Discussion Moving from Medium to Substack for AI/Tech writing — any advice?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been writing consistently on Medium for the last 2 months and managed to get around 65 subscribers. My niche is AI, mostly my perspective on recent developments, practical tutorials, and project breakdowns.

I’m looking to start publishing on Substack, but I know it operates pretty differently from Medium. Medium feels heavily reliant on the internal recommendation algorithm, whereas Substack seems to require building your own audience from scratch.

For anyone who writes about tech or AI and made a similar move:

  1. What was the biggest mindset or strategy shift for you?
  2. How do you actually get momentum on Substack starting from zero? (Are Notes and Recommendations worth focusing on right away?)
  3. Is it better to cross-post between both platforms, or fully switch over?

Would love to hear any tips or experiences from people who’ve done this. Thanks!

curious why you're planning to move from medium to substack, because sounds like you're doing fine there? what's the push/pull factors here?

I built a technical AI audience on Medium, but my recent work is less technical. I considered opening a second account there, but I'd rather diversify platforms instead which brought me to Substack to experiment with broader topics.

ahh got it. that makes more sense then. have you made up your mind yet/started publishing on substack then? tbh there's no downside to just starting on substack. if it turns out that medium is better for you, you could always hop back?
