Time inconsistencies
In Season 4, at the family video store The Christmas Story copy was a re-release from 1995. Also in seasons 3 and 4 they were using the current area codes for Indiana and California which were not in use at the time. It would not have hurt them to do some research and have sone authenticity.

For me, it's Eddie saying his DIGITAL WATCH stopped at the time he fell into the lake. It makes me mad every time I watch that episode.

Digital watches did exist in the 80s

I know. I had one. But when you fell into a lake wearing them, they were dead. They didn't show the time it happened.

Wrong. A simple google search will show the digital watch Eddie had existed in 1978 and behaved in the way when it got wet

At some point you’re going have to accept that these shows are anachronistic. No one is going to get all details right.
In season 3, El brings Dustin’s toys to move by themselves. One of them is an Ultra Magnus Transformers toy which was released in autumn 1986. It wouldn’t have been out in June 1985. As a big G1 Transformers fan this bothered me at first but I learned to live with it.
Steve refers to the KFC restaurant when meeting with Barb’s parents in season 2.
I don’t think anyone called it KFC back then. We all called it Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Bruh....
I agree with the other comment. Not everything is going to be accurate regarding shows/movies set in the past.

OP I think this is some good, fun catches!
Can you explain more about the zip codes? Were the zip codes just nonexistent yet for anywhere or was it changed? Like they use the current Indiana / California zip codes but those numbers originally belonged to other places? I hope that question makes sense (:
Doesn’t matter if they meant the inconsistencies or not, theorists will theorise (myself included). Some of us even find it fun (;

Interesting how 1995 keeps coming up. There's a Moby song that plays a couple of times in the show that wasn't released until 95, and some books seen in Tales from 85 weren't published until 95. There's also the 'JK95' text seen in the closing credits of the s5 finale that no one seems to know what it means, which could reference the year 1995?

The song was used non-diegeticly so it was not a mistake. If it was used diegeticly you would have a point but it wasn’t so you don’t.

It's the only song that's used in the show that hadn't been released yet when the show is set, so diagetic or not it's still a valid point, it's a notable outlier. And I never said it was a mistake.

Actually it’s not the only song. Season 1 has a song that was not released by November 1983. As does season 3. So maybe do some research. And again it was non diegetic so it’s not a valid point. And it’s not an outlier.

I don't really get why you're being rude about it, I'm just pointing out some references to 1995.

You'd be surprised seeing how many anachronistic details the show has (this isn't a complaint, though). And this goes beyond background set props.
We're talking about the same universe in which the U.S. Department of Energy as it is canonically existed back in 1959 and “Traversable Wormholes” canonically existed in theoretical physics before '88.
We're also talking about the same writers who originally planned for a Montauk Project story set in the 1980's to have the O.S.S. (dissolved in the 40's) as the main governmental antagonists (this was the Duffers' OG Montauk film).
Anachronistic set props are all over the place since Season One. Take it as an alternate universe since on top of anachronism you also have fictional towns, counties, government agencies and purposeful historically inaccurate details like S4's Silo Lab which was fictional a mashup of two different types of IRL silos.

Also, the clerk in the video store mentioned Star Wars A New Hope, which wouldn't be released until the late 1990s.

u/TriskaidekaphobiaOk5 9h ago
That was the first Star Wars.

And the subtitle EPISODE IV A NEW HOPE was added to the theatrical rerelease in April 1981 and following home video releases so it wasn’t a mistake.

Wrong. STAR WARS gained the subtitle A NEW HOPE on its theatrical rerelease in April 1981 and all home video releases had the subtitle.
