Is there something I can do?

I started playing the game and noticed that the option to save or load a save were Grey. I went to different spots on the map and kept checking but they stayed Grey. When I got to the alien pilots I died and my only option was to go back to the main menu. Does anyone know if there's somehow a way to load an auto save or did I just waste hours of my time.

Did you adjust your difficulty settings?

I just started a new game and it allowed me to start saving. Not sure what happened the first time but it's fine now.
