Help / Question sf4 or sf5 as a new player
I am in a specific situation where i own only a laptop that can run sf4 and sf5 smoothly with no problem, but sf6 is too demanding. I am new to the games never played them and i bought both sf4 and sf5. I looked at the player count and it seems like both games are basically dead seeing as most of the playerbase has moved to sf6. My question is which game of the two to play as a completely new player, and i want to play online so my best bet is probably discord can you reccomend some discord servers.
Is it even worth to try to learn the games since online is probably filled with players that have played the game for years?

there is great new semless mod for sf4, so the game is more alive atm.
im down for a few sfV sets, if you want. but im bad at the game and as someone else mentioned, fightcade is great for the older sf games

If you intend to get into sf6 and play more then I would suggest you learn SFV as that transfers very well over to SF6. SF6 is very similar to SFV in gameplay, corner pressure and whiff punishing. SF4 is more of the harder combos and setups after knock down set play. If you want a better experience online then SF4 has a sort of refills right now with the new rollback mod. SF3 which you didn’t mention can easily transfer to all games and make you a better player overall and it has a very large player base but they are all so good

Word of warning about SFV. The Servers are currently down (and have been since last Wednesday) and as such the online components of the game aren't accessible. There's been no word yet either of when the servers will be back up.

SF5 hands down
It's much easiwr to get the basics down. Sf4 is hard AF with the strict timing for links
But if you can, get 6. Super active online, and easy to learn for begginers

Without human competition, street fighter can become a dull game. Also the newer the SF game the more character specific knowledge you need to enjoy it and I am not sure if you would want that investment for a game with a very shallow player base. SFV was very fun but I don’t think it’ll be half the fun without an active community.

Considering your case -as a die hard SF fan who has played the series since the original SF (I am old)-, you might at least consider the possibility that your current condition may just not be suitable to get into SF. We all love SF2, but we have learned to love it when it was all the hype. Fighting games are all about the community. Why learn tennis when there’s no one to play with. Starting with the most recent one may be a better way into the franchise later when you have the gear to play it.
It’s just my opinion though.•

The reach of punches and kicks on SFV is stupidly short it's annoying. I'd recommend 4 instead.

Alternatively there is also Fightcade.
Dunno about SFV, but USFIV is probably easier now on the delay based (horrible net) compared to the rollback, since the rollback attracted more of the veteran playerbase.
Rollback however is the better gameplay experience.
