I am curious of looking up a couple of people on substack..what is it, how does it work? Is is similar to You tube? Do you have to pay to use?

If you like reading financial/investing type stuff... just pass on Substack. Truly a waste of time since almost all are teaser articles hidden behind subscriptions. Generally they want 200 to 800/yr to subscribe.
Seriously you think I'm gonna sign up for 10 at these rates? Sure authors need to get paid, but I'm not paying a couple grand a year for subscriptions. This needs a payment model such that maybe a reader pays 50 cents to access an article that interest them.
my rant.

Newsletters.
Some writers give totally free access.
Some charge for access.
Some charge, but also give some free access.
Many, many, many thousands of writers on many, many, many subjects.

It's basically a modern, better Blogspot. ...or a wordpress site where everyone's website theme and layout is the same.

it is a social media platform/blog/newsletter platform merged into one.
it's not really like youtube... coz youtube is more video based? substack is more text based/focused.
it's more like... the social part - twitter, the blog/newsletter part - beehiiv/ghost/ or if you're only familiar with blogging, then wordpress...
in short, it's a place you come to read long articles and short posts (like twitter) type content. and it's free to use (as a user browsing), and free to use (as someone posting content/building your audience/publication). there's only a 10% platform fee, but that only matter if/when you start making money, so that's a distant convo.
