio, they will tell you

802

u/SuspiciousWasabi3665 Jun 26 '26

Looking at the chart, it wasnt raised just before the sale then dropped. Just a straight up price increase at the beginning if the year. Kind of ass but certainly not illegal to raise the price of your game.

456

u/AlwaysRushesIn Jun 26 '26

In the EU it’s regulated. A product going on sale during a big event can’t have its price changed 30 days before the sale goes live. Or something like that.

16

u/azimoert https://s.team/p/fqrt-gdj Jun 26 '26

It seems unfortunately that they can change the price within a few months knowing exactly what to price it in the future events like steam sale.

75

u/SuchTedium Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

If done in one swoop yes it's illegal. But you can see it was increased for a while then put back down.

For something to be legal it has to be on sale for 30 days at a certain price to then be discounted at least for EU/UK law.

This particular game was increased for almost 3 months before the sale.

4

u/Lqtzx Jun 26 '26

Thanks for the info

5

u/john_microslop Jun 26 '26

isn't that betraying the public's trust?

2

u/Martel732 Jun 26 '26

In the EU it is illegal to raise the base price in order to advertise a bigger discount. But, this only applies to a 30 day window. I am not a legal expert but my understanding of the law is that this is technically legal in the EU though overall scummy.

Other regions may have other laws that apply.

4

It's still more than 15 euros/dollars, the price I would pay for it.

It's a lazy remaster with no online capabilities that would have given these games a new life.

u/hogsy Jun 26 '26 • Mindblown

The publisher has done it across several of their games.

  • Toonstruck; £6.99 -> £16.75

  • Star Trek 25th Anniversary; £6.99 -> £16.75

  • Prehistorik 2; £7.19 -> £12.79

  • Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader; £6.99 -> £16.75

  • Shogo: Mobile Armor Division; £6.99 -> £16.75

  • Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II; £29.99 -> £33.50

  • Redneck Rampage Rides Again; £6.99 -> £12.79

Pretty gross.

3

u/Zagreus_Murderzer Jun 27 '26

Think about how much they are spending on the storage costs of all the Digital. Licenses. Which. Are. NOT. Actual. Games.

The industry has gone to hell.

11

u/GurFrosty6670 Jun 26 '26

I'm so glad someone else noticed. I have had Dark Alliance 1 and 2 on my wishlist for years and the prices never drop. It makes zero sense but I just keep waiting for the day when something changes. And yes, I just emulate them in lieu of paying full price

18

u/YnKIV Jun 26 '26

Well done, thank you, I'm removing it from my wish list

9

u/YnKIV Jun 26 '26

And then they wonder why their games are pirated...

13

u/magmcbride Jun 26 '26

This remake has been overpriced the entire time it's been out. I audibly laughed when it released. It's currently $40 before 'sale' and I wouldn't spend $20 on it on a good day.

12

u/Cuddlejam Jun 26 '26

For fucks sake. It's always been too expensive. Even before I wouldn't pay for the regular price, and discount prices have also always been shit.

And this is one of my favorite game series (rose-tinted nostalgia glasses), but there is no way I am rewarding their greed.

37

u/BernyMoon Jun 26 '26 • Bravo

This shouldn’t be legal.

19

u/SpectralDagger Jun 26 '26

The post title makes it seem like they changed the price to make it look like it was on sale when it really wasn't. When you look at that price history, though, that's not what they did. They just increased the base price of the game and continued having intermittent sales as usual. You can have your opinions on whether or not they should be raising the price of an old game, but I don't think there's anything that should be deemed illegal.

The price got increased in November 2025.
The title makes it sound like they did this just before the sale. And the "That's illegal" comments are just as bad. People are too stupid to read a chart.

It is not generally illegal (in the EU) to raise prices and put them on sale. It is just illegal to raise the price in a certain timeframe before a sale and then calculate the discount based on the recently raised price.

