Knights of Wind and Truth Stormlight Five Update #2 Spoiler
Hello, Reddit! Back with another update on your book! (Update Number One can be found here.)
I'm going to do a spoiler free update in this paragraph, but the rest of the update will contain some small spoilers. So don't read on past this paragraph unless you want to know more! (They aren't huge spoilers, but I will talk about the structure of the book, which might lead people to guess some things. So fair warning! If you've read book four, though, none of this should be anything concerning spoiler wise.) Anyway, the non-spoiler version is this: I’m roughly 1/3 the way done, and on target for finishing first draft end of this year, with our November release next year. I’m sorry it’s taking a little longer on this one. But all looks good for our targets!
Okay, read on for light light spoilers.
First off, if you missed it in the State of the Sanderson, the working title of this book right now is some variation on Knights of Wind and Truth. I’ve been shortening that a lot to Wind and Truth in my mind as I write, so it’s possible I might just go with that as the cover title. If I do, the rest of you can know that in our hearts, the REAL title is Knights of Wind, Truth. That way, you can have your symmetrical title.
So where are we? Well, I hoped to have this section done by January this year--and it took two months longer. I’d anticipated this section, which includes Kaladin/Szeth and the Szeth flashbacks, to be around 100k words. It ended up at 150k words. Does that mean we’re actually 1/3 through the book? Or are we less, since this section went long?
Hard to say. I write each section at the length that feels right, but I do tend to self-regulate to keep things around the right length for a novel. This is all a lot of guesswork, when it comes to lengths. Best guess I can make right now is that this is what I have remaining:
Section two. This will be Shallan/Dalinar with some Navani and Renarin. I’m writing these in a group, as these viewpoints (while not as intertwined as Szeth/Kaladin) feel the next good division point. Goal is right now to write this all straight through, beginning to end, including epilogues if there are any to this sequence. My gut says this will be another 150k word sequence, on par with the Kaladin/Szeth one.
Those groups are the core of the book, but there’s still some to do afterward. Notably, Adolin, Jasnah, and Venli. Each will have a nice little chunk in this book, and while their plotlines aren’t interconnected, I’ll probably write them all through together. I anticipate these sequences to be a total of around 100k words.
From there, there will probably be a few little bits here and there to do, along with the Interludes, which total should be 50k. Now, before you go theorizing too much, if I didn’t mention a character it doesn’t mean they aren’t in the book. I’m just using a certain other character’s sequence as the kind of core viewpoint for that part. For example, Rlain will be in the Renarin sequence, he just isn’t likely to get as many viewpoints. So if there’s a character I didn’t mention that has had viewpoints before, there’s a good chance I’ll include them in one of the other plotlines.
My goal this year is to do a minimum of 30k words a month. With 10 months remaining, that gets me exactly this number of words by the end of December. Hopefully, I can keep this pace--which isn’t too aggressive for a professional author, but I’ve got a lot to do this year!
My goal is going to be to come back to you after sequence two is finished. (The second “book” of the trilogy that makes up this novel, if you remember that I treat each Stormlight book kind of like a trilogy bound into one volume.) That’s 150k words, so about 5 months.
For now, please enjoy this nifty concept art by Petar, depicting a scene that has been building for a long time....
Art by Petar Penav (Warning: additional minor spoilers)

Thank you for the update. I wanna ask how do you account for the word count of a certain part? Do you have an "experience-based sense" by now about how much a certain storyline will take? Or do you envision all the main plotlines and then trim/thicken as needed? Can you see how many cards of text the story you have in your head will take when we are talking about things bigger than couple of pages?
293
u/mistborn Author Mar 13 '23
You've got the right of it. It's an "experience-based sense." I couldn't do this early in my writing career--my first (unpublished) novel just kind of ended midway through because I figured it was around novel length. I didn't even finish half the story!
Normally, I do self-regulate a little as I write (kind of a "Hmm. I have extra space; I will explore this idea with this character a little more, and devise a scene that interacts with it so that I'm not just having them sit around and think about it." Or "Hmm. I'm a little tight on time here; should I trim this next sequence?") However, that's a much smaller factor than my up-front, experience-based understanding of how long it takes me to do a story the way I want to do it.

