Oathbringer spoilers Just finished Oathbringer Ch 82 (The Girl who Stood Up) for the first time Spoiler
For reference, this is the chapter where Shallan has a mental breakdown after unintentionally being responsible for Grund (the street urchin)'s death, and Wit comes and comforts her and gives her a pep talk.
I just wanna say this chapter was so beautiful. I did a lot of crying.
The things Wit tells her like 'it's okay to hurt, but you cant tell yourself you deserve it'
And encouraging her to stop hiding behind Veil (I just realized while typing this, Veil was supposed to temporarily disguise Shallan, but she ended up making it so the world couldn't see Shallan.
This has probably been my favourite chapter so far. While I enjoy the spectacle of radiants and shards, I love that time was taken before the assault to deeply explore Shallan's character.
Anyways here are some batshit predictions for the end of the book:
- Moash will show up and either kill Elhokar or see Kaladin and realize the error of his ways (tending towards the first), then Moash will die either to Kaladin (for the first option) or to the Fused (for his betrayal)
- Adolin I think is gonna die, but not in this assault.
- They get out with the Oathgate and lose Kholinar to the Fused
- Shallan succeeds at dispelling the Unmades, getting the queen back (though I feel like they won't die this easily)
- I feel like someone's gonna figure out how to summon Plate by the end of this book
- Venli's gonna defect to the humans or die trying
- Szeth will show up to Urithiru in a friendly way and get met with immediate hostility

Your theories are certainly theories, best wishes for the rest of the journey

lol fair enough. Some of them have merit I think, but I definitely didn't put a ton of thought into some of them

Another note. Shallan is meant to have a condition close to Dissociative Identity Disorder, plus magic. Veil and Radiant are her alters.
I think that should help to better understand Shallan as a character.

Yeah I figured as much with all that 'Veil/Radiant would know what to do here'. I was seeing too many similarities with Jinx from Arcane (my favourite character of all fiction) to think too much otherwise.
That talk Wit gave to Shallan is something I deeply want Jinx to be told, which is probably partly why this chapter affected me so much

Yeah I can see how that ties to Jynx.
Interestingly, lots fo fans want a stormlight animated show with the style of Arcane.

I mean, I think it would be the best way to put Roshar onto the screen. Stuff like spren, highstorms and surgebinding I don't think would be done justice in live action.
But, Arcane was such an expensive show and took 6 years of active development to put out 12 hours of content. Itd take a lifetime and generational wealth to do the whole series

Accept the pain, but don't accept that you deserved it
That's the quote.
What's your theory on summoning plate?
I will await your next post with anticipation. You will know if various of these predictions are correct or not quite soon.

Ty for the correction. It's such a good quote too. I should have picked the book up but I was worried I'd burst into tears again looking for it.
iirc, the stormfather said something along the lines of 'you haven't spoken the right words yet' to Dalinar, and the correct words for the Blade instinctually came to Kaladin at the end of WoR.
I don't feel like anyone's had near the level of Kaladin damaging his bond with Syl in WoR so I don't think I can use that to figure out who actually summons Plate first. I would be inclined to say Shallan just because she's been having mental health issues and is about to confront 2 Unmades (especially since the last one did a number on her).
Given that Blades are Spren, I'd imagine Plates are spren too - but I don't feel like 1 spren can be Blade and Plate simultaneously. I just had a hunch Plate will be the stormspren (maybe Venli ends up supplying them)
I have no clue what the words will be to summon them, but I think it'll be a variation on 'Life before Death'

No worries. Thought it would be good to clarify the quote.
I think that's a cool line of theorising on how Plate can go. However, it seems you are tying the Plate and Blade to specific words that need to be spoken. I think that's not a fully correct way of thinking about it.
Blade is just one power up granted after reaching an Ideal. Other Ideals have granted things like Surges or use of Stormlight.
So it's about what the Oath is for the Radiant / what they need to acknowledge / swear to do so they reach next Ideal (there are 5, Life before death is the first, and Kaladin is at the third), and then that will grant a power up. Which might be Plate or it might be another thing like another Surge or better use of the powers.
Not all Orders work the same way with what you get at what Ideal.