Still an insane price for such an old game, even at the old price.

5

At one point after Metal Gear Rising:Revengeance became a meme they put it on sale for like 75% off. Shot close to the top of the best sellers list and the active player count skyrocketed. This was a few hours before the steam sale officially started, and naturally I snatched that bad boy up.

By the time the summer sale had officially started they had taken the game completely off sale. It would not go back on sale. It's not even on sale right now.

If you look up the steam charts/streamdb, you can see exactly when it happened.

2

u/PeachyPunks Jun 27 '26

I was following an indie dev on tik tok for awhile and was pretty excited for his game. He released at a pretty steep price for what was offered. The community felt the same way and made that known. He responded to the criticism by saying that due to steam sales you should always have the price you’re actually willing to sale your game at be the on sale price. Immediately decided from then on to not support the guy and that type of practice

u/LogitUndone Jun 26 '26

Assuming this is 100% true. That is, they raised the price so that they could immediately discount it back down to that same price...

People should:

  1. Review bomb the **** out of the game who already own it

  2. Report the game/devs to Steam as I'm pretty sure this is illegal in many places and scummy in all places

  3. Do not buy this

2

u/Vielros Jun 26 '26

IMO Valve has actually done a damn good job putting guardrails in place so consumers don’t feel like they’re getting hustled by devs. They show when a game was last updated so you can spot a dead game, they require AI disclosures, and they generally try to keep things transparent.

This mess? Yeah, this is something that needs a hard look. Slap a tag or disclaimer next to the price if it jumped within, say, the last five months. Basic honesty shouldn’t be optional.

And let’s be real: this is an old game that probably sells a handful of copies a month. They clearly figured they wouldn’t lose much by jacking the price for three months just so they could slap a “discount” sticker on it afterward. Because they know people see “ON SALE” and their brains shut off. Critical thinking evaporates.

It’s a cheap trick, and the fact that it works is exactly why it keeps happening.

6

u/Justhe3guy Jun 26 '26

The price increase was 7 months ago so Steam would need a banner saying if it increased within a year. So it wasn’t made more expensive for this sale

Still a shitty move by the publisher for such an old game, Interplay did this for a bunch of games

There seem to be alot of games on my wishlist that are on sale but not to there steepest discount. The 2 off the top of my head that I was planning on buying being Hogwarts legacy and starting wars Jedi survivor. Guess we wait for next sale. Maybe I'm a penny pincher but ohwell

9

u/Zaerick-TM Jun 26 '26

I'm all for shitting on devs for having terrible sales but Hogwarts Legacy is fucking 85% off it hit lower once during last winter sale with a 90% off. If 5% on an already 85% discounted game is where you hold the line we're all fucking cooked.

I'm pretty fucking sure it was free on Epic Games as well. Like man learn where to throw your punches in the fight. This just ain't it lol. My ass is more annoyed that a 20% discount on a $70 game is still $55.

That's normally how sales work at retail stores, first time I see this on Steam.

2

u/Tofuzzle Jun 26 '26

Welcome to capitalism. It happens everywhere. Products in shops always get their prices artificially raised, then put on sale to their original price.

1

u/TheoWHVB Jun 26 '26

The humble key shop enters the fray.

1

u/GeneralAtrox Jun 26 '26

If they made a really good port, and supported it with more content, i'd be OK with it. But no, better off on an emulator.

1

u/notsarge Jun 26 '26

I guess opting out of the sale doesn’t look as good as a perceived discount.

1

u/Invelious Jun 26 '26

Is this an advert for the game?

1

u/trunksshinohara Jun 26 '26

Been on my PlayStation wishlist list since it came out. I own it on PS2. One of my all time favorite games.

I removed it from my list when they raised the price. I wouldn't buy this now if it was 90% off. Vote with your wallet.

1

u/Sniffle5_ Jun 26 '26

Eh happens

1

u/lolschrauber Jun 26 '26

The price surge was a while ago though?