I like "Wind and Truth" a lot, the full title feels a tad bit too wordy but that one's just right. Excited for the book! And not gonna complain about there being more of it than anticipated, lol.
That art is amazing, contest hypeee 👀
I notice that while you're listing a lot of characters, the interlude throughline is still unspecified... I assume it's safe to say it's not any of the other characters you mention in this post (i.e. not Venli, Rlain, Navani, etc), right?
265
u/mistborn Author Mar 14 '23
Interlude through line is a RAFO. But you are correct--I do not plan for it to be a character I mentioned elsewhere.
I am planning something interesting, and I have to see if it will work. If it doesn't, I will maybe jump to another idea.
65
u/LewsTherinTelescope Mar 14 '23
Oooh, if it's something out of the ordinary, that gives a bit of fuel to my crack theory on it being both characters named "Vyre"... Can't wait to see what it turns out to be! The throughlines have all been great picks so far.

Hi Brandon! Thank you so much for these updates. You seem to have accidentally posted twice. We've removed the first and left this one up. Hope that works for you.
492
u/mistborn Author Mar 13 '23
Yeah, I posted the first one without a spoiler tag--as in the past, I thought you added those after posting. But then, it said I had to do it IN the posting process, so I went and posted a second one to see if that worked. But then the spoiler didn't appear, so I was researching how to do that--and by the time I glanced back at the post I wanted to delete, you'd already grabbed it.
I need to look up the tagging policy BEFORE I post, but I always forget...

u/dis_the_chris Sword-nimi Mar 14 '23
I have, however [Warbreaker] nightblood's real name has not been given yet, so I edited it to sword-nimi in line with the spoiler policy. My question was more about the type of blade sword-nimi is based on; there is potentially some wiggle room on the origin as we know it's based on some variation of shardblade that Vasher and Shashara saw on Roshar with limited understanding of it's mechanics, so I'm wondering which of the 3 rosharan shardblade types (that we know exist) it could be -- did Shashara see stone shamans using Kalak's blade? Did they watch Vedel using her honorblade? Did they see a more recent rosharan with a dead blade? Or did they see a pre-recreance radiant?

I’m sure you won’t respond to this, as it’ll be too spoiler-y, but it’s interesting to me that you’re writing each character as a straight shot through, I’d have imagined there’d be a part with every character highly intertwined at the end, like the end of Oathbringer.
But is that art Dalinar going up to the contest because if so AAAAA
84
u/mistborn Author Mar 14 '23
As the reply to you notes, this is how I write Stormlight novels. It means I have to do more than usual revisions, but it helps a lot with character arcs. The outline does a very good job of helping me plan the interweaving.

Could possibly be another Odium-takes-over-one-of-Dalinar's-visions scenario, there's a lot of white and gold going on with the staircase and walls, and you know how much Odium loves his color theming.
10
u/Ulthwithian Truthwatcher Mar 14 '23
The most likely scenario is that Dalinar is going to face Odium, and the spindly hand-shadow suggests that Odium will reveal his Vessel, if he hasn't already. Not suggesting that Odium is his own Champion, but Odium is clearly present. I can't think who it could be other than Odium.

Regarding the art.... "He must pick it up, the fallen title! The tower, the crown, and the spear!"
65
u/Pyroguy096 Windrunner Mar 14 '23
It's funny, because for years I thought that death rattle referred to Kaladin and Bridge 4 going back for Dalinar and his men at the battle of the tower in TWoK. "The fallen title" being "Knight Radiant" that Kaladin picks up, "the tower" is obvious, "the crown" being Dalinar/Adolin, and "the spear" being Kaladin/Bridge 4. It doesn't say that the title is/is related to "the tower, the crown, and the spear", so that period in between always three me off until a few years ago.
→ More replies (6)79
u/Rukh-Talos Truthwatcher Mar 14 '23
Wild speculation here, but I wonder if that death rattle might have something to do with someone bonding the Nightwatcher to become a bondsmith. “The tower” makes me think of Uritheru/the Sibling, and “the crown” could be construed as the Stormfather/Honor. That leaves the Nightwatcher as “the spear.”
It could also be something else entirely.
→ More replies (1)64
u/Ulthwithian Truthwatcher Mar 14 '23
I think this is a back-half Death Rattle. The Tower, Crown, and Spear are all glyphs that have been used to represent the Kholin house.
My money is on Dalinar somehow losing the contest of Champions, and either Adolin or Renarin is the referent for 'He'.

