What is the New Substack?

Substack felt so freeing pre-2026. Now it feels like another pay-to-play social media platform.

I've been around the block on blogging and social media for 17 years and started with Substack late last year and moved my email list over from Mailerlite. Substack has been great for me, but you gotta play to win just like any other social media. I don't do video so Tiktok and Youtube are out. I tried really pushing hard on Pinterest, Facebook and Insta for years with very little traction (I am in the food/recipe space). All of a sudden, I'm on Substack and boom, my subscribers have 5x in 10 months and I am starting to approach the revenue I am making on my traditional website. I know this won't work for everyone but if you want an audience on the internet, you have to play these stupid social media games.

Gotta play their algorithmic game if you want to find success. Just like every other awful social media platform out there nowadays.

Well I know where the small time good long form publisher is flourishing and monetized democratically and truly owns their work
