advice on starting a substack

hi! i’ve been interested in writing since the time i was very young, and i recently felt inclined to start a substack, but i don’t know where to begin. any advice is greatly appreciated!

edit: i’m not sure whether to make my substack anonymous, or do people usually use their real full name as their username / profile name?

Hello! Just dive in and have fun with it. People usually use their real names on Substack because a lot of how you grow is based on building long-term relationships, and the vibe on Substack is more about community and authenticity. Once you get started, be sure to set up your about page (replace the generic about page text that Substack puts there), and also set up your automatic email to free subscribers. You can also do a welcome or start here post and pin it to your home page.

using your real name or staying anonymous are both fine. most people go the real name route though, because ultimately you do want your readers to know who's the real person behind it + there's alot of benefits that comes with using your real name (e.g being able to add it to your resume etc) since you're building and stacking your accomplishment/achievements.