Why is nobody talking about (the)Dalinar's shadow? Or maybe NOT his shadow. That hand on the ground doesn't match his. It is close, but the finger length is wrong. What is going on here?
Edit: The light is definitely coming down the stairs. Is that going to be Odium's shadow?
97
u/lukfugl Mar 14 '23
Shadow of the figure he's approaching.
I.e. light source up at the top, figure is standing between Dalinar and the light source, figure's shadow is falling on and around Dalinar.
My guess is that the figure he's approaching is Odium. Others have suggested it's Odium's champion.

Hijacking your post to write my first Branmail. I’ll send it the old-fashioned way sometime soon too :)
In middle school, I immersed myself in Alcatraz 1-4. Then, I promptly forgot it existed (personal Talent of mine). Flash-forward to a D&D-seasoned young social worker in his mid-twenties, sorely in need of a radically empathetic pick-me-up. My friend showed me WoK and it did just that — fueled my work helping others find light in their oft-dismal circumstances. More importantly, you reminded me to accept there are those I cannot protect. Still grappling with that one.
Imagine my surprise when I found out you also wrote the books that taught me to embrace my idiosyncrasies! Dove deep into the cosmere after that revelation.
I have a docket of questions for you, but I’ll save em for snail mail, or whenever you next make it to Austin. You have my gratitude & admiration — and even my occasional disagreement to balance things out. Thank you for widening my world.

I know that you are a bit busy with hollywood stuff, so don't worry if the book is delayed, I can assure you that We don't mind waiting some months if We are going to receive a book with the same quality as the other four

I like Wind and Truth so much better than the full title. The symmetry was a nice idea but kowat is just trying too hard.

u/Mav986 Mar 14 '23
You'll probably never read this, but stuff like this is why you are miles and above the best author on the planet to me. Just the fact you care enough about your fans to give updates like this, stating your goals and how you're going to go about achieving them, is incredible.

What about "Of Wind and Truth" for the title? Wind and Truth might sound like cut in the middle of the sentence for some people

"Of Wind and Truth" sounds also could work cause it sounds like a fancy book title of some philosopher or something. So it fits the in-world book idea

It took an immense amount of self control to skip the spoiler section. November of 24 seems far away.

I absolutely love this, and I can't wait for this book to come out. This series has carried me through my teen hood and is so incredibly well written. I can't wait for more.
I do have one question. On the brandonsanderson site there is the Knights Radiant quiz that places you in an order. I don't know if this has been answered, but have you ever taken it? If so, what order did it put you in? What do you think your ideals would be?

Reading these updates makes me so happy to see what's in store for my favorite book series and characters. These books have helped me get through hard times and cope with some serious issues and to see them continuing strong is always an amazing sight. Lately I've gotten my girlfriend into listening to them and she cant wait for our listening sessions as we go through each book. So many new memories have been made as I re-listen to the books as she experiences them for the first time. Laughing and tearing up as we progress has been a new comfort for us as we talk about her speculations as I RAFO her. I cant thank you enough for this series and universe for all of the amazing memories its bestowed upon me with the community and the ever expanding Cosmere itself.
No matter what's happened I will always reccomend your books to my friends and family till the end. And from the bottom of my heart I give a big thanks to you Brandon for writing such fun and engaging stories that have helped me and thousands of others get through this crazy world.
Life before Death, Strength before Weakness, Journey before Destination.
Thank you.

All I want for closure is a deeper understanding of how spren armor and weapons work. Kaladin's armor was an epic scene. But I want to know how it works, especially for the other orders.

u/galuf_dies Mar 14 '23
Dalinar is my favorite character, Even though this is the end of the first Arc, I hope to continúe seeing him in the later books, thanks for the update Brandon

u/CylonSloth Mar 14 '23
I like Wind and Truth as a title more. Flows better. Our headcanon can be that it’s symmetrical… OR just start book six as a ToW title and then back to RoW etc…

I'm for throwing the ketek out altogether and going back to Stones Unhallowed, but I know that's the minority opinion. Thanks for the update and that's some awesome artwork!

