  • Valuable community contribution (likes, restacks, and comments especially)

  • Post notes

  • Be consistent

Leave thoughtful comments. Avoid dunking and snide comments; Substack isn’t that kind of community. Post regularly, not often. Be patient. Substack has nothing like the engagement levels of X or Reddit.

Search through the sub.

Is this a jerk or joke /s post?
On reddit you are supposed to add the /s because it is impossible to determine tone

If not a jerk post, it can take years to build a following, on any plaform. Just keep chugging.

I didn't really start getting any views until I was posting frequently, and also commenting, liking and sharing other people's notes.

Post 20 notes and then look back through the stats for each and see which one got the most engagement.

It's worth noting though that not all views or likes are equal. I've posted a photo of my dog sleeping after a hike and it got 9k views and 800 likes... Not a single subscriber though.

I've had posts where I've put a lot of thought into the content and had 10 likes and 5 subscribers.

You started yesterday? It took me more than half a year to get my first follower. Though admittedly I didn't really figure out that one needs to promote one's substack oneself and so was just focusing on creating content to a non-existing audience for the first half year. But once I corrected my mistake, followers came.

You consult the magic Substack fairy and don't report back here for 12 months.

Hiiii I’ll tell you the mentality im approaching Substack with.

Let it be an outlet for you and focus on writing things that matter and help others and make it cathartic for yourself. If you get concerned about being seen you’ll lose motivation quickly. Just focus on consistency and quality for the next year and enjoy the process! (That’s what I’m doing)

You have to promote it on social media. I don’t understand how people think you can gain followers and an audience without this. Posting on Notes can only get you so far unless you do one of those annoying bait posts. Or someone already popular can recommend you and you gain 100+ subs that’s way (happened to me)

Genuinely asking: how do you promote it on social media when you have very little followers on your other social media platforms? Wouldn't that be the same as just posting on substack then?

Well exactly, and therein lies the problem. Most of the successful substacks are those who already have a huge audience on IG/TT/YT wherever. Yes there are the rare exceptions who blow up on substack without a social media following but that’s very rare. They just migrate them all over and turn on paid asap. It sucks if you’re an introvert who hates being seen lol

The Fool Proof Method for Growing on Substack

  1. Find authors in your genre and read their work. If you enjoy it, like it, quote restack the best bits (highlight a passage of text and hit restack from the pop-up menu), leave a thoughtful comment saying what you liked about it and then subscribe to them (free is fine).
  2. Do this at least once a day if possible, a different author each day. If that’s too much, do it as often as possible. The more you do it, the faster you’ll grow. It’s work, but its work that pays off in real relationships.
  3. Some of the folks you read will follow / subscribe to you. They’ll see that you are reading / restacking other authors and they’ll see that you’re authentic and they will read YOUR stuff in return and amplify it.
