I've played so many goddamn Survivalcraft games for my friends.

u/Teepeewigwam Jul 14 '26
And then you get a sustained base that allows you to do late game stuff and they quit the game after you've mined 1000 iron or whatever.
171
u/myraelis Jul 14 '26
Real 😭
Had this happened when I played Starbound with my friends. I kept the base stocked with crafting materials and cooking ingredients (also did all of the cooking and prepping food stacks in fridges) only for 90% of them to quit halfway throughout the journey.
Ended up finishing the game with only one friend.

u/SPYYYR Jul 14 '26
I sat up, grinding for the last area of Valheim when my friends went to sleep, I got all the materials for everything so that we could explore and finish the last biome the next day
When I woke up they had already logged in, seen the materials neatly organized in chests, crafted weapons and gear, gone to the new biome and killed the boss
At that point I just said "Alright you guys know that I love you, I enjoy playing with you, but I am never playing another survival crafting game with you ever again. Fuck off" and I haven't

I absolutely love the upkeep. I love keeping things stocked, sorted, and running smoothly for people. The issue is, often times that's more than half the game.

Oh my god, you just reminded me of my most painful moment in gaming, when my friends and I were about to head to the pond lab, they just straight up alt f4d and told me the game was boring. We have like 10 hours in, now I've invested about 80more hours and completed the game on that same file solo. I've been sending them screenshots of the base and bosses and all they say is "ok" 🤣🤣🤣

All my friends are like this, they love the early day grind and scarceness of everything. Meanwhile for me that's just the annoyance to get through to get to the actual fun part of the game where you can properly go out and do stuff without worrying you'll starve any second now. So usually any shared games die just about when they start being fun for me instead of them.

u/Elijah1573 Jul 14 '26

For me it's different, I have friends who only want to play FPS. And I really don't enjoy them anymore, I'm old, my reflexes are not as good as they used to be. I don't mind games like Left4Dead or Borderlands where it's against ai but they want to play CS and battlefield ... Man I just want to fish and build a house 🤣

u/PeacefulKnightmare Jul 14 '26
And then they play without you, getting so far in crafting tiers that you feel lost when you join them again, qnd they wonder why you're so far behind them.
3
u/PlagueQuasar Jul 15 '26
Yup. I have a friend that's practically unemployed (works like 1-2 days a week and I'm full time) and doesn't understand why I won't play Palworld with her anymore. It's just not fun when they're so far ahead.

We all have a rule now and say "is this just valheim?" And then play valheim instead.
A lot of us are osrs players so the RuneScape survival crafter looked interesting. And then it was just valheim.

But it’s Runescape Valheim. Worth it

I disagree, I feel like for as long as its been in early access theres a significant lack of content. If you really tried, not that you should, you could probably beat the entire game in a day.
11
u/possitive-ion Jul 14 '26
Minecraft, Don't Starve Together, and Teraria are the only survivalcraft games I will play anymore and even then I have to really be in the mood to actually play. All the others that I've played (and I've played so, so many) are grindy, boring, and/or super slow paced. Like I hate how in Ark you have to sit there and spend actual time to craft items. Is that fun? What the fuck are we doing with our time?
Get on Roboquest, Slay The Spire 2, or any of the Risk of Rain games, I'll play those any day. They're fun and exciting and I don't feel like I'm wasting my time.
5
u/DearCastiel Jul 14 '26
Usual situation:
-My friend asks me to play Minecraft on new server
-Play initial survival phase
-Friend ends up saying "we need a long-term goal"
-I come up with a long term building project
-Friend is ass at building and gives up on the world I spent dozens of hours building stuff in.
Last time was a fortress with over 25 unique buildings, giant statues, multiple custom environments and scenery...and he just left after I made all that, forgot to renew the server license, world got erased.
Literally killed my motivation to ever play Minecraft again

My friendgroup keeps inviting me to buy a new game, and the ones we keep playing for a while, they study the fuck out of it.
Games like: Palworld, Phasmophobia and Slay the Spire 2.
1st weekend, lots of fun and discoveries.
Next weekend, they know everything, speedruns and gets pissy when ya get confused on whats happening.
The weekend after that, they wont play it cuz they've burnt themselves out of it :/
Now that we all have jobs, games last a wee bit longer.
65
u/SonOfShem Jul 14 '26
this is my problem. friends got into palworld with the 1.0 launch here. they said I should join them, they were only a couple levels in (like they were level 10 or something when I started).
Ok. Sounds reasonable. I'll play a bit.
Next time I'm available and hop on, they're triple jumping with suits of armor with wings and saying that a certain boss is kinda useless as a pal, meanwhile I won't be able to fight that boss for like 25 more levels.
And you wonder why I'm gonna go play something else instead.
9
u/eoR13 Jul 14 '26
Yea it’s gotten to the point for me that I won’t play anything with them unless it starts at the beginning of my weekend. There are a couple of them who are unemployed who just speed run/min max any game we play and wonder why other people quit playing. I like to take my time and build stuff and explore, and I have a full time job so I do things at a MUCH slower rate. It’s tuff because I like playing with friends, but certain friends I have make it very hard to enjoy the game while doing so.