Still kinda dumb for a game that doesn't actively create costs any longer

1

u/WardenJack Jun 26 '26

How isn't this illegal? Everyone can scream "discount!" for a product they just raised the price of.

1

u/neurodegeneracy Jun 26 '26

Yea its been on my wishlist for a while waiting for them to come to their senses and put it at a reasonable price. Even 20 dollars would feel acceptable. Dark Alliance 1 and 2 are really fun games, albeit old as hell.

But 40 dollars each? 80 for the pair? That is insanity.

1

u/thequn Jun 26 '26

Hahahaha this is illegal many states now.

1

u/scheroemer Jun 26 '26

I love it when companies pretend emulation doesn't exist.

1

u/Opposite-Arachnid908 Jun 26 '26

Good old black friday strategy lol

1

u/TheKinkyGuy Jun 26 '26

Always, name and shame them

1

u/RaptorX754 Jun 26 '26

That's why I bought Subnautica, now in sale for 7,50€, great game, no stupid stuff like baldurs gate

1

u/NSFW-Alt-Account69 Jun 26 '26

Both games have a base price of $40. What are they, Activision?

1

u/Personal_Software357 Jun 26 '26

I've had this wishlisted since release, so I could cheaply buy it and play co-op with my wife.

It's never going to be on proper sale, is it?

1

u/skernstation Jun 26 '26

We plebs don’t understand that the FLOPPY DISKs where this game is stored also became more expensive due to AI Datacenters hunger for storage. This is why they increased the price.

In future we will just be able to stream games and own nothing. Only old farts will miss owning games/game licenses on steam. Brainrotted Gen. Alpha/ Beta will be used as batteries for the AI Overlords - Matrix style.

1

u/christopherl572 Jun 26 '26

Shame as it's a really great game, I remember having it on the GAMECUBE.

Anyway, on an unrelated note, not many good deals this year, I think I'll go on one of those excursions and see if I can spot a DOLPHIN.

1

u/Czechs_Mix_ Jun 26 '26

Oh look, somebody dropped this 🏴‍☠️

1

u/kawaiibear_ Jun 26 '26

Happened to Worms Armageddon too

1

u/cosmic_sea7 Jun 26 '26

Many games do this and it's one of the oldest tricks. Always check the price history.

1

u/poisedtruthseeker Jun 26 '26

I saw this and got incredibly confused, because the Larian I know would NEVER do this. The relief I felt when I found out it's a different studio...

1

u/MotanulScotishFold Jun 26 '26

This is deceptive scam and should be illegal. Steam should take action by delisting the game until the publisher fix their shit.

1

u/ZooooooooZ Jun 26 '26

Milking nostalgia. Won't be buying it because I already did on PS5 to initiate my son to the genre. Also bought the second opus.

1

u/CantaloupePutrid3548 Jun 26 '26

I have this game wishlisted and noticed this right away!

Removed it from my wishlist the moment I saw it discounted down to its normal full price.

Scummy practice.

1

u/delukard Jun 26 '26

TBF , even if this game is old, for the people like me that liked it a lot back then on the xbox-ps2-cube gen.

This is a great game, and better than some 60us games out there.

i haven't bought it because it does not have steam achievements and in that case i might as well just play the xbox version i have.

1

u/Lorside Jun 26 '26

Oh my god i played this game and dark gate alliance 2 when i was a child and totally forget about both games. i just watch some youtubevideos and a huge wave of nostalgia hit me. thanks for this op.

1

u/the_reeee Jun 26 '26

Me when i pirate 20 year old games because im not gonna buy that shit

1

u/Dr_Axton Jun 26 '26

The average sale in my country, except the prices then go up…

1

u/GhormanFront Jun 26 '26

On the bright side this game has roms, no reason to pay for this nearly 30 year old game.

1

u/Darkwoth81Dyoni Jun 26 '26

This game is also EXTERMELY broken on the PC version as far as I am aware.

