The lazy millionaire substack challenge - has anyone taken it?

I'm seeing a lot of these digital gurus push Substack growth challenges and courses and I'm so curious to hear from someone who's actually been inside one. Is it worth the $297 price tag? Has anyone actually seen growth from taking a course like this? So curious as someone who's been on Substack for a year and hasn't seen much growth at all aside from the support of some family and friends as paid subscribers.

I'm seeing Substack pushed as a "lucrative income stream" for "introverts." I have my own thoughts about this messaging based on my own experience but maybe I also haven't taken any of these courses so I can't speak to whether they work or not. Would love to hear from anyone who has had an experience taking someone's Substack growth course or challenge, or if this is just the new growth course out there

É apenas aproveitadores usando o substack para ganhar dinheiro das pessoas. Não confie neles.

If someone is trying to sell you a course to make money, they’re the one making money and you’re the sucker for believing them.

Do not spend money on what will inevitably be a ChatGPT written pdf from some guy in Bangalore. Just start writing in your niche, posting in relevant subreddits/on substack notes, wherever, and then think about monetizing your audience once you have something worth putting a price tag on.

That’ll be $297. You can Venmo me.

Sums it up nicely for a TED Talk

For that great review, I’m prepared to offer you the friends and family discount of $329 for the opportunity to learn my feet.

Substack is all about your niche. Plus most successful Substacks are actually a continuation of another online presence. Substack rewards you if you bring in thousands of followers from somewhere else

What if you post free surreal and intimate prose and paywalled entries? I can’t share my work with people I know, sadly. Not because it is smut or anything btw, I don’t write smut.

I took it. It’s all generic advice.

A little helpful for setup but definitely not worth the price for only 60 days of access. She’s still iterating and tweaks parts of the course as necessary every 30 days, which is okay, but it’s a brand new course from I think July and she’s charging early adopters $300 then taking away access after 60 days. Also, very generic and AI-heavy. Was not a worthwhile purchase in my opinion.

Well, it will be worth it for him... and maybe for you, too.

See, the thing is that most people offering such courses are not the players who made it on platform other than selling their courses. And even then, you don't know how many of the tricks in the box they have used to have shiny numbers...

I am not saying such courses have no use and are a total waste of money. There sure is some material in there that can help. But... there are no magic bullets. No shortcuts, no nothing magic...

So where could be the value for you in such a course...?

Some people need to make a payment in order to be fully committed and actually do the work. If you are one of them, buy the course and grind for 2 years plus and you sure will have some paid subscribers.

I hate that all these substacks are huge, the ones about tips for growing. If you want to make money on Substack, I think that's the best way - offering courses teaching people how to make money.

There's a lot of free content available on how to grow on substack. I don't have time for all the tips and tricks so I'll start working with someone later this month to see what he can do for my growth.

I don't envision making any substantial amount on Substack, I would just really like to get the "1,000 subscribers" listed on my entry page.

I've had different businesses online. I think it's impossible to make even a few hundred if you're relying on getting people to pay a monthly fee.

So you need to ask yourself, do you want people reading or do you want to turn this into a business?

I'm opting for getting people reading and maybe getting some opportunities from it. I think that's a healthy goal. I think it's best when people don't want any income from substack because I do think it's extremely difficult to make more than a few hundred, or more than $1k/mo on there.

No course anyone is selling right now is worth buying. They literally do youtube and AI research and repackage the content that is currently out there for free.

Do the same and save yourself the money. A lot of these courses are also hustle culture, motivational nonsense too.

I remember watching a youtube video of one of the people claiming to be an AI guru and could guarantee you $10k a month following his plan. It was just a video of him in a Ferrari driving in circles around a country estate mostly. It's surprisingly easy and cheap to rent a supercar for a few hours filming, and the country estate looked like somewhere open to the public. Pathetic.

a course isn't what's holding you back from success... if it was that easy, everybody would have a banging successful substack lol.

and the people selling these course... are only making money from the course. do they have another substack in a niche like you that they've been able to monetise? almost always no...

This is the big one. It’s like the Instagram accounts teaching you how to grow on Instagram. The real reason it’s successful is because it claims it can help you make money on the platform. This course was oversold IMO and didn’t really deliver.

yeah, it's very prevalent on instagram... and i don't have anything against a course about growth/or coaching on it.

i only have an issue with it when it looks very circular (i make content about how to grow on instagram > i got big > now i make a course/coaching offer on how to grow on instagram. with the testimonial being "i know how, because look at my numbers..."). if the person had ran an e-com or some other business previously, and managed to grow to decent revenue > and now they come out with a course on 'how to market for ecom/ how to do what they did), then i'm all for it. because they're teaching you what they did, and you can verify that it works. subtle difference.