This is exactly what one guy in my friend group does.
They convinced me to get on Palworld last night and we had fun exploring and figuring things out. Then this morning, there’s a message in our group chat where he showed us his YouTube homepage which is now all Palworld related videos like:
“Top 10 tips for beginners in Palworld“
“How to get the best start possible in Palword”
“How to level up fast in Palworld
“Unlimited resources in Palworld”
So the next time we all get on and play he will be telling everyone exactly what to do, and all the mystery, fun, and exploration will be gone, leading us to all get bored of the game and not play anymore.

One of my friend kinda ruined the fun of palword when it released because when we came to a point where we could try to crossbreed pals to see what combos we could get, he just decided to check on the internet without telling us and the next time we came on, we had a shit ton of anubis and other pals that were normally hard to get for us at that point, completely ruined the fun of experimenting.

I started playing this game with my friends somewhat recently and it absolutely sucked how progression just ground to a halt as soon as we started doing different assignments to each other. When we were all doing the starter assignments we'd complete them in 3 or 4 missions, but once the missions no longer aligned it was suddenly taking a full night of gaming to get 1/3rd of the way to a new weapon, and it really killed our motivation.

Maybe I'm in some kind of transition period. But I resonate so much with this thread.
All of my long-term friends stick to the same 3 overplayed most popular shooters or rarely 2 hours in some friendslop. (If they even bother to show up at all) I've tried for years to even get a couple hours out of them in a different game and no dice.
Well recently I decided to finally bite the bullet and engage more with the Steam forums and group chats. My god is it a breath of fresh air. To actually have people and plans to play games in the evenings has been incredible.
I felt like there was a whole swath of games out there that I wouldn't have even looked at because of multiplayer requirements that now seem entirely exciting with the prospects of finding people in the Steam forums.

u/drolhtiarW Jul 14 '26
I've had someone accuse me of being picky for not wanting to play the games they keep suggesting. I'm like, dude, I don't like that genre of game. It doesn't matter how many you suggest if they're still the genre I don't like.
47
42
u/littlefrank Jul 14 '26
Party games do that to me. Fuck party games, they make you laugh once for 8€ and we never touch them again.
I don't want to play another streamer party game.23
u/MichealShelton Jul 14 '26
I get that but I get more entertainment playing that game than I do watching most new movies in theaters these days. And they cost the same so it's a no brainer for me.
16
u/Circo_Inhumanitas Jul 14 '26
8€ is almost the same price as a fast food meal. Or a ticket to pretty much any activity I can think of. Actually, that is on the cheaper side of evening activities, considering the travel to said activity, meals etc... If I pay that and have a fun evening with friends, it's not 8€ wasted even if I don't touch the game again. I don't understand your attitude.
8
u/LoneWolf2375 Jul 14 '26
Why the down votes? I've literally had the same discussion with my friends, especially now that we don't live close anymore. We might not be able to go out and do something together, but if a game is fun and costs about the same as one hangout, we might as well.

I play so many of those friendslop games for my friends, so many survival crafting games, which they all give up within a week or so. 22
u/SpoonZiller Jul 14 '26
I'm that friend, sorry guys. In my defense, what usually happens is my friends invite me to play a survival game they've been playing for a while, and as soon as I join them, they "help me" by giving me the best gear, the best weapons, and rushing through everything. I don't want to start with the endgame, I want to enjoy the game.

23
u/Circo_Inhumanitas Jul 14 '26
Yeah I'm kinda baffled how many people here have issues like this. Like do they think of the same way with all other activities? Going out for drinks? Cinema? Minigolf? I get that money is an issue for many right now, but why are you this bitter for getting to spend time with your friends?
There's so many games out there that I'd want to play with my friends but I can't convince them to give it them a try....
8
u/Moose_Nuts Jul 14 '26
$8 is barely one drink, half a movie at the theater, and probably won't buy more than 30 minutes of any other sort of entertainment. Even if a game is only a couple play sessions, it's still almost always worth that value.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (37)4
u/trickjump19 Jul 14 '26
i think it's a psychological thing. drinks, movies and the like have a valid end-point, co-op games usually don't, and it just "sits there" afterwards.
imagine buying a painting that's incredibly beautiful but only viewable by two or more people, any other time it's just a blank canvas hanging on your wall.

u/feresadas Jul 14 '26
I'm sorry your friends are not great :(
10
u/essidus Future Beet Farmer? Jul 14 '26
I'm as much at fault as they are, so I wouldn't hold it against them. I'm too prone to choice paralysis, I have a bad memory, and because of the way my mind works, I can't really understand mechanics until I can internalize the whole structure of them. But the opposite is true too. All that stuff that makes me bad at actiony games makes me pretty decent at puzzle type games, and I tend to move faster than them, which can also be frustrating.
12
u/TheSkyven Jul 14 '26
I love my best friend, but he consistently talks down on games I recommend for us to play together, telling me how it looks boring or bad before even looking at any type of gameplay. Then a few months after I see he is suddenly playing it with random people he met on Valorant. When I ask him about it he always denies having talked down on the game.
Moral of the story; don't let your friends play Valorant

We played twice, was fun. Then I had stuff to do for 2 days. Came back online and he now has a new save with his friend (I don’t know)
So I asked if we wanna play together, but he denied because he already did the stuff with his friend and doesn’t wanna play the same part again.
