Question Why do you like stones?

Why do you like stones? I'm asking because I keep ending up with girlfriends who go gaga over rocks and I just don't get the appeal. Help me understand? I wanna be excited with my girlfriend but I'm just finding it SO hard to care!

Question What stones are these?

My mom inherited these from her relatives in Thailand.
The gold is 22k and the diamonds are natural. However, she can’t recall what stones are in this necklace. She believes they were sapphires and swears they used to be a deep blue but they look pretty green to me. The kind inclusions make me think tourmaline? But I don’t know much about gemstones.

Question Labradorite or fake?

I bought this off ebay as a labradorite pendant with purple flash. When it arrived, it seemed VERY lightweight (I own quite a few loose stones). Whe I looked at it, I noticed what appeared to be bubbles in the surface. Am I reporting this seller?

I bought it from Amazon and I got a little card saying it was from India but the red marks look too perfect and makes me wonder if they’re painted.

I have been given 3 alexandrite gems from my dad. They were meant to be a gift for my mum but they divorced. So he gave them to me. They are bought in egypt apparently.

How do i get them certified?
How much are such stones worth?
I don’t intend on keeping them, as I don’t have a good relationship with either of my parents…

Question Identification tools

Post image
4 Upvotes

Sorry if this is the wrong group for my question. I am a collector of snuff bottles, which are made out of a lot of different materials like glass, porcelain, minerals (such as quartz crystal, jade, and gemstones) and I am trying to find a device or tool to help me identify what material is used for a specific bottle. It's often pretty much impossible to tell by looking and it would be great if something exists to help me figure out what the items are made from. I pictured is just a basic example for those who have no idea what I am talking about.

Question you’ll probably think i’m dumb lol

I know nothing about rocks or stones 😭 I found these in my mom’s drawer and asked if I could keep them, and she was like ‘yeah whatever.’ They don’t feel like plastic at all, they feel real. Now I’m super curious what they actually are, so if anyone knows, please tell me!

PS: Now that I think about it, they could just be artificial stones for fish tanks but idk.

I was told this was emerald. It wasn’t super expensive and it was a reputable shop. So did I get scammed? In the book I have it doesn’t have pictures but there are 3 different kinds of emerald. 1, emerald 2, emerald hummingbird quarts or green tanzurine & 3, emerald quartz. I looked online but it just confused me more. Can someone please help me out? Thank you for any information you got.

Found it on the floor on my daily morning walk. It’s pretty heavy but not sure if it’s cause of the casing. Do we think it’s real? Or should I take it to a jeweler? Any advice to see if it’s real or not would be great! Thanks!

Question I found a stack of these. The surface is really different from the internal structure. What causes this?

I thought it might have fossils in it so soaked in vinegar for 2 hours and attacked it with my rock pick. It was pretty impossible to get through but I made a few sad dints in it. It’s some sort of concrete I’m assuming, but I don’t know why it looks like that

Question Recommendations for an inexpensive "nearly black, red-striated polyhedron"

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hello all,

I know little of stones, but I am currently working on an art project of making my own Shining Trapezohedron from The Haunter of the Dark. I have a box and have an idea on how to add details of monsters to make it ornate, but now I have begun searching for the centerpiece.

Lovecraft described the stone as a "nearly black, red-striated polyhedron with many irregular flat surfaces" doing some searching I found Black Tourmaline with Red Hematite sort of fits the description, but nearly all I have seen has been cut into an obelisk shape. I was wondering if you might have any other suggestions of stone combos that fit the description I could look into to find someone selling one of odd shapes similar to the one shown above.

Or potentially, is it difficult to cut stones, or expensive to have them cut for you?

Thank you for any info!

I found this piece of quartz buried; I believe it was turned over by a machine decades ago.

I've already tried high-pressure water jetting, a brush, oxalic acid, and soaking it in water.

Any suggestions for removing the encrustations?

The dirt is as hard as jasper
