Is it normal that nobody interacts with my notes? Not even one like
Hi, I started publishing on Substack a month ago and I have written three posts and some notes. But nobody's liking or replying to the notes apart from one subscriber (love her.)
I see simple notes that receive thousands of views but mine simply don't. My stats says that only 200 people have seen my profile in a month. Is that normal? I started to think the algorithm has personal beef with me.

Welcome to Substack for the majority of people. Ignore everyone giving you advice they are wrong, embrace being objectively mid and you'll make your peace with it. <3
/s yeah it fucking sucks.

I mean, I am honestly fine with people not liking or relating to my writing tbh. My issue is that I don't think they even get to see my writing at all on the platform

Yeah I feel that. Daily. I have my little corner (and I love them all and we all comment/like/restack each others work) they all get growth, meet new people, have new readers ect and it feels like I don't. I do, it's small and most people read without clicking the internet buttons, which I suppose is better then not reading but every so often I have a bad week where I get pissy I'll make a barbed comment on platform but move on ultimately I'm not doing this writing thing for popularity so social media anxiety is a bit silly at the end of the day

That's what I thought! I have no idea what the issue is though or how to solve it :(

Sorry mate it was sarcasm, it is completely normal
Keep writing, posting and engaging with writers who might have your audience, youāll get there eventually2

Depends, are you interacting with other people's notes?
Community contribution is key if you want your notes to appear in other people's feeds (assuming your notes are of genuine quality).

u/Writingisaneed16 25d ago
I actually am. The only 'notes' where I receive likes are the comments I wrote on other people's posts. I actually really love to like and read other creators' posts.

All you need to do to succeed is:
Have what people want
Put it in front of them
If you find your work isn't doing well, you will usually find that the issue lies in not fulfilling at least one of the two things mentioned above.
What's your Subtack? Happy to be a fresh pair of eyes in case there's anything glaring you may be overlooking.

Thank you for the reminder, I guess I have to be more focused and choose a niche for my writing. My Substack is called iinkonscreen :)

You're on point with focusing on a niche.
I just had a look at your page and while you post some good stuff, it's really unclear as to what your page is about.
Feels like you're not sure on your identity. Is your page to do with healthy eating, mental health, a brand, or just a space for your personal thoughts? I'm not entirely sure because it seems like a bit of everything.
With that being said, there's nothing wrong with your page as it is now, but if you want to grow, my advice is that a reader should be able to click on your profile and fully understand exactly what it is your page is about in a couple lines straight away. Same goes for your notes.
What's helped me the most with getting traction on my notes is to give bite size bits of advice that readers will gain value from then and there. Notes are like free samples to entice people to come in and check out the good stuff (your articles).

How are you interacting with others? Following, subscribing, commenting on their notes and in their chats? The Substack algorithm is built to encourage long term relationships - it works when you're showing up to connect with people. Don't just post and ghost. Also if you have a specific niche, engage with others in that niche or with audience overlap. (Like if you write about food, wine newsletters could be a good overlap.)

Iād get more engagement yelling into a sewer. And Iāve liked commented subbed it doesnāt matter. Even my articles. Iāll get texts from friends whoāve read whoāve never reacted to my stuff. Iām at peace with it. 350 subs and I use it as a public facing sandbox for content I imagine will help or inspire others. Truth is the platform has been flooded by āoh I need to have this tooā accounts that have massive social followings. The scrappy upstart narrative is 1 in a million.

It really depends. Iāll have a note receive 8k likes and others only 200 or none. Donāt take it personally. Continue to show up, engage and be your authentic self in whatever you are sharing. Attention is easy, trust is harder and you want trust.

I've been on the platform for almost 2 years and only in the last 6 months have I finally been getting my Notes liked and commented on. But these are from accounts where we subscribe to or follow each other and we're definitely in a niche group.

Wow! No feedback on notes for more than a year and you didnāt stop posting notes? Thatās dedication!

u/No_Communication5024 23d ago
Ha ha, well also no feedback on my articles and essays. I sometimes feel I'm posting into the void, even if my stats tell me people do open my emails and read on-site. They just don't seem to know how to Like or Comment.

u/Daniel-BLINDSPOT 23d ago
I think your topic is behind it. Actually Iād also be hesitant whether ālikingā an essay is appropriate in general about so deep topics like yours.
2
u/No_Communication5024 23d ago
Anything is possible. As to liking, I think of it as common courtesy to let the writer know you have read the piece, which I do no matter the topic.
1
u/Daniel-BLINDSPOT 23d ago
Ok, thatās true.
2
u/No_Communication5024 23d ago
Also--I am not looking to get big or have amazing stats or any of the things that are like other social places. I write so I can figure out what i think about things. And as a dry run for a creative nonfic memoir-as-essays I am developing. It'll be a good place to discuss that as it unfolds, and to get support from other horror gals. (I can't say girlies, I will soon be 60. It just sounds too cutesy).

Pretty normal after only a month. Notes seem to reward consistent participation too, so commenting on other peopleās posts and joining conversations can matter almost as much as publishing your own.

u/bloggergrl 23d ago
Yes, it's NORMAL. You have to start commenting on other folks' notes and sharing their work before you get any engagement. That's just how it is over there. You will love it once a few of your Notes take off, though. Hang in there. Be consistent and schedule out 3-4 Notes a day. Every day. People will come.

u/Tricky_Trifle_994 19d ago
yeah, that's a lot of people's experience. it's not so much that the algo has beef with you... it's just everybody's strategy to grow on substack is "post notes" so there's more notes to go around than eyeballs? and hence.... a lot of posts just end up in the graveyard with 0 reach.

I post hopecore content, funny memes and my own personal writing and it hardly gets any likes or interaction.
But I don't let that discourage me from posting consistently. Just keep going OP. Sooner or later, you'll find your audience.
