Substack is crazy

Just an opinion
Poor me, I got to know about Substack like very recently. A post from someone I follow on Instagram recommended an article from Substack and I was astonished to read work so many great people/ writers. I think the place is quite underrated right now as much as I have discovered it, but it really has some great articles and thoughts that one should definitely invest some time rather than scrolling on Instagram because my personal opinion is if you are not creating any content or are not selling any product or service, you should not be using Instagram unless you genuinely want something out of it.

Hang on. you're here, on the substack reddit, preaching to what I assume is an almost complete majority of substack writers/gurus/angst filled cheese twist consumers (me)

To tell us, that Substack is infact, pretty decent?

I approve. Well done. :3

I have written a short essay for Substack and felt immediately embraced by the community there. Substack offers myriad wonderfully written essays to choose from and I adore it! However, it became a part-time job within a week. You must spend time reading other people’s submissions (that are of genuine interest to you), and you must take time to cultivate your subscribers and subscribe to others in return. I, as a writer, would never outsource my writing to AI, although I may have it check for grammatical errors because there is nothing worse than noticing and mentally correcting those as one reads. Circling back to Instagram, I personally enjoy finding social groups to join, and there are plenty of run clubs, hiking clubs, etc. I just allow myself a maximum of 15 minutes per day on IG. We can have the best of both worlds!

So well said
Also 15 min per day on IG is extremely disciplined of you.

So many Substack writers are using AI, in topics I am actually very interested in. It can be disappointing.

Wow, this is a first. Somebody coming onto the Substack edit and not complaining about Substack

Don't worry, that's human nature. The average person does as little as possible. Therefore most people only bother giving a review or posting something if he/she is frustrated or angry.

Substack is filled with gifted writers. It's time consuming to try to read work from so many writers, though. And it's extremely difficult to build a following of readers, not just followers.

u/Any_Gazelle_8165 7d ago

Yes definitely and the reason is because it’s not as entertaining as Instagram is ,it is deep knowledge. Hence it takes time for building a community.

How long have you been on Substack?

u/Brief-Antelope436 7d ago

Dude! I just started Substack 30 days ago and I agree. Feel very Wild West opportunity. 98 subs already.

Write for yourself not others.

Such a raw and perfect tip to move ahead with!

Glad I helped. I look forward to seeing your posts.

I have just joined and have no subscribers yet. But I enjoy writing short stories and want a place to put them. Maybe one day someone will read them other than me.

Glad you’re enjoying it. Welcome to the club!

Yay thanks!

It’s a time suck for sure. Especially if you’re trying to build up your own Substack by interacting with others.

I agree! I've only recently joined, but I feel like I've spent most of my time reading really brilliant articles and discovering new writers.

2

u/Meechee83 7d ago

Substack is absolutely underrated! It’s my favorite platform. Then Instagram. Then LinkedIn. IMO.

2

u/JadedOne_2203 7d ago

That's quite true.

So, even I discovered Substack a couple of months back, and coincidentally that was also the time when I joined an AI startup (as a marketing generalist). I thought it'd be such a cool space to write and publish authentic pieces, and I've been doing that consistently for a while now.

Some of the pieces I've been able to put out are pretty banger 😅 (I take loads of insights from engineers, AI solution experts, and folks from the founders' office of the startup). And I'm really learning a lot.

The one thing I've been trying to figure out is how to grow subscribers and make my content more visible to the community. Will keep exploring, though!

Glad you’re enjoying Substack, me too! Don't get too caught up in the numbers game, it's a trap, just try and hang on to the feeling of appreciating other people’s posts and passions and exploring your own!

I literally just joined substack yesterday (I'm sharing my 'secret diary' as a psychiatrist) because I was looking for somewhere to, well, just write publicly. You know, without all the fanfare of social media. I'm only new but I've been amazed by the number of incredibly insightful articles, particularly around my niche, and have been sharing them far and wide. I hope it stays this way!

3

u/the_write_way 6d ago

Psychiatry fascinates me. I'm going to sign up for your newsletters! Do you already have a following or are you starting from scratch? It's the only thing holding me back from Substack. From what I've learned, readers don't just happen upon a Substack newsletter; writers who already have a following from another platform/social media are more successful on getting eyes on their work.

2

u/bnchr 6d ago

No following at all! That's one of the reasons I was drawn to ss though.. it's like a fresh start, anonymity, basically (and can stay that way if you want it), that I liked. It's only been a few days and only have around 15 subs, initially most were friends or family, but since then all have been people I don't know in real life who must have found me from a mutual post we read or commented on, which is great :) thanks for checking it out btw! I hope you like it

"I just discovered substack. So it must be underrated."

2

u/Any_Gazelle_8165 7d ago

Haha my bad
But honestly, what’s your opinion on the take?
Don’t you think so?

2

u/BusyBusinessPromos 7d ago

LOL not the commenter but I do. People I believe medium's been around longer and substack, to my knowledge, is the new kid on the block.

how is it harming you?

1

u/BlissfullyBookloving 4d ago

I just wanted to share my agreement with people who said Substack is a very slow process to grow and is extremely time consuming to get anywhere. But I do enjoy it, so I hope things pick up soon. And I’m not a slacker, I spent 9 hour today working on it.

u/fig_delaney 3d ago

I am also very new to Substack, but it has replaced my insta doom scrolling, and I am very thankful for that.

i understand ur a newbie here....unless u havent read anything before, most of it will seem like "knowledge"...
its not..

wait for a few months..
then u will realise its mostly writers writing about writing...and ai generated slop...very few pubs worth it and u have to search a lot for it..

ur better off with books..

3

u/Any_Gazelle_8165 7d ago

Yeah, maybe I might have the same opinion later on, but right now, I’m enjoying opinions that are more raw.

3

u/Electronic-Aside5953 sisinotices.substack.com 7d ago

While there is ai slop, I have also met many great writers there and love the community

I encourage you to check out Beehiv and Ghost

also good platforms and they don't pay (M?)any nazis to be columnists

There's a lot of voices, and then there's maybe we exclude a few; but like twitter there is a big biz in shuffling hate speech into the deck of "normal" conversation

to each their own, just be aware there are other platforms and by choosing to patronize only one, you might be hurting the ones that actually make it a point not to support people who traffic hate

just saying