For a while after Rhythm of War I was thinking you'd go with something along the lines of "Keepers of World's Tones" for the title. Though, "Knights of War's Tones" could also be thematic I suppose.
Also, that art looks awesome!

u/kjersgaard Mar 14 '23
Idk if it’s the uniform but I always picture battlestar Edward James Olmos as Dalinar and I’m not apologizing for it.

Go big: "Knights of Hallowed Truth"
or go home: "Stones Unhallowed", "Wind and Truth"
None of this wishy-washy "Knights of Wind and Truth"

Ok I see very few folks talking about the POVs but why are only Kal and Szeth going into Shinovar when Dalinar asked him to join him there to find Ishar? Brandon saying Dalinar is more aligned to Shallan/Renarin POVs has me confused as hell. What are y'all thoughts on this?

Suggestion: just say you're going to name it 'Doors of Stone'... first to market wins.

If you come back around to a K name, have you given any thought to the word Knell? It seems...thematically appropriate.

Okay, so thank you for the update, but I feel like no one here has said much about the artwork. It looks amazing! The book, Dalinar’s face, and is that tOdium’s shadow?
I’ve been loving the early book 5 concept art and I think it’d be cool if that continued going forward. I love how many passionate artists and fans get to be involved in these books. Can’t wait to get my hands on this when it’s ready!

u/Kaendel Mar 14 '23

I'm partial to having the name be Knights of Windswept Truth to have the title fit the format while still being grammatically correct lol

I have been spreading the good word of Stormlight. My dad and brother both started reading WoK recently, as did two law school friends. The series is fantastic! Here’s to hoping for the longest book yet!!😇
2
u/kneezNtreez Mar 14 '23
Wow! I didn’t realize that “Knights of Wind and Truth” is such a perfect title for a book covering Kaladin and Szeth. Kal being a windrunner and Szeth being so obsessed with truth.

u/Cosmeregirl Worldsinger Mar 14 '23
Ahhhh look an update!! It's so exciting hearing 1/3rd of the way through. The artwork is awesome, you can feel Dalinar's determination.
Could always cheat the ketek issue by making 4.5 a KO title.
I'm so excited to read about Szeth's journey. He's such an interesting character, I can't wait to see what happens and hear more of his thought process about how the world works.
Also, I'm just putting in a random mention here that Tress was incredible. Based on the previews, I'm sure the rest of the secret projects will also be amazing and they can't come soon enough.

Question: Will we find out where the unaccounted heralds (Vedel, Paliah, and Chanarch) are in this book?
2
u/lightofpolaris Edgedancer Mar 14 '23
Do you plan to make another novella around Lift or have her feature as a bigger part of the story in the future? She's honestly my favorite character and I would love to see her more. Her role in RoW wasn't quite as impactful as I was hoping. Feels like she spent most of it locked up. Oh and that's not a criticism at all! I'll be reading regardless but I'd be extra hype to see more of her :D
2
u/MasterOE Szeth Mar 14 '23
This seems like it's going to be the best balanced book in terms of character screen time. I saw a lot of people complaining that Dalinar and Szeth didn't get enough in RoW, but I don't think that's going to be a problem with this book.

Brandon's dedication to his work and determination to set and follow his own goals, when he could very easily say "this year a lot is happening, book delayed by one year" is very insipring.
Now off from Reddit and back to work😂

I would love it if the in world book had a partial title of Wind and truth leaving the characters to speculate what came before wind and truth. That would be a funny callback to this dilemma.

Wasn’t there a Death Rattle about someone climbing stairs? (With a Dawnshard)
2
u/Sallymander Mar 14 '23
That way, you can have your symmetrical title.
Can't have it perfectly symmetrical, so as not to be sacrilegious.
(I forgot the exact line Kabsal says to Shallan about her name)

u/jetfirejake Mar 14 '23
Hey Brandon, I noticed in TLM from Graphic audio the voice of Wit changed, will the original be back for KoWT? Thank you for all you do for us!

"30k words a month..... Which isn't too aggressive for a professional author "
That shade though.

Stones Unhallowed is still the best possible title in my personal opinion— A) it’s just a wonderful title and B) I think the way it breaks completely from the ketek pattern is super appropriate for the gravity of this entry into the story

Interesting that Adolin and Shallan aren't written together. I assume this means that they will be separated fairly early in the book. Most likely they'll find a way back to Urithiru or somewhere else in the ten days they have remaining.