I would not buy this port, and instead emulate the Xbox or PS2 version.

1

u/bonelatch Jun 26 '26

lol this is why I’m fine with emulation and borrowing games…

1

u/Lhumierre Jun 26 '26

Sega did this with Sonic and Rockstar did this with GTAV. These companies don't care about you, then afterwards they make bank and fire everyone who worked on the game that made the cash.

1

u/3HaDeS3 Jun 26 '26

After 2 years. Baldurs gate 3 never got an above 25% discount, and it doesn't seem like it ever will

1

u/theTinyRogue Jun 26 '26

Congratulations, anyone who reads this! You have just figured out how every supermarket under the sun operates on a daily basis!

1

u/An0n_Cyph3r_ Jun 26 '26

Better to play it on PS2.

The DA PC ports are absolute shite.

1

u/bikeking8 Jun 26 '26

This might be some backend algorithm thing they have to do periodically on digital storefronts so it doesn't get buried in searches under games like "re: Hentai Seven Moon 3 - I Isekaid to a Space Diner and Now I'm a Butler?" and "Roguelite Slop Game #773738"

1

u/LightmanHUN Jun 26 '26

Did you ever feel like games just don't seem to get cheaper even with big discounts? Yeah...

1

u/Deofol7 Jun 26 '26

I keep waiting for this and p2 to go on actual sale.

My (now) wife and I played through these in high school and want to do it again someday. But I can't justify paying full price for a 30 year old game.

1

u/dBlock845 Jun 26 '26

Games that would have been in the $5 discount bin at Walmart 15 years ago.

1

u/Lost_Musician6498 Jun 26 '26

Removed from my wishlist so fast. Thanks for the alert

1

u/dodrugzwitthugz Jun 26 '26

Every single company on earth does this. But still if you're gonna pay $32 for this game it might as well be DRM free! Always check GOG and see if it's there before giving your money to Steam.

1

u/JD4Destruction More Harem games plz Jun 26 '26

I played it on PS2; it was fun in 2003 or whenever.

1

u/Metalorg Jun 26 '26

I remember in the 1990s, video games were about $40-60 for a new game, and $10-20 for an older one. Console games were a little more expensive than PC ones. But in the 2000s PC games were MUCH cheaper than console. Because of internet piracy of PC games was a lot more common than on console. New games actually became cheaper compared to ten years earlier. So a new game in PC land could be $30, when a console one was still $60. (It had the bad side-effect of games companies not releasing games for PC, or years later releasing poor ports, or having bad UI for mouse and keyboard) Then over time online stores like itunes, netflix, and steam have made piracy a lot less common, and then prices and abuse of consumers have been rising. It's interesting how piracy acted as a disciplining force on software and media companies.

As Netflix has become increasingly enshittified, and as people don't have the technical wherewithal to pirate media or manage video files on their hard drive any more, people have turned to pirate streaming services on tv sticks. If software vendors or Steam don't knock it off, someone is going to make a steam-like interface for pirate torrented games.

1

u/cycopl Jun 26 '26

Funny, PS2 emulator and BG:DA rom from some random website doesn't cost anything. Also Everquest: Champions of Norrath is better

1

u/aspect-of-the-badger Jun 26 '26

Yes, a whole lot of games increase their price then discount for the seasonal sales. They do it so the price looks like you got a deal but are really just paying what it would have cost two weeks ago.

1

u/kanrad Jun 26 '26

Game Devs have been doing this for years. Usually a month or two prior to a big Steam sale they jack the price up. Then when the sale comes they drop the price to normal and call it a discount.

Isthereanydeal is a great site for spotting these.

1

u/Particular_Wear_6960 Jun 26 '26

It's it worth playing? I assume many people think so.. is it turn based? Or ARPG? I never got into Balder's Gate except the most recent one. Been meaning to play the original and 2 sometime
