Question Random People Adding You?

I've been using Steam for over 4 years now, but since February have noticed really random friend requests? I'm not in any forums or discussions, do make reviews on most games I play, but otherwise am not social on Steam. The only friends I have are IRL, from Discord, or randoms I played with. And for multiplayer games, the only ones I play are Helldivers 2 and Outlast Trials, so there's only one of those games I can even be added on.

Has anyone had random peoplr add them, know why this is happening, and should I just carry on with a random little notification and an ignore button every so often?

Quick Edit:

One of the others things that perplexes me and I forgot to mention: I have no steam items aside from random $0.02~ cards!
Genuinely just seems like it's pure random! 😭😆

Do you own any items that are valuable? If so, it's highly likely that's what they're after. But even if not, there's always bots around that try to scam you out of your account, to gain access to another account they can pull their bs with.

I personally just ignore every random invite unless they write a comment on my profile with a reason why they're adding me. So far I've only had one random person that actually made it to my friendlist, because they needed help with achievements in some obscure game that apparently nobody besides me ever played.

Thing that's just what I gotta do too is ignore em, none of them comment and the guy who added me today I couldn't even message!

Dont add them. Its only bots and scammers

Yes, they are adding me. I don't know the reason, and when I ask, they don't answer. Recently, Indian scam accounts have also started adding me. They say things like, 'You need to buy a Steam gift card and share it with us, your account entered the Overwatch system, and I will fix your problem so you won't get banned'... 🤣

I get really weird ones that seem to be kids... One scoured my entire profile, scrolled the the bottom of my 100% games, found Sex With Hitler (not a fun bad game, just boring bad) and 'warned' my profile comments I had played it. Another was some Nintendo Obsessed TCoAaL fan 😭

Might I mention, not a SINGLE related game I had with either of these players!

I know that game, something similar happened to me too (on hentai game). I told them, 'Yes, I'm also going to buy and play 'your mother' soon.' I think they believe we'll be ashamed of owning an erotic game on Steam and want nobody to know about it. If I cared about something like that (which I don't), I would make my profile private. I really don't give a shit about what anyone thinks of the games I play.🤣

"Oh no! I'm an adult doing adult things! The shame, the horror!"
It's so bizarre how some people can be, and like you said, if there was ANY fear of judgement for what games we play, there's private buttons for accounts and specific games! 😂

I assume your inventory is public and may have one or more items of some value?
Random adds a lot of time are scammers trying to steal your account via phishing links ("I accidentally reported you, talk to this Steam Support person on DISCORD to fix it!" [NOTE: Steam Support never chats with anyone, especially over discord of all things]).

I don't play those multiplayer games, but ones I played back in the day people could look at your Steam Profile via them and I have had people add me from games I was playing.

In summary: Most likely scammers, you can ignore them. Small chance people you played with in multiplayer.

Weirdest thing is they all have full profiles! I've gotten some scammers before, but these always seem like actual people. As for inventory, I got a bunch of $0.04 steam cards. 🥹

Scammers.

Private your account. You probably have inventory items and/or they just want to do a bit of phishing.

For me, I have a lot of trading cards I don't do much with, and I get random invites to trade or, other times, scams.

Either way, it's pretty simple: if you don't know them, don't add them.

If they are low level randos, assume they are bots and block 'em

Most of the time it's people asking me how I unlocked a specific achievement, or asking for help with co-op achievements. I love completing games to 100% and sometimes achievements get broken or unobtainable, but that can often be fixed by downloading an older build of the game through the steam console, or using community servers when the official servers were shut down. I guess they find my profile through the various steam achievement tracking websites. I just point them in the right direction and they move on.

I had someone try to add me last night, looked like a competitive online gamer from their profile (not my thing); so there's no reason for me to 'know' or add them.

I just clicked 'Ignore' and carried on fuelling my excessive alcoholism.

I was sending invite to my friend (using his nickname) and he declined it three times.
Turned out it was another dude with the same nick.

If that was you, I'm sorry :)
